I was pleased to see Health Minister Shane Reti saying digital health has a critical role in the future of New Zealand's healthcare system, with the potential to improve health outcomes whilst increasing efficiencies, so there is a better utilisation of existing resources. 🔄 Time for Healthcare Equipment Providers to Evolve or Face Their "Kodak Moment" The Australian aged care sector is undergoing a massive $5.6 billion transformation, with significant reforms rolling out from July 2025. Yet, many traditional healthcare equipment providers remain focused solely on selling furniture, beds, and consumables. This reminds me of two cautionary tales: Kodak's Downfall: Kodak dominated photography but needed to adapt to digital transformation. Clinging to the traditional film business while competitors innovated, its corporate culture bred complacency and struggled to pivot from its legacy business model. Blockbuster's Demise: Similarly, Blockbuster stuck to its traditional rental model, rejected Netflix's partnership offer and needed to recognise changing consumer preferences. When they attempted to adapt, it was too late. Why Healthcare Equipment Providers Should Pay Attention: - Market data shows residential aged care providers decreasing by 5.2% in FY23 - 70% of providers are concerned about supporting a growing aging population - The future clearly points toward home care, with a 20% growth in Home Care Packages just last year The Path Forward: Instead of panic-driven technology adoption, providers need to: 1. Strategically develop SaaS and technology services 2. Create viable hybrid portfolios combining traditional products with innovative solutions 3. Oh, “lightning-fast” NBN internet for Australia, is FINALLY here to take us to...what, 2010 speeds? After a decade of empty promises & $$ billions thrown around, we’re supposed to cheer now? Yeah, let’s all clap because they've managed to reach nine million properties, probably leaving out rural areas where they think kangaroos are a greater concern than connectivity. & they call it "simple to set up"—right, until you need to call the support line &] end up on hold for longer than it takes to download a 4K movie on this "lightning" network. But here’s the real kicker: they hike up the prices as if they’re offering a first-class ticket to the digital age, while the rest of the world just walks on by. Want to upload a video or do a Zoom call without freezing like a pixelated ghost? That'll be $100 a month, thank you. & let’s be real, “supercharge” sounds grand until you realize it's just putting a turbo on a tricycle, going nowhere fast. So, what’s next? Another ten years until everyone has access to this so-called “lightning”? Or maybe by then, they’ll launch “super-duper lightning,” & it’ll cost double. Is your data ready to ensure the success of the implementation of your new system? As high as 70-80% of system implementations fail, and of this, it has been cited that as high as 30% of the data in the system once launched is incorrect. In the countless system implementations I have been part of, I always start with “how confident are you on the quality of the data going into the new system, and what is your data preparation plan?”. We are currently working with a client who is moving from outsourcing to insourcing various assets, and is looking for a system to manage the assets once insourced. The challenge they have is the data going into the system is manually constructed in Excel, and lacks governance to ensure it is correct, accurate and timely. If not addressed, this lack of data quality issues will hinder the system implementation, provide inaccurate reports and may also put the insourcing strategy at risk. Prior to any new system implementation, it is critical you ensure your data is secure and fit-for-purpose, and to ensure your processes are documented and optimised. Only then, will you be able to truly realise the envisioned ROI. In addition to data quality, it is also critical businesses understand what data is being captured, where the data is being held and how it is stored to ensure they are meeting regulatory requirements. Rural, regional, and remote Australians have another way to give feedback on telecommunications issues with the release of the first ever Regional Telecommunications Review survey. The Review, which takes place every three years, sees the Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee examine the experiences of people in regional, rural, and remote parts of Australia with telecommunications delivery, as well as considering the unique needs of First Nations communities. Previous Reviews have seen a number of major initiatives announced and delivered, such as the Mobile Black Spot Program and the National Audit of Mobile Coverage.
