At Monash Business School, we are engaged with a range of #forpurposeorganisations to help them understand, measure and communicate the #impact of their programs and activities on beneficiaries and clients. Our #impactmeasurement work involves us going into the field, into these #forpurposeorganisations to understand their purpose, strategy and operations and to develop knowledge on how they create #value and #impact for their beneficiaries and clients. As research academics, we bring deep #theoretical and #practicalknowledge and understanding to our impact research programs and work collaboratively with #forpurposeorganisations. Our research has been globally awarded and recognised and is distinct from #consulting as we approach our #impactmeasurement work as research projects governed by university #ethicsprotocols. As academics, we don’t charge out for our time but only seek to cover direct costs incurred in research projects. An example of our research work is the long term research collaboration with The One Box, an innovative food relief charity based in Melbourne that provides fresh food boxes to families with primary aged children through schools. Our research has helped to develop an #impactmeasurementframework called the Beneficiary Outcome Scorecard (BOS) which The One Box has used (1) to evaluate their food relief program and its benefits and (2) to collaborate with philanthropy foundations to raise funds to support their program. Our research is helping The One Box to understand how their program is helping families facing food insecurity to connect with the school community to access additional support services (e.g., domestic violence support), to improve their mental and physical wellbeing and to improve their children’s learning and development. Our research is helping The One Box to help reduce food insecurity, hunger and poverty amongst Australian families including refugees and migrants. As a former international student, I understand firsthand the sacrifices made to pursue education abroad. Many of us sell land, borrow money, or incur significant debt to chase our dreams. Despite these challenges, the pursuit of quality education and meaningful post-study employment opportunities drives us. That's why initiatives to protect international students' interests and bridge gaps are crucial. Collecting data through surveys and using it to inform policy is essential to ensure that international education meets our expectations and students know what they get for the investment and sacrifices they make. International students contribute significantly to the economy and should be valued and supported, not seen merely as revenue sources. It's imperative that we provide them with the best education and opportunities for professional growth (internships, post-study employment, world class career development counselling, world class extracurricular programs). I, along with many hardworking individuals I've known since enrolling in an Australian public university in 2008 (wow, it's been 16 years), and paying full international tuition fees for postgraduate courses, envision a future where governments and universities collaborate to showcase their best efforts and dedication to student success and satisfaction. International students are invaluable assets, and their experiences should reflect the highest standards we can offer. It's a moral obligation to advocate for international students. Details below. Given the current conjuncture, this symposium aims to move beyond timid framings of diversity that have not worked for media practitioners or scholars, and therefore calls for ‘divesting from diversity’.   This pre-conference event takes a transnational approach to framing diversity debates in the media, how these are limiting (and limited), and what decolonial and anti-colonial alternatives could look like. How might we divest from the diversity paradigm, and what might take its place? Where are alternatives to be found, and/or how might they be built? Sexual harassment is happening every day in the #retail sector, with young women bearing the brunt of it. Researchers from the University of Sydney's Centre for Gender Equality and Inclusion @ Work have published a new report that investigates the prevalence of harassment and what can be done to protect staff – especially the thousands of young people working in retail. An insightful brainstorm! It makes great reading. As an applied linguist the research our discipline reports on in addtional language learning, applicable feedback and fair assessment feeds straight back into our classrooms by necessity. We would ignore findings at our peril. Without our inextricable research/teaching nexus we might still be at the learn and repeat parrot like stage… but even AI does better than this offering endless interaction opportunities we can harness. Perhaps it remains a little known fact that language learning/teaching and feedback/assessing has a solid bedrock of science behind and ahead of it in order for intercultural communication to remain a human to human endeavour. We are cutting edge and proud!

"The Australian Emulation Network: Born Digital Cultural Collections Access. This project aims to conserve and render born digital artefacts widely accessible by establishing an Australian Emulation Network. High value cultural collections from university archives and the GLAM sector requiring legacy computer environments will be targeted. The project expects to generate new knowledge across media arts, design, and architecture. We’ve been thinking a lot of late at Macquarie University about how we cooperate, coordinate and collaborate successfully across disciplinary boundaries to address large-scale societal problems. Of course, we’re not alone in seeking consilience or emergence in our research endeavours. But how best to do this? It’s no mean feat to develop and deploy shared, interdisciplinary languages and understandings. Andrew Hoskins and I, as founding Co-Editors of the journal Memory, Mind and Media, wrote about this challenge in an editorial last year, after interviewing 20 successful interdisciplinary researchers. Within and beyond our domain of memory studies, we suggested that sharing methods is one powerful starting point: “One approach to filling interdisciplinary gaps is by sharing our models, methods and techniques … of the interdisciplinary researchers we interviewed, the vast majority described applying models, methods and techniques developed in one discipline to problems identified in another. This cross-fertilisation at the methodological level was experienced as a lower risk entry point to interdisciplinarity than attempting to apply entirely new conceptual approaches across disciplinary boundaries.” We also wrote about rewarding risky effort, irrespective of success, as well as Donald T. Campbell’s “fish-scale model of omniscience”. How is the rapidly increasing prevalence of AI-enabled edtech in Australian schools likely to impact educational equity? How could it help or make things worse and importantly, what can we do to tip the balance? At a time when Australia is grappling with how to improve the educational outcomes of all students, especially those from equity groups - such as First Nations students, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and those living in regional, rural and remote areas - this report provides new thinking and clearly articulates the opportunities and risks for equity of edtech and AI.

International Student Enrolments – Facts, Trends and Concerns An analysis of the trends in international student enrolments since 2005 to 2023 highlight the entrepreneurial success of Australian universities. They have become proportionally less reliant in Federal Government funding and have made a major contribution inter alia to the economy and regional international relations. The quantitative details are analysed in a paper available here https://lnkd.in/gsETTFRY. Students from more than 200 countries/economies are currently studying in Australia generating direct fee income of near $10 billion annually with a significant multiplier effect from living in the community through accommodation, travel, food and social expenditures. Five Group of Eight (Go8) universities are among the six Australian universities with the highest onshore and offshore student enrolment. RMIT is the other university in the top six. Those six universities account for around 35% of all overseas enrolment. The country enrolment profile is dominated by China and India as they provide some 61% of all overseas students highlighting the vulnerability of Australian universities to political and economic instabilities. Furthermore, the fact that over the past two decades enrolment from Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan have all declined is profiled. This is serious. The imposition of a 2025 Cap on international student enrolments will not arrest this decline from countries that should be our strategic regional partners. Three of the six universities with the highest enrolments are Sydney, Melbourne and UNSW. Relative to 2023, the cap will impose a reduction of 3,165 students on these universities so they will experience a revenue shortfall of at least $160 million p.a. The 15 universities assigned a reduced cap for 2025 will have 8,304 fewer students than the 2023 figures at a combined revenue loss of near $415 million. These figures do not include loss of increased revenue from growth that was expected for 2024 and 2025. The concern that several of the regional universities with an increased 2025 cap are unlikely to reach their targets is discussed. The caps are expected to impact on the global rankings of our research-intensive universities. The paper contains the details. Australia has so much untapped potential: we have a well-educated and skilled population, world-class universities, and stable institutions. But we just aren't making the most of it. I commented last year on how we were 93rd out of a global 133 in the Economic Complexity Index (one possible measure of a country's economic resilience). Well, now we've fallen to 102nd. We're projected to be in the bottom 15% of global growth in the next five years. For context, that puts us below Burkina Faso and Bangladesh... I'm not sure we're punching our weight. Y'all, we have got to do more than dig things up out of the ground. R&D is critical to getting new knowledge into society where it can be used to benefit our economy, environment, and people. And just for the record: R&D isn't just for elites. R&D helps people who want to live in houses that are affordable, it helps people who get sick, it helps people who drive on roads, it helps people who breath air... genuinely, it's for all of us. Seriously considering how we can make the most of the existing advantages we have--and cultivate new ones--is going to be critical to Australia thriving in the years and decades to come. #research #innovation #phd #RandD #resilience #economy #sustainability #knowledgeeconomy

Six Australian Universities have more than 70 percent Female Domestic Enrolees The latest available census data (2022) for domestic enrolments in universities show that more than 60% of enrolees are females. The strong participation by women is important. However, given that the domestic population mix is close to 50% males and 50% females Australia is missing the opportunity to tap in greater depth a critical intellectual skills resource because fewer males are engaged. In 2022 there were 227 thousand more females than males in our universities. Only two universities UNSW (55%) and RMIT (52%) have males as more than 50% of their domestic enrolees. Nineteen of 44 universities have male enrolments in the range 40% to 50%, while some 17 universities in the range 30% to 40% and six with less than 30%. Female students dominate the campuses of Torrens 78%, Carnegie Mellon (77%), Charles Darwin (75%), Australian Catholic University (74%), Notre Dame (72%) and Southern Cross (71%). As campus protests continue worldwide, so does an intense debate about free speech. Today, I wrote in The Australian about the need for university protests to meet a balance of free speech and safety. At the University of Sydney, we have been clear. Our overriding priorities are to ensure the safety of our community, ensure our campus remains peaceful and respectful, and that university activities continue uninterrupted. In line with our Charter of Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom, we recognise peaceful protest is a legitimate expression of free speech. Political speech can be deeply uncomfortable – but we will not tolerate it crossing over into racism, threats to safety, hate speech, intimidation, bullying or unlawful harassment on our campuses.
