How is Australia feeling? Australia's wellbeing has seen a slight increase, yet anxiety continues to worsen for the fifth consecutive survey. Concerns over the future are declining since the beginning of 2023, with financial stress reaching its highest point in 8 years. Notably, 1 in 3 Australians feel financially worse off compared to last year, particularly impacting those aged between 30-49 years. Household savings are a significant worry, with 3 in 4 Australians actively trying to save. Debt stress has also risen to a survey high, primarily driven by loans from family & friends and pay day loans. Interestingly, 1 in 5 Australians hold BNPL debt, which surprisingly has the lowest impact on debt stress levels. The report provides a detailed breakdown of Australia's wellbeing, shedding light on the challenges faced by different demographics. Those most affected are individuals who do not own homes, are more likely to rent, have less stable employment, are under 50, earn lower incomes, and are more likely to be women. It's becoming increasingly difficult and frustrating to see domestic violence in the news, almost daily. And so much worse when one factors in #financialabuse which can continue long after the immediate threat of DV is mitigated. #respectandprotect asks businesses to be vigilant for the ways in which their business or service could inadvertently enable an abuser. And put provisions in their terms and conditions that specifically prevent it. The first is a challenge we readily accept. But the second one is incredibly easy. To day we are in rare company of 22 businesses that have signed up. By tomorrow, I hope we are a mere logo speck on the page. The Reserve Bank of Australia has commenced a review of merchant card payment costs and surcharging. We have published an issues paper inviting stakeholders to provide feedback. Australians extensively use cards to pay for goods and services. They benefit from the convenience and security provided by card payments. However, in an environment of heightened concern around the cost of living, card payment costs and surcharging are attracting more attention from merchants and consumers. These issues are linked, since merchants would be less likely to surcharge consumers if card payment costs were lower. It is timely, therefore, to review whether regulatory settings could be adjusted to put further downward pressure on merchant card payment costs and whether the RBA’s surcharging framework remains fit for purpose. This recognises that many years have passed since these rules first came into effect. Stakeholders can provide written submissions by 3 December 2024. Delivering targeted measures to support Australians to manage cost of living pressures and help businesses grow is crucial. At the same time it is important stubborn inflation is curbed as it continues to hurt every household and business. I was pleased to see support to help small businesses grow such as the extension of the instant asset write-off scheme, as well as measures to increase our nation’s housing supply in last night’s Budget. There's no simple fix to the housing crisis, but support for innovative solutions, like build-to-rent will help. Our innovative customers, Hacer Group and Local: Residential who are constructing build-to-rent accommodation, recently showed me around their site in Kensington, Victoria. It's a truly great example of how business, government and community can work together to create affordable housing solutions. Today as part of NAB 2024 Annual Reporting suite, we’ve released our third stand-alone Climate Report. The report provides updates on the bank’s delivery of its Climate Strategy and outlines how we are supporting our customers to decarbonise, build resilience and realise the economic opportunities of the transition. It is a hefty piece of work, and I am grateful to my team and our colleagues across the bank who help bring it to life. A couple of call outs for 2024: - NAB has now set 12 sector decarbonisation targets across 8 high-emitting sectors and we’re working with our customers to progress them. - NAB contributed $7.3bn of environmental finance in 2024, strong progress on the $80bn by 2030 environmental finance ambition we set this year. - We continue to invest in the capability of our colleagues, with almost 8,000 colleagues supported with foundational climate training to date. - We’re also investing in climate data, technologies and innovation to develop additional capability to support our customers. - Achieving a 57% reduction in NAB's operational Scope 1 and 2 (market-based method) GHG emissions compared to our 2022 baseline. - We’ve continued to develop the framework for our Customer Transition Plans, ahead of implementation for in-scope customers in October next year. Looking ahead, NAB will continue to act and progress on our roadmap to 2050, and we’ll be right alongside our customers, supporting them to take action too. It's a good time to be in technology!  The word technology appears no less than 101 times in the Westpac Annual Report - emphasising the critical link between good technical engineering and great business outcomes. I am immensely proud of my Mortgage Technology team who continue to run world class technology services and enable great business outcomes through their technology delivery. In 24 months, we have halved the time taken to decision an average home loan to an industry leading 4.8 days in our broker channel. The result is a 41 point increase in Broker NPS! These solid results are underpinned by a suite of automations and integrations the technology team has delivered throughout the year. We're piloting new AI tech to streamline home loan assessments to further enable great customer outcomes and drive efficiency in our value chain. This year we also enabled the Sustainable Upgrades home and investor loans with support of the Clean Energy Finance Corporation.  Our digital mortgage continues to build momentum with over $4B settled to date and we have a clear plan to accelerate our technology simplification through UNITE.
