In the wake of recent events, the importance of robust data backup and replication strategies cannot be overstated. It's crucial to foresee worst-case scenarios and fortify your business against them. Unfortunately, even with cross-region replication and backup measures in place, vulnerabilities emerged, as evidenced by recent incident. Investing in third-party providers for regular backups is a smart move, serving as a lifeline during unforeseen crises like the recent May Day events. However, the question arises: why did immutable storage solutions, typically relied upon by cloud providers to safeguard data integrity, fail to prevent data loss and subscription deletion on Google Cloud? Normally, Cloud providers utilize immutable storage solutions that prevent data from being modified or deleted for a specified retention period, providing an additional layer of protection against accidental deletions. Why was not this a case for Google cloud and data was also deleted along with subscription? This underscores the necessity of diversifying backup strategies, including leveraging traditional offline storage options. When entrusted with managing substantial funds like a $125bn investor's portfolio, reliance solely on cloud providers becomes untenable. Dreadful. Wake up call for all those BCP and risk professionals! No matter how mature you think your CSP process controls are such failures can still happen in some other form or shape in the future. Lesson is to always keep backup images for your crown jewels external to your provider and conduct DR exercises.

Extermely rare but possible nightmare that happened with one of the Google cloud customer. No amount of data protection patterns and controls can save you from this kind of catastrophe. I can only imagine the kind of pressure both Google and Unisuper team might have experienced during this incident. Only thing that is a saviour for Unisuper is multi cloud setup. Sounds like an internal primary or secondary index 'skew' between different systems (or just a bug). Can happen when restoring records to a database in live use when changing a schema, as the precise order that sets the foreign key mappings used by the other system will not match... This might even be a stale cache somewhere.. Hence why you should always use synthetic keys when maintaining a relationship between two distinct databases, never use internal primary or secondary keys, just asking for trouble... #databreach #australia #databases #integrity
