In Australia—and even more so in Queensland—the tech industry is small and people talk. When hiring, it isn’t just about finding the right person, it’s also an opportunity to leave a good impression on candidates, whether they’re successful or not. Why? People talk. A smooth process enhances your brand, while a poor experience can spread quickly, especially in niche industries. Engagement. A positive experience keeps candidates excited about the role, making them more likely to accept offers. Retention: First impressions count. Candidates who feel valued are more likely to stay engaged and committed once hired. So as someone in a hiring position (hiring managers or recruiters), how do you provide a good candidate experience during the Interview process? • Clear Communication: Keep candidates informed at every stage.  • Timeframes: Respect candidates' time with quick feedback.  • Feedback: Provide constructive information, even if they don’t get the role - it leaves the door open for future opportunities & potentially helps them with other Interview processes that they are in. NetSuite Market Update 🔎 Some observations I've made over the last few weeks of June... (My entire focus is NetSuite Finance & IT recruitment across ANZ, so keep that in mind) 1. Contract roles are HOT this time of year as new budgets haven't yet been released. The number of people going into contracting has also increased. 2. WFH flexibility continues to be the number 1 (aside from 💰) priority of job seekers 3. Salaries have stabilised since the ups & downs of COVID. Government IT Contractors, are you drowning in the 'sea of sameness'?   A thought-provoking (AND VERY CURRENT) piece by Cristina Criddle in the Australian Financial Review highlights a critical issue in today's hiring landscape:   AI-driven tools are generating a 'sea of sameness’ in job applications.   With AI increasingly being used to draft resumes and cover letters, Criddle asserts that candidates are at risk of losing their unique voices, and companies may miss out on diverse talent.   The takeaway?    While AI can enhance efficiency, Criddle recommends maintaining authenticity and personal touch in applications. She encourages candidates to use AI as an aid, not a replacement, for their unique experiences and perspectives.   And so do I!   Here's my view:    I review hundreds of technology candidate resumes and applications per week, and this trend is SUPER evident.    Recently, I shortlisted 3 candidates for one role.   At the time of application review, I proofread all three.   All three, with nearly the EXACT same response to criteria.   All three were structured exactly the same, all three often with the same sentences generated by AI.    I recognise the value AI brings in automating tasks and boosting productivity, but when it comes to representing your personal brand to prospective employers, nothing replaces the power of your authentic voice.   Think about your resume and application as your own personal marketing material.   If the first impression a hiring manager has of you, your skills, and your capabilities.   Imagine trying to interpret someone's abilities when they look exactly the same as the next person.    My recommendation to you?   By all means, leverage AI for support and to increase productivity, but always ensure your resume and application genuinely reflect your experience and your tone of voice.    How do you balance AI efficiency while maintaining originality in your work? Our very latest DFP Technology & Project Job Index that provides data specific to technical and project management specialists throughout Australia will be released this week - with a fresh new look! The report provides an overview of the changes in Technical and Project hiring demand and breaks down information to cover each industry sector, including Professional & Technical, Government, Healthcare, Financial & Insurance Services, Manufacturing & Distribution and Mining & Utilities. Data covers Permanent and Contract roles, a variety of Occupational Groups and provides a State based breakdown. Job demand across the sector declined 5.9% over the most recent quarter. Nationally, all states struggled, however the ACT recorded an 8.8% increase. Conversely NSW fell 8.8% and Victoria recorded the steepest fall once again, contracting by 11.1%. We analyse various occupational groups and vacancies fell sharply for Project Engineers, down 13.9% and Project Administrators also fell 9.2%. There was some better news for several Analyst job categories, including Business Intelligence Analysts and Systems Analysts. 🤖 AI in Recruitment 👩‍💻 Last week, APSCo Australia and Bullhorn hosted a group of APSCo Members at NSW Parliament House, where we heard from Bill Simpson-Young of the Select Advisory Committee on AI regulation for Australia, followed by an illuminating fireside chat between Bill and Bullhorn's Regional VP, APAC Aaron McIntosh. Bill informed us there are so many constant advancements in AI, he listens to a DAILY podcast to keep up to date 🤯 Some of the points I took from the session: 🌟 AI 'workers' are already here covering certain types of work, and will be widely used in the not-so-distant future. For recruitment companies, clients may soon have the option to hire an 'AI employee' or a human! 🌟 AI is designed to please us, it's up to us to ensure AI is acting truthfully and ethically. AI supervision will become part of people's job roles as our use of it expands. 🌟 The impact of AI on business will far exceed the impact from new regulation. 🌟 The pace of change is so rapid, it's difficult to predict how things look even a couple of years from now. 🌟 Love AI or loathe it, use it or get left behind! Those who don't adopt AI into their work practices will not be able to keep up with those performing the same role supported by AI - it makes us way more productive.

Exciting Insights into the Software Engineering Landscape across Australia! Did you know that software engineers are playing a crucial role in driving innovation and growth across various regions in Australia? Here's a breakdown of software engineering employment compared to all occupations in different states and territories: Let's delve into the numbers: 🔹 NSW leads the pack with 41.7% of software engineering employment, surpassing the 31.6% average across all occupations. 🔹 VIC follows closely behind at 30.1%, outstripping the 25.6% average across all occupations. 🔹 QLD holds a respectable 12.4% share, despite falling below the 20.0% average across all occupations. 🔹 SA demonstrates potential with 5.1% employment in software engineering, just shy of the 7.0% average across all occupations. 🔹 WA showcases its tech growth with 5.9% in software engineering, although it's below the 10.8% average across all occupations. 🔹 TAS exhibits promise with 0.6% in software engineering, though it's a smaller share compared to the 2.0% average across all occupations. 🔹 NT and ACT show room for growth, with 0.2% and 4.0% respectively in software engineering employment, both surpassing their corresponding averages across all occupations.
