Go Australia! While the overall sport investment from the government (Austrialian Sport Commission) is impressive, the direct investment in adaptive sports is wonderful to see. Per the article, “Para sport investment doubled by an additional $54.9m over two years.” The Aussies are serious. They want to win more medals. And they clearly understand the link between basic participation and the podium. In fact, if you look at the medal counts, the countries who make strategic investments in their adaptive and Paralympic sports industries win more medals. In the Paris 2024 Paralympics: China was 1st with 94 medals. Great Britain was 2nd with 48. Team USA was 3rd with 36. Australia sees an investment opportunity as they were 9th in the Paralympic medal count with 18. China and GB both invest heavily in the Paralympic pipeline. Word is that GB has more wheelchair basketball players than we do! IMHO The US should win many more Paralympic medals than we do. However, we have massive gaps in awareness and even larger and more embarrassing gaps in participation. We have significant funding challenges across the industry. We have no centralized, sustainable, reliable funding for adaptive sport providers like Angel City Sports, that are on the ground in communities across the U.S. And worse yet, many sister orgs in California have been going out of business or struggling the last few years. The AFL - Australian Football League minute of silence gesture raised awareness, but Ginger Gorman and I have asked: what can sport can do to change the culture of violence and sexism? The 'easy' fix is to get their pens out and create gender equality across the board: in leadership, medals, coaching, pay parity, broadcasting, sponsorship and support! In the meantime, sport orgs and media must hold abusive and sexist men to account. It is possible to be 2 things: a great player AND a bad human. Sport is not more important than the women they abuse. The research tells us that 3 out of 4 men are gender equality supporters, but very few (17%) prioritise taking any action. Men in sport can start taking action by actively dis-honouring and sanctioning the men who abuse women. 1. Dis-honour the Honoured The AFL demanded that convicted abuser, Wayne Carey, be denied his NSW Hall of Fame ‘Legend’ status. The next step is to see Carey struck off his club and AFL honour rolls. The same treatment applies to other convicted abusers - at community club and elite levels. Let's explicitly call abuse out with a * next to their names – “Dis-honoured for abuse against women” - and given a life ban.  Plus, all Codes must make abusers ineligible for future awards - and must not be given high paying commentating, leadership or coaching roles. 2. No fault, stand down for allegations The National Rugby League has a 'no fault, stand down' rule for players, but we need to expand this. The legal system systemically fails women, and it takes far too long to get through the court system. Some clubs also stand down alleged perpetrators; banned from playing with the club until they admit to their crime, talk about it openly, and prove they are committed to changing their behaviour. 3. Sanctions for sexism The abuse female players, officials, referees, journalists and administrators cop on and off the field for simply doing their jobs, has to stop. We are researching measures to combat cyberharm, but we need to do more to protect women in, and of, the game. Education programs are great, but sanctions are the only way to send the message that racist, sexist and homophobic abuse is unacceptable. Don't worship physical talent. Great story to share with coaches and parents. (It's an AFL story but it applies to ALL sports everywhere). One of the greatest AFL players in the past 30 years was a superstar kid. He was brilliant every step of the way - rising up through the junior ranks to be a dominant player at the highest level. But. He also had issues with social drugs and alcohol abuse, repeatedly broke team rules requiring the club to cover his backside over and over again and eventually he shattered the Club's team culture by having sex with the wife of a team-mate. Everything went public and the issue was fought out in the media. The best article from that time was from the star player's wife, who wrote an amazing piece called "NO ONE TELLS THEM NO". In it she wrote about how his behavior as a senior player came about because his coaches, his Club officials, and his parents never said the word NO to him from an early age because all they saw was a super talented kid who could win them games. She argued - very correctly - that as he was allowed to get away with poor behavior and rule breaking as a kid, as a teen and now as a highly paid professional player, it was far too late to change him. Parents - No matter how much "talent" you think your child has - teach them values, build their character, set limits, encourage responsibility and accountability. Say NO! Coaches - do not allow the talent of the player determine what behaviors and attitudes you accept in practice, playing and off field. Say NO! Officials - do not adjust your policies and rules on discipline around the talent of the player. And be prepared to get rid of them regardless of how talented they may be - to save your Club. Say NO! ICYMI: Football Queensland aiming for six-figure participants by 2026: Football Queensland (FQ) have remained busy on the tools in building the framework required to materialize their aspirations, all through the implementation of The 2024-2026 Game Development Strategy. Acknowledging the popularity of the world's game within the state, CEO Robert Cavallucci disclosed that the development strategy plan is to make football “the game of choice” amongst Queenslanders. In correlation with the strategic referee plan released earlier in the month, the Development Strategy plan highlights women’s football, 50/50 parity amongst male and female participants FQ wishes to achieve 128,000 registered football club participants. The monumental hype that surrounded Australia’s maiden tenure as World Cup hosts has culminated in football governing bodies looking to transcend the sport within their respective states to unprecedented heights. It is common knowledge that the success and appreciation for the Matilda’s throughout their 2023 Women’s World Cup campaign leaves in its wake a tangible interest within football amongst potential female participants. FQ are also seeking to achieve 200,000 social participants, while vying to achieve further diversity amongst its existing participants. But how are FQ going climb the steep mountain? Pillar One: Recruitment and Opportunity In order to have a significant percentage increase within the number of official and social participants across the board involves a proactive approach. The fundamental aspect of achieving parity between genders is to amplify the dedicated focus upon fostering inclusivity. Through events crafted towards a vast variety of varying demographical and geographical communities, the programs created in order to showcase the sport of football, while attempting to attract new participants. In order to break the barriers FQ will investigate and identify strategic growth areas by conducting a geographical and demographical review. FC Bayern München signing Nestory Irankunda has had a successful individual season to farewell Adelaide United Football Club and their fans . We can see his attacking value (1.05) is way above average and more than compensates for his negative defensive value (-0.19). As an attacking midfielder (AM), 0.41 is also on the higher side. Beyond scoring, he has begun to facilitate a lot more. His success rate of finding a killer pass is quite high and if he can increase his volume of playing that final ball it will make him that much more dangerous to defences. At 0.73, his WR or actions per minute is around average just as his successful actions per minute is (SWR). A lot more to come from this young player. He loves the ball at his feet and taking on defenders before rifling in a powerful shot to test the keeper. If he can find more balance between shooting and playing a pass, he will be even more of a handful for defenders. He has played out wide a fair amount even though crossing is at this stage a weakness of his. A more central role or cutting in from out wide will yield more success for him so it’ll be on defenders to keep him wide. He puts in effort on defending and has some success but frustration and over-exuberance can occasionally see him give up fouls and miss tackles. Overall, a very dangerous attacking option

Best wishes to Tony. As to his appointment, there are two schools of thought on Australian national teams. The first, is that we should have a consistent style of play throughout all ages, preferably with an attacking approach, which all players are educated in. In this approach, coaches must be prepared both with junior national teams and can be selected from suitable external candidates as well. I’ve been speaking about this approach for 20 years. The second, is to appoint the best available coach at any point in time, their job being to be accountable for qualification and results without oversight as to style of play and medium to longer term aims. Given that Australia operates under the latter, Tony is a very good choice. Unlike 20 years ago, it’s no longer necessary to recruit abroad. Australian coaches are now highly trained and we have the largest pool of skilled and experienced (male) coaches in our history. The issue in both men’s and women’s however, is that the youth national teams are not functioning as a production line for senior national team coaches, leaving only external options. Spain, for example, recently won the Euros with the former Under 19, Under 21 and Under 23 coach. An important conversation to have.

This initiative aims to embed physical literacy principles across the sector. The action plan, to be developed in consultation with key stakeholders and overseen by the Advisory Group, will provide a clear roadmap to enhance the sporting experiences of Australians. MUST READ: Football Victoria encourages state teams to take part in Governance Workshop Series: Football Victoria are endorsing the joint partnership between the Victorian Government and VicSport, as football clubs across the state can become involved within the participation of case studies - dedicated to the understanding and importance of governance within sport. Three workshops will eventuate over the course of May, June and July. Industry experts, sport directors and operating officials will all be in attendance at each workshop, discussing their insight upon the plethora of information they possess in correlation to Board Policy & Procedure (completed April 3), Risk Management (TBC in May), Sports Integrity (June 6) and Diversity & Inclusion (TBC in July). VicSport are a Victorian non-for-profit organisation dedicated to attract as many Victorians as possible in participation and engagement across a variety of sports and/or physical activity. Working in conjunction with the Victorian Government, it is their duty to ensure that recreation within the state remains at its optimal level. Advocating, assisting and supporting its members since its inception in 1994, their extensive network branched out to over 3.9 million participants. Football within Victoria has quite the pulse. Engagement levels are high within the amount of participants across all abilities and genders. Knowing the importance of governance is fundamental for emerging and present clubs, hence the importance surrounding the FV in urging club officials in attending these various workshops. Football Victoria have made continuous strides in becoming more accessible and engaging to potential participants. All-abilities April is a symbol of the inclusivity in which the state has made across the last decade. Governance within sport is crucial. It covers a magnitude of aspects all required to be considered when operating an entity. Given the vast amount of contributors governance is essential for the promotion of accountability, sustainability and stability for a football club. Football Coaches Australia As the trial period is current, it is important to understand and recognise the value of good coaching At NPL we often get lost in the fantasy of ‘club’ but what is ( or should be ) more attractive is understanding their coaching staff, their football philosophy but more importantly what the club believes good coaching looks like. In some clubs the “canteen crew” can win trophies with some teams as coaching actually has little impact on the result - some players and teams are just “better” Parents of aspiring players should look at the evidence of performance not only on the league table but to see what kind of humans are being developed by the coaches therein. Some Clubs will spit you kid out at 18 when the only focus in senior football will be three points on the weekend. Coaches, good coaches have the ability to influence young peoples lives, well away from the pitch - and forever . Teaching football through instruction but mentoring and supporting players when they fail - and they will Sometimes this means hard conversations and actions. Great coaches take a longer view ( I see Ange ripped his best player off last night at 1/2 time against West Ham ) and look at how that action will ultimately assist and progress the player and the individual I am lost at why EVERY coach in Australia is not a member of Football Coaches Australia and why they think their licence course alone is the panacea to developing the very skills that should underpin their work on the pitch It is so much more than session plans guys As football and life are the same game - just played on different pitches Join today - (because you all think you are so busy I have attached the link)
