Starting as of November 1st 2024 (Today), I will be taking the helm of overseeing the SUSE business for Australia and New Zealand. After having been at Denodo for 3.5 years, a leader in the Data Management market, I am now very pleased to join the SUSE team under the leadership of Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen, Arun Oberoi, Josep Garcia, Frank Feldmann, Werner Knoblich and the brilliant SUSE family both locally and internationally. I have been incredibly grateful for my time working at Denodo, building the team while helping organisations extract greater and greater value from their data in an ever complex and regulated world. One of the reasons I have made the move, is because according to Gartner, Cloud spending continues to exceed 20% YoY into the next few years, while the 2023 https://lnkd.in/gKp-Tkbt showed the average organisation was trying to manage ~3 CSP's. Gartner further states the demand by the business from Platform Engineering teams, by 2026 is to have a frictionless, self service, reusable experience to speed code into production securely. The business driven AI demand and systems co-dependencies we know are huge. With cloud native platforms underpinned by linux and containers, combined with integrating older systems that are dependent on successfully digitising processes and AI, I am of the view SUSE has a unique approach to create greater value in this highly challenging space. SUSE's long history of world class open source enterprise linux and more recently container management, have a differentiated approach to unify, standardise, support and secure across these platforms without forcing expensive migrations and re-engineering overhead. We had a blast at the AWS Cloud Days yesterday! A huge thank you to everyone who came out and to the AWS team for their outstanding support! Some highlights: 👉 Flying the Crayon and Parallo flag in the NZ market and building connections within the software development community across SaaS/ISV, Corporate and Enterprise customers. In a market where nearly every company is (or is becoming) a software company building B2B, B2C and internal apps or data solutions in the cloud, we have so much value to offer. 👉 Spending the day with the Amazon Web Services (AWS) team to deep dive into our new services designed to help companies optimise application performance, enhance end-user experience, deploy efficiently and innovate in the cloud. 👉 Celebrating the new Ai solutions our Crayon Data & Ai team deployed into production for customers in Australia and NZ. Moving from POC to Production is a big milestone for many companies, and a great opportunity to achieve the expected ROI. 👉 Speaking with the members of the dev community who got their job at the AWS Cloud Days last year. This helped me see the impact of the AWS investment and the difference it's making in the NZ economy.

The growth in cloud in Australia is helping grow our economy, aid innovation and deliver new capabilities. We need to ensure that government treads lightly when seeking to add regulation across the sector. The new report into the cloud sector looks at the cloud sector's contribution and the regulatory framework and risks and provides recommended approach.

What does being a CIO and mountain climbing have in common? I found out yesterday at the Factor CIO day in Sydney. Here is what I heard. On the rapid rise of AI "2 years ago, I thought we would never implement AI 1 year ago, I decided we would have to implement AI Today, I am being chased to implement AI" On AI, the view is pretty consistent, that AI isn't an outcome, its a human amplifier and the biggest concern raised was around the readiness of data. On working from home "We would lose 3/4 of my team if I mandated they came back to the office ". Measuring productivity is however still a challenge both for those in the office and working remotely. On business transformation "business transformation is a team sport" and how often we as leaders are underestimating how important change management is in the business. There was some great war stories on this. On consolidation of applications "we can't have the best of breed tools for everything in the organisation. Good enough is often good enough" On cyber "The threat surface is continuously increasing and the bad actors are better funded than ever." I also was involved in a roundtable discussion about streamlining costs (that's me presenting on behalf of the group in the photo) and we came up with 3 key areas for discussion 𝟭. Focus on where the costs can be saved but looking at the processes and not starting with the technology. Don't just automate a terrible process. Optimise them first. 𝟮. The cost impact of customisations to applications is still not fully appreciated and beware of trying to change the tool to meet your processes. The impacts of this can be long lasting when the changes block updates. 𝟯. Data-driven decisions are great, though it's hard to get the right data and be aware of biases towards areas with more data. An example of this is tool consolidation. You might save money by putting everyone on the same tool as you have great data on the cost savings, but not great data on the efficiency impact to the team. And finally, change in business is hard and takes lots of time. It's like climbing a mountain. Just make sure you are only trying to climb one mountain at a time. Great advice from Andy Luiskandl!
