We have recovered $223,107 for 447 underpaid food outlet employees on the Sunshine Coast, following surprise inspections. Our inspectors investigated 21 businesses in the Sunshine Coast’s fast food, restaurant and café sector, a mix of ‘high-end’ restaurants and ‘cheap eats’ venues. The inspections were prompted by intelligence from a range of sources, including anonymous reports. Of 19 investigations finalised, we found workplace law breaches in 68 per cent of food outlets (13 businesses). The highest amount recovered from any one business was $105,137 for 99 employees, mostly casual wait staff and kitchen staff and a mix of adults and juniors who were underpaid their overtime hours and penalty rates. Ever found yourself in a Coles or Woolies (now Endeavour) bottle shop and marvelled at the massive range of wine under $30? At Vino Cammino, precisely 0 bottles from our range retail under $30. We think much of the difference is driven by ownership. Thanks to an excellent resource maintained by The Real Review (link in comments), we know that that there are over 400 wine brands owned by supermarkets and other large corporate groups in Australia. Endeavour alone own 227. Coles have 84. And each of those brands have their own range of bottles, so it’s likely that thousands of bottles on big brand Australian bottle shop shelves are owned by a small handful of companies (but of course, you won’t read about it on the labels). So, how do you think those companies encourage (or make) decisions in the production of those wines? How would they prioritise cost, durability, and volume against sustainability, quality and complexity of flavour? Are they crafting a wine to offer the best expression of grape and place or something calculated at the last quarterly meeting of the finance, analytics and marketing teams? Of course, some nice wines are made at low price points. It's just hard to find them in a tidal wave of blandness disguised by clever labels. All of the wines at Vino Cammino have one owner: it’s the winemaker and their family. Hungry Jack's Franchisee Dispute - How close is too close? A NSW Hungry Jack's franchisee took Federal Court action to stop the franchisor from launching 2 new Hungry Jack's restaurants too close to its own stores in Cooranbong and Dora Creek. The franchisee claimed that HJ's opening those stores breached the restraint of trade clauses in the franchise agreements and section 6 of the Franchising Code (which requires that the parties act in good faith with each other). The parties settled the case on a confidential basis last Friday. Not having competitors in too close proximity is a fundamental part of what franchisees are paying for when they enter franchise agreements. How close is too close is usually set out in the franchise agreement. Australia is the most heavily franchised country in the world. I've often thought it is something to do with Australians’ get up and go mentality - so many people willing to start small businesses and work all hours to make them a success. Good franchising systems can be a fantastic way to start a small business with someone holding your hand through the process with tried & tested products and systems. Bad franchise systems can financially break you with little to no help along the way and just a take take take. The Star Sydney will retain its casino licence, with restrictions, following the outcome of an independent inquiry into The Star’s operations released earlier this year. The Star’s Sydney casino licence will, however, remain suspended until early 2025, and the casino operator will be required to pay a fine of $15 million. The casino will also continue to be overseen by a government-appointed manager until 31 March 2025. The results of the independent inquiry into The Star’s operations found that The Star was not suitable to be concerned in or associated with the management and operation of the Sydney casino. The inquiry was the second inquiry into The Star in recent years. The NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC) stated that the cancellation of The Star’s licence would have significant economic implications but that more work needed to be done by the operator before it could be considered to be a “compliant and responsible operator”. The NICC will continue to monitor The Star’s operations. We continue to engage constructively with the Commission.       This merger is the right thing – not the easy thing – to do. Proud to share this important moment for the Foodstuffs co-ops.     The grocer owner-operators of Foodstuffs North Island and Foodstuffs South Island have voted in support of becoming one nationwide co-op.     The vote means the merger can go ahead, subject to Commerce Commission and High Court approvals.    “New Zealanders want us to deliver more value and innovation. McDonald’s Australia has quietly increased prices on their most popular menu items. Iconic items like the Big Mac have jumped from $5.65 to $7.90, the Quarter Pounder priced at $5.65 has risen to $8, and a cheeseburger that used to cost $3.15 is now $4.95. These increases are even higher when ordering through delivery services like Uber Eats. What’s interesting is the shift in McDonald’s pricing strategy. Previously, they focused on raising prices for bundles and long-tail items, but now, the most popular items are seeing the biggest hikes. McDonald’s explains these increases by pointing to inflation and rising operating costs. They also highlight efforts to offer value through options like the $6.95 McSmart Meal and personalised deals through MyMacca’s loyalty program. However, with the price increases focused now on bestsellers, customers may feel the price changes more directly, leading to questions about whether these increases are fair. This move seems to be an attempt to capitalise on high-demand products, but it might also challenge customers’ perception of value.
