Want a better relationship with your Accountant? At nextAdvisory we talk with a lot of business owners who want to switch accountants. A frequent concern we hear is the current accountant is not proactive enough or they don’t get any advice. After letting them share more about themselves and their business, I circle back to this point, asking, can you give me an example so I can better understand. Queue the long pause. The point here is proactiveness and communication with an accountant is a two way street. In defence of accountants, we’re not mind readers. Accountants are a underused resource for business owners, reach out to them well before this stage in your business growth. It's not uncommon for a business owner / entrepreneur to have more than one business. There are lots of strategic and tax reasons for doing so. This often though creates the situation of inter-company loans, money effectively generated in one company and used in another. There are some practical considerations that you need to take into account but also what happens if the company that the money has been loaned from needs it back - is your other company in the position to repay. I find that people aren't considering this factor a lot of the time as they effectively may have control of both companies, but in reality you may want to consider this like any other debt within your accounts that you may have with unconnected parties. On paper inter-company loans can make a balance sheet look healthy, but without consideration of the risk of this not being repaid, this could tell a very different story and mask other issues that you should be protecting yourself against. This may be even more relevant if you one or more of the companies goes through an unfortunate turn of luck and needs to go through an insolvency process. So recycling and maximise your return on your money is great, but consider how "liquid" those funds are if you need to use them. #business #intercompany #loans

One of the recent enhancements to Xero is that you can now bulk void bills. So rather than having to click into a bill individually and void it, instead, from the list of bills to be paid, you can select the tick boxes for the bills you want to void and do it in bulk. I assume this has been a development based on user feedback and I'm curious about how often people need to bulk void bills. Very occasionally I'll have a duplicate or some other reason to void. But then I need to void a single bill. I don't think I've ever had to do a bulk load. Anyway, it's a new feature, so if it's useful to you then use it. And if you find that you are voiding a lot of bills then perhaps think about the process and what's going wrong and / or get in touch with me about outsourcing the bookkeeping so you don't need to spend time voiding bills anymore. #Xero #XeroCertified #XeroAdvisor
