Finally some amazing research on the value of the Live Performance industry in New Zealand. Here are the key stats: (1) For every dollar spent on live performance, $3.20 is returned in benefits to the wider community. (2) The economic and social contributions of live performance is $17.3 billion in the 12 months ending 30 June 2024. (3) 2.3 million people over the age of 15 attended live performance events in NZ between July 2023 and June 2024. (4) Live Performance supports the creation of 60,500 full-time roles in NZ. (5) Live Performance attendees report their wellbeing to be 7.6% higher than those who hadn't attended in the last 12 months. Plus loads more. Cash on offer for regional Victorian meetings Up to $40,000 is being offered for planners to book meetings in regional Victoria. The funding is part of the Regional Business Events Program, delivered by Business Events Victoria in partnership with Melbourne Convention Bureau. The program supports national and international businesses to host events in regional Victoria including conferences, trade exhibitions, seminars and corporate meetings. The program offers grants of up to $80 per delegate (up to a maximum of $40,000) for eligible event organisers to host new business events yet to be booked in regional Victoria. Another scheme to attract international incentives has also been announced by Business Events Victoria. The International Incentive Event Program is offering planners up to $150 per delegate for new international incentive programs that are yet to be booked if they include an overnight stay in regional Victoria. For both programs funding can potentially be utilised by event organisers to offset accommodation, venue hire, food and beverage, and transport. Business Events Victoria (BEV) executive officer, Adeline Keh, said the focus of BEV is to attract national conferences to regional destinations across the state that align with key regional industries. “This funding will go a long way to further encourage and support these important events for Victoria, strengthening business prospects across communities throughout the state,” she said. “Through the previous rounds of support, 55 business events received funding, delivering $13.23m to date to local communities." South Australia’s multi-million-dollar cruise industry has delivered a record-breaking economic impact during the 2023-24 season surpassing the 2022-23 cruise season, which injected $215 million into South Australia’s economy and supported 704 jobs. The Economic Impact Assessment of Cruise Tourism in Australia 2023-24 jointly commissioned by Cruise Lines International Association and the Australian Cruise Association shows the 2023-2024 cruise season injected a record high $227 million into South Australia’s economy and supported 738 jobs. What we love about cruise is that it brings visitors from across the world directly to our stunning coastal towns, from Penneshaw to Port Lincoln. It also means South Australia is now top of mind as a desired destination for the more than 208,000 passengers and crew who visited over the season. A total of 119 cruise and expedition ship visits are scheduled for the 2024-25 season, bringing an estimated more than 241,000 passengers and crew to South Australian shores.   More than 20 first-time voyages are currently scheduled, including luxury cruise lines bringing in high yield visitors to the state, such as MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Hapag Lloyd Cruises. While I acknowledge there are some challenges ahead for future cruise seasons as a sector nationally, our objectives remain on growing the number and range of cruise lines and ships adding South Australia to their itineraries and bringing high-yield visitors to our shores.

On the back of the Federal Budget, the Northern Territory government has announced a significant increase in capacity of the Darwin Convention Centre, allocating $19.2 million to the project. The investment will expand the capacity of the Darwin Convention Centre by 4350 seats, taking total capacity to 5550. Upgrades will also include improvements to public amenities and AV equipment. Following the announcement Darwin Convention Centre general manager, Peter Savoff, said this was an exciting opportunity “because it will add to the versatility of our venue and allow us to cater to a wider range of events throughout the year.” NT Chief Minister, Eva Lawler, said tourism and major events are key pillars of the Territory’s economy which is why the government is backing projects that support growth in these industries. “We’re boosting the capacity of the Darwin Convention Centre because we need the facilities to be able to bring bigger and better events to the Territory – because that means more work opportunities for Territorians,” she said. This announcement follows plans to improve the entire waterfront precinct where the convention centre is located, with the government recently signing a development agreement with Singapore hotel developers CEL to build a Darwin Convention Centre hotel. The 236 bed hotel is a key part of the masterplan to redevelop the waterfront into one of Australia’s leading integrated lifestyle and tourism destinations. In other NT budget announcements, the Lawler Government demonstrated its commitment to the tourism and events sector, announcing $68 million for tourism and $41 million for NT Major Events, with a $4 million boost to continue to deliver world class major events and attract new events to add to the Territory calendar. No time-line has been given on expansion of the Darwin Convention Centre or construction of the new waterfront hotel.

Seymour is presented with the evidence, "he is either so stupid that he doesn't understand it, or more likely, he is deliberately ignoring and misrepresenting the 50 years of work we have collectively done." Seymour said: "Willie can attack me all he likes. What he can't do is articulate why he is so opposed to New Zealanders getting a say on whether the Treaty means every New Zealander is equal before the law. The challenge for people who oppose this bill is to explain why they are so opposed to those basic principles My take: The treaty was agreed upon and signed by two people:  1. The Crown - representing everybody other than Māori  2. Māori - representing the first nation people.  The purpose was to unite "equally' the two together as one nation, not one suppressing the other, but equal in all things. Unfortunately, this did not occur as one partner to the treaty (Maori) where severely disadvantaged and hugely mistreated. This led to oppression and eventually assimilation. Māori almost lost everything in what is now perceived to be a purposeful slow methodical strategy of institutional genocide. The effects of this action was to have a continuous adverse effect on generations to follow. For this nation to move forward in what Seymour calls ‘equality’, it must first repair the damage done to its equal partner, restore the equal partner’s tūnga  (status, position) as kāwanatanga, (governorship) and  kaitiakitanga (Guardianship /  management ) over this nation, it’s respective resources culture and people…and THEN, we can move forward in applying the constitutional treaty of this nation in equality to ALL New Zealanders.  What will never change is that we are ONE nation TWO people MANY cultures.

The review of the Visitor Economy Strategy released today highlights the enormous opportunity for growth in our state's tourism industry. 📈 The review dares us to dream big, so we are. We're setting an ambitious new goal for the NSW visitor economy to become a $91 billion powerhouse by 2035. This is within reach thanks to an increase in our aviation capacity along with our incredible built and natural assets, our diverse cultural scene and our unique First Nations stories. The review emphasises the importance of experience-led tourism. Visitors want authentic, memorable moments that connect them with our local culture, natural landscapes, and people. Whether it's shucking oysters in Narooma, exploring our national parks, enjoying a night out in Enmore or visiting one of Western Sydney’s cultural food hotspots like Cabramatta or Harris Park, NSW has it all. I'm particularly excited about showcasing our sunrise culture, where wellness and fitness meet our incredible beaches, parks and cafes. To reach our target, we need to boost our capacity. The review highlights the need to build 40,000 hotel rooms and attract and train up to 150,000 additional workers to reach the 2035 goal. Leading figures in the International Education and Training (IET) sector met in Cairns last week to discuss the vital role international education plays in growing the local economy and adding to the vibrancy of the region. There is also a strong relationship between IET and tourism, with education being the second largest source of overnight visitor expenditure statewide in 2023 of $1.5 billion. The top home countries for students in Cairns as at YTD October 2023 are Japan, India, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and Colombia.

Good news for regional New Zealand. And a tough call for producers of glossy brochures! Today at the LGNZ Conference in Wellington, Local Government Minister Simeon Brown outlined the government’s Regional Deals framework. Of note: ------------------------ - Up to five regions will be invited to submit “light touch” proposals this year. No region is being ruled in or out at this stage but the focus will be on places with existing or potential opportunity for significant economic growth. - “We don't want extravagant, glossy documents developed by consultants: we're looking for simple in-house proposals." - Deals will be concluded with selected regions through a three-step process; an expression of interest letter from his office, a MoU, and development of a framework covering the structural aspects of the deal including governance, accountability, and detailing exactly what government support is needed. - He wants to finalise the first deal by the end of 2025.
