📊 I recently ran a poll to understand where the data function typically sits within organisations in Australia, and here are the results: - CIO/CTO: 59% - CFO: 27% - CDO: 14% It's fascinating to see how these figures compare to other regions such as the US and the UK. In the US, the trend leans more towards a dedicated Chief Data Officer (CDO) function, reflecting a growing emphasis on data-driven decision-making at the highest levels of leadership. In the UK, while many data functions still report to the CIO/CTO, there's a notable increase in data sitting now sitting under a CDO. These regional differences highlight the evolving landscape of data strategy and its integration within the C-suite. Before 2022, Flybuys—one of Australia’s biggest rewards programs—had four data teams, each with its own approach. The result? Redundancy, inconsistency, and systems that were tough to navigate. For data analysts, this setup meant relying on data engineers for new products instead of self-serving, which slowed down innovation. To change this, Flybuys’ Lead Enterprise Data Architect Milos Zikic and his team assessed two options: self-hosting dbt Core or moving to dbt Cloud. Their analysis showed that with dbt Cloud, everything from testing to version control and documentation came in one package—plus, it promised a 192% ROI. The impact was big: each analyst saved 143.6 hours annually (that’s 17 days), while engineers gained back 152.6 hours. 🤯 Two years in, dbt Cloud powers Flybuys’ production-grade data transformations, streamlining operations across the board. The Ongoing Debate on Domain/Industry Experience in Business Analysis. I've been recruiting in the Australian business analysis market for over 21 years 😱 and made over 350 successful BA placements. When I take a job briefing, EVERY Business Analyst role has its own unique set of requirements which invariably includes a request for project domain expertise. There’s a growing conversation in the business analysis community that strong BA skills are transferable, and for the record I 100% agree with this. BUT Day-to-day, I see a disconnect between idealism and reality. I can count on one hand, the number of hiring managers who are genuinely open to interviewing candidates without specific domain or industry experience. Government IT Contractors, are you drowning in the 'sea of sameness'?   A thought-provoking (AND VERY CURRENT) piece by Cristina Criddle in the Australian Financial Review highlights a critical issue in today's hiring landscape:   AI-driven tools are generating a 'sea of sameness’ in job applications.   With AI increasingly being used to draft resumes and cover letters, Criddle asserts that candidates are at risk of losing their unique voices, and companies may miss out on diverse talent.   The takeaway?    While AI can enhance efficiency, Criddle recommends maintaining authenticity and personal touch in applications. She encourages candidates to use AI as an aid, not a replacement, for their unique experiences and perspectives.   And so do I!   Here's my view:    I review hundreds of technology candidate resumes and applications per week, and this trend is SUPER evident.    Recently, I shortlisted 3 candidates for one role.   At the time of application review, I proofread all three.   All three, with nearly the EXACT same response to criteria.   All three were structured exactly the same, all three often with the same sentences generated by AI.    I recognise the value AI brings in automating tasks and boosting productivity, but when it comes to representing your personal brand to prospective employers, nothing replaces the power of your authentic voice.   Think about your resume and application as your own personal marketing material.   If the first impression a hiring manager has of you, your skills, and your capabilities.   Imagine trying to interpret someone's abilities when they look exactly the same as the next person.    My recommendation to you?   By all means, leverage AI for support and to increase productivity, but always ensure your resume and application genuinely reflect your experience and your tone of voice.    How do you balance AI efficiency while maintaining originality in your work? We’re big believers in the “spread your bets” mindset, and this recent news about UniSuper and Google Cloud is just the perfect example. Rare occasions are, well, rare, but they can still happen — whether it’s an unprecedented sequence of configuration events or a tornado hitting your only data center.
