Western Sydney University will pioneer genetic advances for next generation orchards, as part of a $41 million five-year funded Hort Innovation project. They will focus on generating new knowledge on complex traits at a crop level, accelerating the development of new varieties of almond, apple, macadamia, citrus and mango for domestic and export markets. The collaborative project brings together plant genomics and molecular physiology research strengths from Western Sydney University, Queensland University of Technology, Murdoch University, and The University of Queensland along with collaborators such as the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (QDAF). Western’s node leader and plant molecular biologist Associate Professor Christopher Cazzonelli, from the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment, said the goal is to grow smaller trees with greater productivity and climate-proof their resilience by decoding the genetic underpinnings of key productivity traits. “To fast-forward the process of breeding new varieties suitable for the next gen orchards we intend to develop and integrate molecular markers into genomic selection models and use traditional breeding methods to revolutionise orchard management.” Building on more than five years of tree genomics research, the project aims to improve orchard production and develop new tree crop varieties with national levy and publicly funded breeding programs. We will address the challenge of flowering in crops including apple and almond that need a certain amount of cool exposure time, and intend to identify markers for selecting new varieties that flower by precision under diverse climates and hence can intensify yield production. QDAF project leader, Dr Natalie Dillon, said that "Horticultural production of mango is also still in its infancy in Australia and consumers prefer juicy, less fibrous fruits with vibrant orange hues and uniform colour which are marketable traits important for consumer appeal". The green-to-yellow to purplish-pink colouration of mango fruits can be altered by the tree crop environment. These colours are reflective of the accumulation of carotenoid and anthocyanin photoprotective pigments, nutritional metabolites that have superior antioxidant activity. We aim to discover the genetic processes and develop molecular markers for selecting cultivars that grow fruits desirable in appeal, texture, and nutrition, which provides economic benefits for growers. In 2021, we received funding from the Australian Dairy Park (ADP) and Western Sydney University under the Research Partnership Program (WSU initiative) to understand the therapeutic effects of one of ADP’s dairy formulations. We found that the formulation inhibited the infection of human #coronavirus 229E in lung fibroblast cells before and after simulated gastric #digestion and displayed potent #prebiotic, antibacterial, and inflammatory properties. While this research has helped our industry partner feel more confident about their product as a functional dairy formulation (based on the study's findings), the funding has enabled us to establish an accessible yet comprehensive platform at NICM Health Research Institute to investigate the #antiviral activity of food and natural products in great detail. So, it's a win-win for both! This platform can be used for high-throughput antimicrobial screening of natural and synthetic compounds/extracts. It will help our staff and students in conducting antimicrobial, especially antiviral research while creating more collaborative opportunities with the industry. Introducing Dr Sunil Panchal. A Senior Lecturer in Nutrition and Food Science at Western Sydney University, Sunil’s research focus is on valorisation of food waste and by-products for the isolation of nutraceuticals.   Sunil is currently the Project Leader on the #FFSCRC collaborative project ‘Characterisation of capsaicinoids from capsicums, chillies and greenhouse horticultural waste of these crops’, and is supervisor to FFS PhD student, Mursleen Yasin. 🌟 Daisy Lab: Pioneering Precision Fermentation in New Zealand 🌟 Since its conception in 2021, Daisy Lab has rapidly evolved from an ambitious idea to a fully functional production laboratory. Founded by a group of visionary female scientists 👩‍🔬, Daisy Lab leverages cutting-edge genetic engineering and business acumen to revolutionize the food technology landscape in New Zealand. In May 2024, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) granted Daisy Lab approval to scale up production 500-fold 🚀, a critical milestone in our journey. As Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer Nikki Freed explained in an interview with RNZ, "Precision fermentation has been used for centuries in food products like rennet for cheese 🧀, vanilla flavoring, stevia 🍬, and insulin. What's new is using it for proteins traditionally found in milk, such as whey, casein, and lactoferrin." 🥛 At the heart of our innovative process are Infors-HT bioreactors 🔬, essential for our yeast fermentation in producing animal-free milk proteins. We began our journey by borrowing two Infors-HT Multifors instruments from an academic group. Later, we acquired the award-winning Minifors-2 bioreactor from In Vitro Technologies, which has been instrumental in automating and documenting our bio-processes 📊. This "small-but-mighty" bioreactor, alongside the Multifors, has been a powerhouse in our lab, driving our fermentation and protein production efforts. ⚡ With the new EPA approval, we are poised to upscale to large stainless-steel bioreactors for protein production and purification, aiming to supply dried proteins to dairy and dairy-product manufacturers. 🏭 A proud moment for Daisy Lab was when our Co-founder, Emily McIsaac, was honored with the $30,000 Supreme Winner of the North Harbour Club Innovation Award 🏆. Food safety assurance for our red meat exports adds $millions  New Zealand's red meat exports, valued at over $10 billion, are the country's second-largest earner, driven by a reputation for exceptional food safety. This reputation has been maintained through ongoing research, spearheaded by Dr. Gale Brightwell, Associate Director of NZFSSRC and Principal Scientist at AgResearch. For the past 20 years, Dr. Brightwell and her team have developed innovative technologies and interventions to extend the shelf life of chilled meats bound for Europe and reduce contamination risks from harmful E. coli strains like STEC. This work has also fostered the development of a new generation of scientists, skilled in advanced technologies and commercialisation. Emerging leaders like Amanda, Delphine, Rose, and Tanu are already making significant contributions, reflecting the future of food safety innovation. A recent study assessing the reproductive capacity of mussels grown in hatcheries found that homeopathy significantly improved the quality and production of sex cells. This was achieved by increasing energy storage in all tissues of the mussels, but especially in the gonads where sexual maturation was enhanced. 🚨 Breakthrough in the Fight Against Chemically Resistant Dieback! 🚨 Our researchers have uncovered new insights into how phosphite combats dieback, offering hope for growers of avocados, stone fruits, and pines 🥑 🌿 Recent CCDM PhD graduate, Christina Andronis and her team discovered that phosphite works in three ways: inhibiting pathogen growth, boosting plant defenses, and enhancing photosynthesis 🌞 🌱 CCDM and Proteomics International teams will use these findings to develop a rapid detection tool to help limit the spread of dieback caused by the pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi, which threatens the horticultural industry and native flora.
