One of the best explainers on the current state of the News Media Bargaining Code I've read. Well done Kalila Welch and Paul McIntyre on a great and in-depth article! There is indeed room for interpretation given the lack of a clear definition of "public significance" under the Code, but it's what we have to work with. There's no question that journalistic culture and lifestyle content are essential in shaping public debate and decision-making. If you had seen the rigorous effort required for our acceptance on the register, I’m confident you'd agree that this content falls under the definition of "Core News". However, the practical benefits of being included on the register remain unclear, as no tech platform has been designated, rendering it essentially worthless. We've strongly backed the concept of a tax levy on advertising above a certain threshold, which could be distributed by the government to support journalist roles and increase the diversity of the Australian media sector—especially when the vast majority of funds flow to Google, Meta, and TikTok, leaving publishers who create important work struggling, as we've seen with recent redundancies across the sector.

Conversational podcasts need NOT be boring exchanges and I will die on this hill! Don't believe me? THIS clip here is proof that you can ABSOLUTELY convey the same information with a good story! DISCLAIMER: I worked with Boris Epstein at 1st10 to ideate and produce the #1st10Podcast, and that includes doing guest research and episode prep. One of things I always stress in all my episode prep is that we need to frame questions in a way that it elicit anecdotes instead of information. For instance, when prepping for this episode, a quick look at Andrew's LinkedIn profile revealed that he had had stints at 4 of the 5 FAANG companies as an intern. And that meant there was definitely scope to compare and contrast his experiences. But asking something like "Why is company 1 different than company 2?" would have yielded (slightly opinionated but) pure information as an answer. So, we rephrased the question in the prep document thus: "Andrew, you interned at 3 of the 5 FAANG companies while still in college - Amazon, Google, and Facebook, with a brief stint at Microsoft as well. Talk us through how you ended up getting your first full-time job at Facebook?" This instantly puts the guest in anecdote-mode because we are now asking him to tell us the STORY of him landing the job with Facebook! Every one loves telling stories, don't they? The icing on the cake was that Andrew turned out to be such a natural storyteller! 😊 --- PS: Now I'm thinking I should putting together a list of 'advice' for how to be a great GUEST on podcasts. Yeah, GUEST! Because there is enough material out there about how to be a great podcast HOST but very little on how to be a great GUEST... And, IMHO, a good podcast episode requires both to be at the top of their storytelling game... 🎯 The only question is how should I format it - text (like this) or an image carousel? Drop a comment or something?!

Are you headed to NAB with an open mind or playing defence? The article from NAB Amplify explores the current and future impact of AI on the media and entertainment industries. Andy Maltz, a seasoned professional in the media sector, moderates a panel discussing the integration of AI in media production and distribution. Maltz emphasizes the importance of understanding AI's realistic capabilities and its implications without panic, comparing AI’s adoption to historical tech disruptions in media like the standardization of film formats and digital innovations. Panelists highlight concerns about content authenticity and the licensing for AI model training, emphasizing a need for standardized solutions to preserve the integrity of media in the age of AI. How to Think About AI in Entertainment and Not Short Circuit? This title of the panel is interesting and I think we are going to see a lot of resistance and broken circuits as the reality of Machine Learning and Generative AI spreads across Las Vegas next week. Drawing parallels between the disruption caused in the Broadcast industry by live streaming starting in the late 90’s and AI in media today, I cannot help but observe similarities in this initial resistance followed by eventual mainstream adoption. However, the acceleration of technological disruption is markedly faster in the current AI cycles. Where Live streaming gradually shifted the media landscape over several years (Even decades), AI's impact is more rapid and extensive, affecting multiple aspects of media creation, contribution and distribution simultaneously. This comparison underscores a broader trend towards a need for faster integration of emerging technologies in these Machine (processor) driven times. The rapid growth is facilitated by the same network, storage and processing advances except now we already have the digital infrastructures and the global connectivity enabled by the internet, that Live Streaming grew from. What used to be years and decades long cycles of disruption and transformation are now measured in weeks and months. Those that leave NAB 2024 with anything less than urgency to enbrace AI will return next year (or not) in a very different environment than we are in now. If you’ve been paying attention, it shouldn’t shock you, but SUNO just bagged a cool $125m in their latest funding round, but unless your name happens to be Mikey, Georg, Martin, or Keenan, it's not all avocado toast and craft beer right now. Here's the lowdown on why some folks (including this guy) are side-eyeing this cash infusion: Mixtape Drama: The buzz is all about whether SUNO's been spinning tracks without giving props to the OG artists. Their AI's dropping beats that feel a bit too familiar (especially if you’re down with the hits of the last decade), and peeps are wondering if they're cribbing from the classics without a nod (or a payout) to the creators. Not cool, right? Ghosting on the Deets: SUNO's playing it all mysterious with what's feeding their AI brain. No one knows if they're swiping tracks left and right, and considering how familiar some if it’s output sounds, that’s got the rumor mill churning. If it turns out they're not keeping it 100, they might find themselves in a legal mosh pit. Disrupting the Flow: AI's slinging tunes like a barista slings espresso shots, which, ok, sure, it IS rad for shaking up the old-school music moguls, who definitely need some shaking. But it could also start throwing a wrench in how musicians make their cheddar, and that's sparking the bigger debate: Can AI jams hold a candle to human-crafted bangers? I’d argue that answer depends on how discerning a music fan you are, which only make the issue more complex. Hype Train: The big bucks pouring into SUNO are like the hype for a secret show with a mystery guest – everyone wants in, even if we have o idea what it is. But will it live up to the hype, or will it be a one-hit-wonder? That's the 125 million-dollar question. The Ethical Remix: As AI companies like SUNO work at trying to DJ our lives, we've gotta think about the rules of the dance floor. Are we giving credit where it's due? Do we care about who - or what- makes our music? Are we ready for robots to take the stage? At the end of the day, it’s going to be about finding that sweet spot between innovation and keeping it real. But for now, while SUNO's making waves like a fresh vinyl find in a thrift shop, let’s also make sure we give a heads-up to the tech world - to keep it ethical and not just chase the next big drop.
