Ever found yourself in a Coles or Woolies (now Endeavour) bottle shop and marvelled at the massive range of wine under $30? At Vino Cammino, precisely 0 bottles from our range retail under $30. We think much of the difference is driven by ownership. Thanks to an excellent resource maintained by The Real Review (link in comments), we know that that there are over 400 wine brands owned by supermarkets and other large corporate groups in Australia. Endeavour alone own 227. Coles have 84. And each of those brands have their own range of bottles, so it’s likely that thousands of bottles on big brand Australian bottle shop shelves are owned by a small handful of companies (but of course, you won’t read about it on the labels). So, how do you think those companies encourage (or make) decisions in the production of those wines? How would they prioritise cost, durability, and volume against sustainability, quality and complexity of flavour? Are they crafting a wine to offer the best expression of grape and place or something calculated at the last quarterly meeting of the finance, analytics and marketing teams? Of course, some nice wines are made at low price points. It's just hard to find them in a tidal wave of blandness disguised by clever labels. All of the wines at Vino Cammino have one owner: it’s the winemaker and their family. Hungry Jack's Franchisee Dispute - How close is too close? A NSW Hungry Jack's franchisee took Federal Court action to stop the franchisor from launching 2 new Hungry Jack's restaurants too close to its own stores in Cooranbong and Dora Creek. The franchisee claimed that HJ's opening those stores breached the restraint of trade clauses in the franchise agreements and section 6 of the Franchising Code (which requires that the parties act in good faith with each other). The parties settled the case on a confidential basis last Friday. Not having competitors in too close proximity is a fundamental part of what franchisees are paying for when they enter franchise agreements. How close is too close is usually set out in the franchise agreement. Australia is the most heavily franchised country in the world. I've often thought it is something to do with Australians’ get up and go mentality - so many people willing to start small businesses and work all hours to make them a success. Good franchising systems can be a fantastic way to start a small business with someone holding your hand through the process with tried & tested products and systems. Bad franchise systems can financially break you with little to no help along the way and just a take take take. Australia's run of solid retail growth through 2024 continued in August. For August 2024: 🛍️ Retails turnover was up 0.7% MoM 🛍️ Retails turnover was up 3.1% YoY 🛍️ Total turnover was $36,474 million (almost a record). Retail turnover remains quite healthy in August and absent some unforeseen disaster, we will end the year with turnover back at record levels. While the growth rate of retail turnover has been slower then trend over the last two year, it is still growing and in raw terms remains well above long term trend levels. Ultimately, retail turnover remains in a very strong place.

JB Hi-Fi reported Australian same store sales down 0.3 per cent and The Good Guys sales 0.8 per cent lower in the March quarter, compared to the same time last year. But JB HI-FI New Zealand same store sales have lifted 2.9% in the March quarter, versus the same comparable period. The Good Guys sales however have slid 7.3 per cent over the nine months to March 31. Vendor and buyer activity high, except in Victoria and Tasmania 1. Vendor and buyer activity nationwide is increasing, with 38,258 freshly advertised properties tracked over the past four weeks, almost 18% more than the same time last year. 2. Higher vendor activity may be due to a combination of factors such as previous dearth of listings, rising financial pressure, and desire to de-risk balance sheets. 3. Most regions are showing enough buyer demand to absorb the higher flow of listings, with total number of homes advertised for sale nationally holding relatively flat. 4. Listings are elevated in some markets like Melbourne, Hobart, Regional Victoria, and Regional Tasmania, leading to softer value growth. 5. Franchise news: Guzman and Gomez are planning to debut on the Australian Stock Exchange preparing to float on June 20 with a valuation of $2.2 billion. They are Australia’s fastest-growing burrito chain, with a store footprint of 185 in Australia, 16 overseas. They plan to have more than 1000 restaurants in their network over the next 20 years, including 30 new restaurants for the 2025 financial year.
