The importance of partnerships with Indigenous communities was the most significant theme in the 2-day Gippsland New Energy conference. Daniel Miller, CEO of GLaWAC, launched its “Pathways to Partnerships” https://lnkd.in/gkTZ6u5J He said: “What we’re interested in is a transition from exclusion to collaboration, a pathway that integrates our mob into project planning right from the start.” We heard from Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio about the significance of these partnerships to drive the energy transition. I totally agree. Next we need to see these partnerships translated to measurable outcomes for Indigenous communities and the project proponent. When we have measurable benefits from socio-economic and cultural heritage as well as environmental, project timelines and financial benefits we will be able to usher in a new era of real win-win-win solutions for Indigenous, government and the developer. We want to do trials for how these partnerships can deliver for the State and all its citizens, for the Indigenous community, the environment, energy transition and create new project business models. A new report from Deloitte found that the Northern Territory’s $26 million Resourcing the Territory initiative that took place from 2018 to 2022 “led to substantial investments in the NT”. According to the Northern Territory Government, the Resourcing the Territory’s exploration grants program supported 38 projects by 30 companies in the 2023–24 financial year. “The commencement of the initiative in 2018 correlated with a rise in exploration expenditure in the NT,” Deloitte’s outcome evaluation report said. “Since 2018, there has been a noticeable increase in exploration expenditure, with a 38 per cent overall increase between 2018 and 2022. $NTU - Heavy rare earth developer, Northern Minerals is pleased to advise new assay results from the mineral resource definition drilling program at Wolverine deposit. The Browns Range Heavy Rare Earth (HRE) Project is located approximately 160km southeast of the town of Halls Creek, in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The results relate to the mineral resource definition drilling program at the Wolverine deposit during FY Q2-Q3 2024, and one remaining drillhole from the previous ore characterization and geotechnical drilling program completed in FY Q3 2023. Executive Chairman Mr. Nick Curtis AM commented: “The new assay results are very encouraging and emphasise the unique nature of the Browns Range system. These results materially increase confidence in the development of the Wolverine deposit as the first mine within the larger Browns Range system. The exceptional results of the newest Wolverine resource definition drilling program and the increased geological understanding from the drill results and the structural association model supports our regional geological understanding and suggests high-grade opportunities beyond the Wolverine deposit out across the broader Browns Range system. This is encouraging for future exploration success. We are grateful that the Company was able to progress this Program as a result of the grant monies received from the Federal Government. We also are very appreciative of the support we have received from our Native Title Partners - The Jaru People who assisted in ensuring required heritage surveys were completed prior to the campaign commencing. The key findings from the 2023 survey "The state of safety reporting culture in Queensland's mining industry" are as follows: ✅Reporting Culture: Queensland’s mine workers generally report safety concerns and understand the importance of reporting near misses and high potential incidents. ✅Team Support: One of the top strengths identified was team support for safety, indicating that workers look out for each other, stop work if unsafe, and follow safety procedures. ✅Leadership: Frontline leaders and supervisors typically encourage safe action and reporting of incidents. Senior leaders also encourage reporting and investigate when incidents are reported. 🌟Opportunity Areas: 📌The report highlighted the need for clearer and easier-to-use reporting systems, better recognition of positive safety behaviours, and more involvement of frontline workers in safety initiatives. 📌Suggestions for senior leaders include providing more timely feedback on safety concerns and increasing interaction with frontline workers to foster a positive safety culture. 📌The report sets a benchmark for the industry to measure its safety reporting culture against in the future and identifies key opportunities and barriers to achieving a responsive and effective safety reporting culture. Earlier this week, our CEO Tony Chappel had the opportunity to engage with NSW Mining members, experts and government leaders. The 2024 New South Wales Mining Health, Safety, Environment & Community Conference was an excellent platform to share our advancements with the EPA's Climate Change Policy and Action Plan. It also enabled meaningful interactions with key leaders and businesses navigating the net-zero transition in the mining industry. Our ongoing engagement in the climate change and mining sector is extensive. Recently, we surveyed over 2,000 license holders to better understand their emissions sources, current climate actions, and resilience challenges. We also discussed the formation of the EPA Climate Change Mining Advisory Group and the public consultation on our draft Climate Change Assessment Requirements and Guide for large emitters, covering offsets and transitional measures. The journey to net-zero presents both opportunities and challenges for NSW's mining sector. Below is the summary of the #CSIRO report into Australian #attitudes to mining in 2024. It has a couple of encouraging trends....BUT The fact that about on third of Australians of voting age believe Australia should reduce mining activity should be a concern for all, and over 60% believe mining has negative environmental impacts. With the Samarco Brazilian tailings dam disaster settlement in the press and a complete lack of front foot arguments by miners that they can demonstrate overall BETTER #environmentaloutcomes suggest a lack of courage and no-one prepared to offset acknowledge poor performance with the benefits of the materials we mine for the energy transition and fighting climate change. Someone has to be brave enough to say....there will be a balance and whilst mining is also dangerous, we have over the last 20 years really turned that around and we are doing the same in terms of environmental impacts too. Some good news: - The Vale Mining leases in the Carajas region of the Amazon actually have #protected the #rainforest and its habitat from clearing and farming - that Red Dog mine, #Alaska has cleaned up the natural acid drainage into the river from formerly unmined but exposed sulphides, such that salmon now come upstream to the mine to spawn. - That the German mining industry as cleaned up river seepage of uranium for old Soviet workings in East Germany - That the mining industry is replacing onsite FIFO workers with offsite remote worker, that saves massively on aviation fuel being burned for FIFO and overall FIFO rosters are being increased for 8/6 to 14/7 further reducing fuel CO2 emissions However, even if we say that we will still be distrusted based on the small number of highly visible failures we have to deal with. Many of these failures though are not lack of attention to ESG or DEI or mental health, but a natural result of heavy industry. Let's not forget that construction, agriculture, and manufacturing, tourism all affect the environment, peoples safety and impact local outcomes. If we are not to see our scorecard as a "fail", we need to all raise our heads above the trenches and be prepared to actively engage with the rest of society so they can better understand the huge benefits exploration and mining brings....for arguably very small environmental and social impact. Australia is a large and well endowed country. Lets not allow ourselves to slip into the realm of complacency thinking we are somehow the "Lucky Country" and always will be no matter what we do or do not do.

Over the 6months “Transfoorm” continues to create highly engaged teams with the recent “Strengths Based workshop” (pictured is Crew D) in the Refinery Maintenance department at Olympic Dam, head of Copper South Australia. Realising the unique differences between each other and now having effective ways to communicate with more appreciation/respect for each others talents is only enhancing BHPs foundational value to, “Empower The People” From this place of “empowered people” we are SIMULTANEOUSLY dissolving misunderstandings between team members, leading to greater engagement and creating higher levels of productivity from the ground up. Transfoorm has been working with the top down also, which lead to the pioneering of this kind of workshop with the frontline crew! The Refinery Maintenance department at Olympic Dam have played a large part in attaining new site records in copper production the last quarter. Remember all the protocols and procedures are STANDING on top of the foundational value of Empower The People. I fundamentally disagree with the following quote.. “Many hands make light work”, It is an outdated mindset… Instead, I believe as a “cultural transformation leader” that “Engaged ppl create production records” Transfoorm is assisting BHP Olympic Dam to not only simultaneously set the tone for all “global mining cultures”, but are getting record tonnes of copper out the door while doing so. Delighted to have the opportunity today to explore some of the tensions and opportunities emerging for land access brought about by the energy transition with this outstanding group of people (and a big shout out to Catherine Garlick who we missed!). We discussed; -tensions for exploration and new mines in an environment where land competition is increased - opportunities for re-purposing mining assets and land for renewable energy projects -how operating and new mines may consider working with renewable energy development projects - potential opportunity created through WA’s new diversification lease tenure - how benefit sharing arrangements with communities have evolved with relevance for mining and renewable energy projects - considering access to pre-competitive data for activating the mining estate for renewable energy projects - questions on who is responsible for planning and identifying potential sterilisation risks The energy transition is giving rise to a new conversation on how we use land with significant implications for mining. There are both opportunities and tensions created by renewable energy project development and as an industry we should be looking across our exploration, operating, closing and legacy mines estate.

It was my pleasure to attend and speak today at the 2024 New South Wales Mining Health, Safety, Environment & Community Conference. It gave me the opportunity to not only update the audience on the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA)'s progress implementing our Climate Change Policy and Action Plan, but time to engage with some of the leaders and businesses directly impacted by the net-zero transition in the mining sector. Importantly, the conference allowed me to listen to and learn from NSW Mining members, experts and leaders within the government and mining sector. It is the lived experiences of stakeholders on the ground that is key to creating meaningful policy and regulation. Today’s conference builds on the stakeholder engagement we have been doing in the climate change and mining space. This includes surveying over 2,000 license holders to gather crucial information about their main emissions source, what climate action they are already taking and the evolving resilience challenges they face. The establishment of the EPA climate change mining advisory group, and our public consultation on the draft Climate Change Assessment Requirements and Guide for large emitters, the proposer accounting for offsets and transitional measures were all valuable topics of discussion. Achieving net-zero will bring both opportunities and challenges for mining in NSW. Working consistently on these issues with open minds and real dialogue is the best way to achieve the long term changes that will protect the prosperity and wellbeing of future generations. At Agreement Hub, we’re increasingly being asked by companies how they can be ‘best practice’ when working with their Aboriginal Corporation stakeholders.  While I don’t know what best practice is exactly, I know that it's more than handing out company branded merch at a barbecue. If a company gets the following foundations in place, then it’s in a good place to build on these foundations with the Aboriginal Corporation and the Traditional Owners:  1.        Honour your commitments: If you've agreed to something, do it.  Compliance with agreements and any outward facing policies is a good place to start. 2.        One point of contact: Aboriginal Corporations can be inundated with requests, particularly in busy areas, whether it be for surveys or negotiations. It can help if someone within the team has the responsibility to organise. 3.        Share opportunities: Let Aboriginal Corporations know about job openings or contracts that are coming up, especially if you're not obliged to.  The same goes for cultural awareness training, request (and pay for) training for your team. 4.        Get organised: Organise your company’s policies, agreements etc into a plan of some kind.  It doesn’t matter what you call it, it’s helpful to have one that is kept updated and that the team knows about.  For example, if your company has employment obligations, your HR team needs to know about them.  5.        Provide updates: Share regular updates on what you're doing, even if you don't have to because it demonstrates that you value the Aboriginal Corporations’ involvement and feedback. 6.  Respect the process:  Go through the front door.  Be mindful of how any community relations activities can impact the Aboriginal Corporation’s governance structures.

Why Joining a Board or Committee Matters: Passion Fuels Progress When you’re on a board or committee that aligns with your passions, it’s not just about giving back—it’s about igniting your creativity, focus, and excitement for something meaningful. As the Vendor Liaison for the Perth Gem and Mineral Show, I’ve experienced this firsthand. This role kept me energized and focused, as I worked to pioneer a fresh concept: a Gem Show, but presented by an academic, not-for-profit organization, set in the dynamic and growing mineral collecting community of Perth, Western Australia. It feels very much like breaking new ground. It’s a space where vendors, enthusiasts, and the public come together in a way that celebrates education, collaboration, and passion for minerals, gems, and fossils. The opportunity to help shape such an event—a departure from traditional for-profit gem shows—is not just rewarding, its inspiring. I find I am more engaged in hearing and helping others with their projects that require innovation, compromise and vision. Challenges are suddenly fun. Being part of a committee allowed me to bring new ideas to life and push boundaries in how events like these are imagined and executed. It’s proof that when you combine your expertise with a mission that excites you, the results can be transformative—for you and the community you serve. If you’ve ever considered joining a board or committee that aligns with your passions, let this be your sign. You never know what fresh perspectives you might bring—or how much you’ll grow—when you dive in.
