In our latest Major Banks Analysis we found that Australian banks are experiencing a strong and steady performance, allowing for flexible capital returns. However, despite the second-highest half-year result since 2017, long-term trends seem to be returning, and earnings have taken a hit due to pressure on mortgage and deposit margins. On the bright side, non-interest income has increased for the second time in twelve months, but it still represents a small portion of total income. And as expenses rose and were offset by falling notables and credit expenses, the economy continued its ‘Goldilocks’ course. Today we had the opportunity to share our experiences and insights in helping clients navigate the complexity and challenges of pay compliance with David Koch. We discussed a range of topics from employment obligations that businesses need to know, proactive steps to manage compliance from the front and learnings from others. There is no silver bullet to managing pay compliance and businesses cannot outsource the risk - the responsibility starts from top down - promote a culture of compliance, embed fit for purpose systems/processes and proactively monitor and check for compliance regularly so that any fixes/adjustments can be made in a timely manner. ASIC has released its surveillance report for 2023-2024 Highlights: * Findings from financial reporting surveillances were largely consistent with prior periods and ASIC’s enduring focus areas, with a strong focus on material business risks * ASIC has monitored voluntary sustainability and climate change reporting of listed entities but did not identified any concerns around misleading or deceptive disclosures * The largest area of audit findings related to the audit of revenue and receivables *ASIC is to commence proactive surveillance focused on compliance with auditor independence and conflicts of interest requirements (and has written to auditors and CEOs of large audit firms on this matter) * Future surveillance will also expand to include more previously grandfathered proprietary companies, registrable superannuation entities, compliance with the consolidated entity disclosure statement requirements and climate-related risks. https://lnkd.in/gCNEkq6T

With financial year end not far away, organization's are reviewing the numbers, their strategy and as a result the capability on the Board and Executive team. There is a tremendous amount of re-structuring and changes in senior leadership about to take place. This summary highlights the recent moves, but it seems difficult to believe senior heads won't roll in the near future as performance slips. Time for some leadership.
