Some resume formats include a section called ‘Professional highlights.’ I wanted to capture one of those highlights on LinkedIn so that when I'm in my 80s, I can look back at my career and remember this moment—a moment I hold dear. As the Product Owner of a mobile app called CareKeeper, which helps aged care staff document data right after care is given. It is a fantastic product and recipient of the 2022 Victorian iAwards. It’s an inside joke in our team that “we’re the award-winning team,” and we must keep delivering new features to maintain that title. Timeframe: Testing is complete for version V2.3 of the app, and we’re ready for release. After a release, we usually send a notification to inform clients about updates, but sometimes the app users are unaware of the new features. John and JP had the idea to add a feature list within the app. I brought this request to our brilliant UX manager, Matt Sarah, asking for a simple pop-up listing the features. He delivered exactly that the next day. I said, “Yes, this looks great. Thanks!” Then Matt said, “Wait, I got creative yesterday. Let me show you an alternative design.” He showed me THE design. Like falling in love, some things can't be unseen. UX designers are so underrated in their contributions to an organisation. I have worked with some brilliant designers who have made me look at the world in a different light. I was like, “Matt, you can’t make me go back to that simple pop-up. Let’s check with Dean about the effort to build this amazing screen.” If Dean said the effort was too high, we’d go with the simpler version. TH is never short on talent. And Dean is the best of the lot. Dean said, “Give me 3 to 5 days; I can do it.” I was like, "Then we’re doing it! I’ll push the release by a week." The whole team—Matt, Dean, QA (Nikita, Prince, Onkar), JP, Skye, Emily, Sophia—flowed like a river, working in rhythm. They wrapped it up even before the estimate. It’s not the most valuable feature we delivered, but it’s one of my proudest moments. I cherish this moment so much because you need to let people do what they are brilliant in doing and allow them to bring their best selves to work. If I stuck with the original plan, I would have achieved the same result but only what I could envision. Right team members matter. Even more, Team culture matters. This post was for my memory lane.
