The Ethical Imperative in AI Development The Senate's report underscores the urgency for standalone AI legislation to protect Australian data and creativity. However, beyond regulatory measures, there's a moral obligation for tech companies to engage transparently with the communities they impact. This involves obtaining informed consent, ensuring fair compensation for the use of creative works, and being accountable for how data is utilized. If everyone in your organisation has access to an AI copilot of some kind, should you boil your strategy down to a default prompt or instruction for the AI tool to reference? It would make sense given that your strategy guides everything your organisation is working towards. Perhaps different divisions would have their own 'strategy prompt' baked into their AI tools? Perhaps AI will actually help align and orient decision-making towards the strategy? The AI tool might always be asking: is this activity aligned to our strategy? Would the AI tool suggest useful ways to increase alignment? #ai

Is the Australian government about to accidentally ban Minecraft and Roblox? The proposed definition of 'social media' in the proposed ban would clearly include multiplayer games like Minecraft and Roblox, and game networks like Xbox Live. So, in Australia, there's no easy way to opt out of Meta's new #enshittification move of training its #AI on all your words and images, a policy which takes effect from 26th June. Or is there? I asked Meta AI's chat bot how to do this, and here's how the conversation went: > Tell me how to opt out of my data being used to train AI META AI RESPONSE: To opt out of your data being used to train AI, you can submit a request through the Meta Privacy Center. Here's how: 1. Go to (link unavailable) 2. Click on "Settings" (icon) in the top right corner 3. Click on "Meta's use of AI and machine learning" 4. Scroll down to "Control how your data is used to improve Meta's products and services" 5. Select "Submit a request" under "Use of data for AI and machine learning" 6. Fill out the form with your name, email address, and a brief description of your request (e.g., "Opt out of AI training data usage") 7. We are working on an intricate challenge in modern healthcare in #Australia to tackle the portability issue of causal CDSS from one healthcare provider to another healthcare provider by leveraging the meta-heuristic approach and AI. To mitigate this challenge, we have proposed an Adaptive Semantic Framework (ASF) which will do the needful adjustments in the existing CDSS according to a new environment. The abstract of our paper is given below: Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) are a critical part of modern healthcare, assisting healthcare practitioners in making precise decisions. However, most of the existing CDSSs are static, which makes adaptation to a new environment or changes in the same environment challenging. This is where the Adaptive Semantic Framework (ASF) comes in. In a recent paper, a team proposed an ASF for CDSS adaptation to a changing environment. The framework includes various methods such as Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS) and Data-Driven Elements (DDE) to adjust the CDSS to new conditions. This framework addresses two significant challenges of CDSS: its maintenance and the issue of portability across different hospitals with varying data ecosystems. Any Procreate users in the house? One of Australia's most UNREAL & under-the-radar companies of all time just won the Apple Design Award for Innovation, another win for the Tasmanian companies/ bootstrapped companies/ agency-to-product companies like Linktree et al. (shoutout to Alex Zaccaria & Anthony Zaccaria again) This company is wild. Undoubtedly one of my all time favs and a company to champion loudly here in AU. They've been around for well over a decade, you have to move to Hobart to work for them, frequently number 1 paid app on Apple store they're used by beginner->pro designers all around the world (Stranger Things titles were made on Procreate) and I'd hazard a guess the fact they don't fundraise might have something to do with it, which we've seen plenty of times before *cough* Envato *Cough* I'll talk about this recent achievement of theirs on todays Disrupt Radio segment 'Moolah' with Omar de Silva at 10am, and like a terminator, I simply won't stop until I can grab Procreate founder James Cuda for a profile piece in the near future, so if I'm successful at that, you'll know I never stopped hounding their poor team. What a story to be celebrated. Not a Tractor Ventures funded company at all, but most certainly living the ethos our team were inspired by to create the company in the first place. Unreal.

AI Video Assessments Some great insights from Professor Danny Lui from Sydney Uni as he talks about multi-modal assessments. It's worth a watch to see some great capabilities. AI used in this video includes: * Luma * Udio * HeyGen * Chat GPT 4.0 * Elevenlabs Students in other sectors (e.g., vocational training and small business) may struggle with digital skills when using these AI tools. There were quite a few steps involved. There are quite a few Gen AI video tools out there, and Google Vids launching next year will be a one-stop shop to do all the things these 5 Gen AI tools are currently doing. Google Vids is not yet widely available on paid Workplace subscriptions, but it is available to some Edu accounts. Quantum Computing: Future Potential, AI: Here & Now. There’s been a lot of buzz around Quantum Compute of late. Especially with the Australian Govt recent somewhat controversial announcement of almost A$1bn in funding for the US-based quantum-startup PsiQuantum. The investment makes PsiQuantum the world's most funded independent quantum company. Whilst much of the technical qubit discussion is admittedly above my pay scale, there's a pressing reality we perhaps can't ignore: quantum computing, according to many experts, is still years away and with uncertain outcomes. Meanwhile, AI is here now, delivering real results that we shouldn’t fall behind on. A recent study by researchers from Microsoft and the Scalable Parallel Computing Lab at ETH Zurich (SPCL@ETH) provided a harsh reality check for those hyping the potential of quantum computers. They found that off-the-shelf GPUs outperform these machines in practical applications. Their paper demonstrated that, short of exceptional improvements in hardware & software, even future quantum systems are unlikely to achieve practical speeds in workloads like drug discovery, material sciences & weather forecasting. To highlight this, they pitted a hypothetical quantum system with 10,000 error-correcting qubits against a classical computer equipped with a single NVIDIA A100 GPU, and the GPU came out well ahead. Sovereign Large Language Model (LLM) AI capabilities are paramount for maintaining Australia’s competitiveness & technological autonomy. Whilst A$1BN is being spent on PsiQuantum, experts emphasise that Australia could establish a sovereign AI capability for around $100 million in compute costs. In a recent Senate inquiry into AI adoption, Professor Nicholas Davis from the University of Technology Sydney explained that Australia has three key options, being: - Accept US market-leading LLM’s with their transparency & data set limitations. - Use open-source models and accept a big performance gap. - Develop a sovereign LLM using Australian data & experts. Greens Senator David Shoebridge highlighted that a $100m investment is a surprisingly low price for such critical sovereign capacity, yet the Government's AI funding commitment in the last Budget was ~$40m, primarily for regulatory efforts over 5 years. Simon Bush, CEO of the AIIA, noted this as insufficient, comparing it to the UK’s £2bn, Singapore’s US$5bn, & Canada’s US$2.4bn investments. Bush warned that without significantly more funding and urgency, Australia risks falling well behind its global competitors. It's clear: Quantum Computing is on the horizon, but AI is here, demanding immediate attention & investment. Anyone else noticed how polarised and disjointed the discourse around AI has become? The pic below is a random but typical screenshot from my Medium feed. On the one hand there are the AGI evangelists with their full throated embrace of super intelligence magic (in the absence of reason, and reasoning haha). On the other hand we have those who have lost the baby by spilling all the bath water. No, AI is not a ponzi scheme, please go and google it (no, don’t ask ChatGPT). How about we recognise that we have built one of the most powerful, language-based tech ever invented. Mega useful. And let’s build great products over the top of it. Stop chasing AGI. Stop talking it down. Let’s figure out how this can be made as useful as possible. #ai #genai #realismneeded

Chris Miller’s Chip War provided an interesting peek into the geopolitics of chips and semiconductors. As AI ecosystem grows, the other battle ground will be global AI talent. The Global AI Talent tracker 2.0 from think tank MacroPolo at the The Paulson Institute tracks top tier AI research talent flow. It uses data from Neural Information Processing Systems conference (NeurIPS). The December 2022 edition of the conference received a record-breaking 2,671 papers with an acceptance rate of 25.6%. The trends from this analysis are not surprising but raise important questions for countries trying to develop, retain internal talent and be an inviting ecosystem for external talent. And while this analysis is focused on top tier research, there is also the general question of Ai talent across functions - engineering, business development, sales etc. ➡️ The salaries for top tier AI research in US big tech companies is frankly unmatched, so is the scale. While India and China are showing growing signs of talent retention, there is still an outflow from these countries to the US. ➡️ Europe and UK have good opportunities for AI research too but not matched with the US (in terms of scale and size). And while everyday work might be in English, anyone immigrating to these countries needs to feel culturally integrated too. Language can be a barrier here for many and so could be overly protectionist signals from the government and the general sentiment related to immigration. ➡️ Visa, immigration, mobility - perhaps, for the top most tier talent, this isn’t as much of a barrier but in general, especially since the recent round of layoffs, getting a visa sponsorship has been akin to climbing an 8000 meter peak. Of course, we are in a digitally connected world with remote opportunities but still something for countries to consider, especially the ease of paperwork (there are policies like golden visa or special talent visa but they are all intensive and competitive). https://lnkd.in/evV2EURk

Leverage the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to unlock the secrets of advanced quantum computing. This once seemingly impossible feat may soon become a reality, as suggested by new research from Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO. The research, published in the prestigious Physical Review Research journal, presents a fascinating and important concept. It indicates AI’s remarkable potential to process and resolve quantum errors, which are famously termed as ‘qubit noise’. Overcoming this noise barrier is crucial because it will enable quantum computers to achieve their full potential, performing complex calculations at speeds unimaginable with classical computers. Dr. Muhammad Usman, the leader of CSIRO’s Data61 Quantum Systems Team, reveals the role of AI in making this error correction process efficient. His team employed an AI neural network syndrome decoder to identify errors and make appropriate corrections. “Our work for the first time establishes that a machine learning-based decoder can, in principle, process error information obtained directly from measurements on IBM devices and suggest suitable corrections despite the very complex nature of noise,” Usman explained...
