Yesterday evening wholesale electricity prices exceeded $4,000/MWh. Electric Kiwi had the good sense to advise their customers that supply was tight and curtailing their usage a good idea, only to be publically admonished by the grid operator saying there was no supply issue. Then how did prices get that high? Ironically earlier in the day we’ve had the Minister of Resources/Associate Minister of Energy on breakfast TV stating “electricity generators, do not see this as an opportunity to gouge and profiteer in the wholesale market”. So which is it, the grid operator is wrong and can’t identify a tight supply scenario, or do we have clear and irrefutable evidence of said price gouging? - 𝟲𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁 Hot and dry weather across the past week has tested both sheep and cattle markets. The gap between steers and heifers has started to trend down, using the Meat & Livestock Australia Yearling heifer and steer indicators, the gap has fallen from June (35%), July (27%), Aug (27%) and so far in Sept (26%). The last time the gap was below 20% was Feb-2023. Chris Howie has voiced the opportunity several times, highlighted in his article "Who bought heifers" on Beef Central in early Aug. Does that opportunity (either price uplift or simply herd upgrade) still remain? Further to this, producer confidence and/or eagerness to trade remains cautious. The gap between the MLA National Heavy Steer and Restocker Yearling steer indicators for the month of August was only 26c. To put this into context, in 2022 when the cattle market was roaring with a low cattle supply, great widespread season and strong prices; the gap across the whole year averaged at 176c. While in Oct-2023 the gap was actually in negative territory at -4c. See the graph below, coloured in Wallabies gold, in honour of their win last week Following on from last week and the US demand for Aust beef, comparing the EYCI and the US CME Feeder Cattle Index, the US index has traded over 100% premium over Australian cattle for all of 2024, currently for the week-ending 1st Sept there is a 115% premium over Australian cattle, clearly showing our cattle remaining competitive on a global scale. Sheep and lamb numbers have continued to flow into sales this week: 47k at Forbes, 36k at Dubbo, 67k at Wagga and 30k on AuctionsPlus. All lamb indicators on MLA have continued to trend upward, being 20-30c stronger across the last 4 weeks. No doubt, again underpinned by strong exports. Q1 (Jan-24 to Mar-24) has seen the largest Lamb exports to the US in the last 8 years. Making up 20Mt (22%) of total lamb exports. Go the Wallabies 🏉

Not good for continued investment…. Australia's liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports will drop this year, continuing a trend from last year after reaching a record high in 2022. That’s the projection of analysts at BMI, a Fitch Solutions company, in a report sent to Rigzone recently. The country’s LNG exports are estimated to fall to 3.425 trillion cubic feet (97 billion cubic meters) in 2024 after reaching a record high of 3.567 trillion cubic feet (101 billion cubic meters) in 2022, the analysts stated. #lng #oilandgas

The Oil and Gas Extraction industry is a significant economic contributor to Australia. The sector was valued at $130 billion in 2023, with gas accounting for 87% of this value. The industry has grown from primarily serving domestic demand to becoming the world's second-largest exporter of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The industry is vertically integrated and encompasses: 👉 Exploration, 👉 Extraction, 👉 Refining, 👉 Transportation. Based on our research, the data shows a decline in the workforce since 2018. Skills shortages are prevalent, with many required occupations overlapping the broader mining industry. A significant portion (47%) of the workforce requires at least a bachelor's degree, reflecting the specialised skills needed. It is disappointing to see the Australian government backing gas "to 2050 and beyond", and advocating for the development of further gas fields.    Yes, the #AEMO and #CSIRO see #gas being the cheapest way of firming the grid, for peak times when renewables and batteries are stretched. However, this will become an increasingly small part for the grid.    More importantly, with 80% of #methane currently being exported, why are we not keeping more in reserve for peak domestic demand? The industry will say there is too little supply in #Victoria and no infrastructure to move sufficient gas into the state. With us being able to export gas to #Korea and #Japan, this argument simply does not pass the pub test!   If this does go ahead, I would expect a whole host of restrictions and requirements to be in place:  ❌ #Methane has half the emissions of black coal, but only when burnt. If it leaks, then over a 20-year timeline, it is 80 times worse than CO2. There should be strict restrictions and penalties for leaks ❌ Carbon capture and storage has not operated effectively at scale anywhere in the world. If companies want to commit to this, it should be at their expense, not subsidised, and any shortfall of carbon capture, should lead to reduced gas production ❌ Exports may well be required to support the transition away from coal in other countries. Where that occurs, this should be consistent with that counties Paris-aligned transition plans   Without these and other protections, we are giving a green light to continued, unabated production that is sure to compromise global transition plans. #netzero #netzeroemissions #climatechange #sustainability #leadership #oilandgas Anthony Albanese Jim Chalmers Madeleine King Chris Bowen MP

I don’t often cross platform post; but this thread of tweets from Sam Berridge is an absolute must read for those that don’t understand the extraordinary tilting of the playing field towards renewables that has been happening with the current Australian energy policy settings. https://lnkd.in/gjbgYj8v At the same time as offering these extraordinary concessions; our government outright bans a technology that could quite possibly play a serious role in our energy landscape. And the only argument of the anti nuclear squad that might possibly seem to stick is that we’ve left it too late… and so because we’ve left it too late there is no point in lifting the ban now. Which is an extraordinarily poor and shallow argument. It would have been good to already have a civilian nuclear generation industry. But we’ve got a lot of other pieces of the puzzle and it’s never too late to get cracking! The Parliamentary Inquiry hearings into Nuclear Energy are well underway. I would urge everyone to view the recordings of the range of presentations given and decide for yourself which side seems to be more based on facts and science and which seems to be peddling in ideology and fear.

Meg O'Neill, CEO of ANGEA member company Woodside Energy, has told the Australian Energy Producers Conference in Perth about the strong need to keep investing in future gas projects in Australia. These projects will not only address concerns over domestic energy shortages but meet the demands of customers in Asia. Australia is a long-time supplier of LNG to Japan, South Korea and China, which rely on imported gas for energy security. **WA'S MORAL OBLIGATION TO HELP WORLD DECARBONISE REAFFIRMED BY WA GOVERNMENT - so why no URANIUM?*** 👏 👏 Thank you WA Energy Minister Reece Whitby; for recognising that "the State does have a duty to the rest of the world in attempting to tackle climate change." “Whatever WA can do to help the world decarbonise above and beyond our share of emissions, is something we just must do. If that means putting extra pressure on our emissions as a State, it’s our burden to shoulder for a greater reduction in global emissions." “Mining our iron ore, our lithium, all our critical minerals – and yes, our gas – help other economies decarbonise.” So this begs the question: What about our URANIUM? Exporting uranium is the single highest leverage activity Western Australia can do to help the world decarbonise. We have an industry here ready to fly - and provide diversified employment options to replace those jobs lost in nickel, lithium and iron ore. Ministers Whitby; David Michael and Premier Roger Cook KNOW its time to address this issue. ⏰ Lets take the politics out of this issue and make a change for the State that is common sense. ***IMPORTANT ENERGY TRANSITION COST DISCLOSURE*** Further to my post of yesterday on the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) ISP. #auspol So that everyone is crystal clear, to deliver the AEMO plan, ~>90% of all households are assumed to fork out about $15k each to buy a Tesla Powerall and then let the network use it (that is >$200bn). Similarly, they need to all go and buy an electric car ($30-50k minimum each?) and let the network use that as well? (i havent costed that one!) And then risk trying to drive to work in the morning and realise the network has used your the battery overnight? Not saying this tech can't work - it absolutely can. But its not perfectly synchronous (the model has been "overfit"); and these costs should be disclosed so we can all understand how much it will really cost. Now whilst this CER expenditure is carefully designed to be "out of scope", if AEMO were interested in transparency, they could easily provide these estimates so a more fulsome cost of the AEMO plan could be considered by the public. But they choose not to. Make up your own mind as to the reason for that. To assist, I have very quickly added in a graph showing what the present value of assumed Powerwall expenditure CER (not the cars) does to the AEMO's disclosed $121bn in capex. This is just ONE of the carefully designed "out of scope" costs. Is it still really the cheapest way?? If we had strong baseload generation (hydro, nuclear, geothermal) it is clear such volume of batteries would not be required.

(AUSTRALIA 23.11.24) Woolworths and Coles are emphasising the threat of Aldi — is it really a competitive force to be reckoned with? [AG: Coles and Woolworths - Pointing Fingers While Dodging Responsibility] At the ACCC inquiry, Woolworths and Coles framed Aldi as a key competitor, citing its low prices and unique offerings. ----- [AG: Ah, the drama of the ACCC inquiry. In a spectacle that feels more like a magician’s act than a corporate hearing, Coles and Woolworths once again master the art of misdirection, pointing fingers at everyone else - Aldi, Costco, Amazon and even Bunnings and Chemist Warehouse. Because, apparently, if you cry “competition” loud enough, people will forget you’re at the top of a cozy oligopoly. Let’s start with Coles CEO Leah Weckert’s groundbreaking revelation: “We consider (Aldi) a significant and credible competitor to us.” Oh, really? Stop the presses! Aldi has only been shaking up the Australian supermarket scene for two decades now. It’s old news, Leah, but thanks for the reminder. The reason Aldi is such a competitor? It’s simple. They don’t charge suppliers a rebate just for the privilege of stocking their shelves - a practice Coles and Woolworths have mastered. Aldi also operates with lean, efficient costs and no hungry shareholders demanding inflated returns. This allows them to deliver lower retail prices without squeezing their suppliers to the breaking point. Woolworths and Coles, meanwhile, have perfected the art of passing the price-war buck onto the very growers and suppliers who sustain their shelves. Ex-Woolworths CEO Brad Banducci chimed in with his own nugget of wisdom: “You want to be competitive against everyone.” Sure, Brad, that’s a cute soundbite. But when "everyone" includes a discount powerhouse like Aldi, which has operational costs you can only dream of, that’s more wishful thinking than strategy. Let’s be clear: Woolworths and Coles cannot compete with Aldi’s prices unless they’re willing to do what Aldi does. That means lowering their operational costs, accepting slimmer profit margins, and maybe - just maybe - stopping the practice of squeezing suppliers dry. Spoiler: they won’t. Why? Because maintaining their marked-up profits and appeasing shareholders trumps fair pricing or ethical supplier relationships. Coles and Woolworths keep dodging the real issue, tossing in names like Amazon and Costco to deflect. If they’re so worried about competition, here’s a thought: focus on value. Give shoppers a real reason to choose you - beyond squeezing suppliers to win price wars. Until Coles and Woolworths stop playing the blame game and start owning their role in the market, this inquiry will remain little more than a finger-pointing circus. And Aldi?
