There has been a lot of hype around the Rust programming language. Most articles and blogs I read are heavy on promises, and a little light on testing. I’ve done a simple comparison between a lambda written in Python vs the same lambda written in Rust. Both use the official AWS SDKs. Boto3 is well established but the Rust SDK is new. The official release was about 8 months ago at reinvent. I’ve load tested both using K6. Why? Well, because I want to see for myself if I really do get the 8x improvement in performance and equivalent reduction in cost that people promote. What were the results? IGNORANCE IS NOT BLISS As we continue to build the foundations for SOFTWARE Australia, we've been talking with and learning from leaders and luminaries from many different backgrounds. A diverse perspective is important because software is no longer the domain of the IT department and a vertical slice of a business. It's ubiquitous and the notion of the citizen developer refuses to be quashed, with the grim spectre of AI driven shadow IT looming large. Tomorrow's software will solve very specific and highly nuanced problems both as a pure software solution or part of a physical hybrid offering. Generic platforms will make way for greater and greater detail and accuracy as technology creators target tighter niches and deliver far greater value.
