It's been almost a year since completing my Masters of Design Futures at RMIT and my project on creating trauma-informed design organisations. Since this time, I've often been asked to share resources to support people on their journey to becoming trauma-informed in their design practice (or perhaps why this is something they may like to consider).   I had started to pull together a library of resources, and then to my delight, discovered one already existed, alongside a community of practioners who meet monthly to reflect on and discuss practice. This website and collection of resources is maintained by the volunteer organizers of the Trauma Informed Design Discussion Group. The Project Gutenberg eBook of Erewhon, by Samuel Butler was written in 1872 (152 years ago). This fascinating critique/satire of Victorian society speaks of a fictional place where machines have evolved according to Darwin's theory of evolution albeit at a much more rapid pace, thus getting conscious and surpassing humans in most ways. This of course was very fictional nearly a century and a half ago, but it occurs to me that this sort of a scenario is not entirely beyond the realm of possibility today (Especially considering the mostly unregulated field of AI in our times).    I got through this book last week but continue to think about the human tendency to overlook and/or underestimate long-term risks in favor of short-term gains. I believe this tendency is also called cognitive bias, specifically "temporal discounting" or "present bias." We prioritize immediate rewards over future consequences, even when the consequences could very well be existential. https://lnkd.in/ejzVUXPK

I'd like to draw attention to this article. Not about the $ spent, but about the Tuhi app. SUPER proud of the amazing work done by the good people in my team 🙌 🙌 They are ABSOLUTE unicorns 🦄 This "tiny team" is also rolling out remote patient monitoring in rural communities. Supporting the rollout of innovative high-sensitivity troponin tests in emergency departments to help reduce length of stay. With rural communities to be next. This "tiny team" supports testing of new ideas and innovation cheaply, efficiently, collaboratively. Allowing our health colleagues to do what they do best - better health outcomes for Aotearoa. I'd also like to offer an amendment to the Te Whatu Ora statement at the end of the article. Yet, what evidence is there to suggest that the smart city can provide genuine answers to the climate emergency and the prospect of a planetary ecocide? While the smart city agenda has started to move beyond the technology and data hype and come to terms with social and environmental issues, the challenges are vast. Climate change already has a great impact on cities with a notable increase in adverse weather events and insurance and rebuilding costs, and some thought leaders actively seek to reconcile the smart city with the resilient city. This talk ponders the question whether the human-centric focus is in fact worth rethinking in order to imagine the post-anthropocentric city in ‘more-than-human futures.’ With society’s current limited perspective that centres around humans, we risk to forget how we are entangled with and connected to other living beings, the environment, and the wider ecosystem that keeps us alive. I'm a fan of effective communications materials (this is) and passionate community self help/self determination initiatives(this is). My own version of 'progressivism' has always sought a prominent position for self-organisation and grass roots empowerment not just statism and centralised welfarism. Providing people with the fishing rod not just the fish and all that. I think we can learn lots as a society - and as 'progressives' -from this kind of thinking. I remember when I was an advisor in the Blair government going along to a preso by a leader of Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc. (CPLC) about how a modest self-help initiative in the Mexican-American community had led to the emergence of in just a few decades a multi-billion dollar outfit helping the community get housing, jobs, training and better lives. Big fan of such stuff here and internationally. https://cplc.org/about ('CPLC began with a group of student and community activists who pushed back against racial discrimination. Today, we are one of the largest Latino nonprofits in the country, providing services to people of all backgrounds while honoring our Mexican American roots'). So Aboriginal self-help is good in itself but also inspirational for other groups and also I think in terms of a progressive politics that can marry better the necessary central state activity with community self-expression and empowerment both in the Aboriginal context and even wider. Today we’ve launched the Good Design for Housing website which shows examples of good design already in NSW. Last year we announced changes that will fast-track a greater diversity of homes like residential flat buildings of 3-6 storeys, terraces, townhouses, duplexes and smaller 1-2 storey apartment blocks in suburbs where they are not currently allowed. 💡A thought provoking piece of work has recently released been released called ‘Are industry good organisations good for industry? A reimagined future: finding the #CommonGround ' 💡 the joint piece of work by AGMARDT (The Agricultural and Marketing Research and Development Trust) & KPMG New Zealand is intended to stimulate debate and discussion. NZ is so lucky with the resources housed within our industry bodies, CRIs, cooperatives and others that support the sector. Which other industry provides a complete how-to for anyone entering their sector. Information is certainly not the issue! I think the report certainly highlights a lot of the frustrations currently held and the opportunity to discuss pathways forward. 💡Definitely worth a read and the podcasts hosted by Sarah Perriam-Lampp give a great snapshot of the intent and content of the report.

Over the last week both InsideOUT and Gender Minorities Aotearoa have published analysis and submission guides for the proposed puberty blocker restrictions. "This article summarises the aims, methods, information architecture, outputs, and innovations of the Australian Cultural Data Engine (ACD-Engine), a project that harnesses leading cultural databases to build bridges to research, industry, and government. The project investigates digital heritage collections, data ontologies, and interoperability, building an information architecture to enhance the open sharing of Australian cultural data. Working with a cross-disciplinary team, the ACD-Engine establishes conceptual and technical frameworks for better understanding the platforms and uses of cultural data across a range of national and international contexts. This new cyber-infrastructure advances cultural data aggregation and interoperability whilst prioritising data quality and domain distinctiveness to answer new research questions across disciplines. By now, most of us would have heard about the protest by Māori MPs in the New Zealand Parliament yesterday. We were fascinated by the deeper behavioral design principles underlying this act. Here is what we think about this: This demonstration underscores the capacity of traditional practices to evolve and remain relevant in modern society, serving as powerful vehicles for social and political change. Rituals, by their very nature, are symbolic actions that carry profound cultural and spiritual significance. They often involve repetitive patterns, specific gestures, and prescribed words, creating a sense of order and meaning. When performed collectively, rituals can foster a sense of belonging, shared identity, and communal purpose.   This is exactly what was demonstrated yesterday. The synchronized movements, chants, and fierce expressions created a powerful visual and auditory experience. The collective performance amplified the emotions and a sense of unity among the performers and the audience.  They connect individuals to their ancestors and to the collective memory of their community. What a classic expression by Māori MPs as they tap into the powerful source of cultural identity and historical legitimacy. It shows how ancient rituals can be reinterpreted and reimagined to address contemporary challenges. Reflections on Building a Strategic Design Culture #2 Having identified a powerful link between a strategic Design Culture and organisational resilience – how do you actually create such a culture?  Doesn't having a team of designers do this automatically? The answer lies in how you leverage your Design capability. There’s a real cost to the business when Design teams are used as executors of unproven ideas about what customers will buy or adopt. Because while they may want to interrogate assumptions, they're not given time - being pushed instead to just deliver. So on the surface it looks like things are working, the true cost is initially hidden, because scale it over time or across multiple squads and as adoption falters, growth is harder to achieve. The classic mistake is to add more people …yet that causes progress to slow more - due to Brooks’ law, quoted in the book ‘The Myth of Man Hours’… which states that "Adding manpower to a late software project makes it later…” Leaders know the opportunity cost of Design teams working this way is that they’ll almost never be able to integrate a series of value propositions into a coherent ecosystem (such as Amazon's exponential 'flywheel', where each proposition accelerates the other) so that despite costs climbing, growth is elusive and competitors seem to move faster. Leaders who value a strategic Design Culture understand this. It’s why they act to do the opposite. They constantly work to make the design of the whole greater than the sum of its parts. They apply Human-Centred Design to critically assess and ensure services they create are truly valuable before executing them, rather than taking a tech-first (or Hippo-first) approach. Because every minute spent ensuring it's going to be adopted saves days, weeks, or months, fixing it. It's how you avoid things like this: https://lnkd.in/gzd62ase Strategic leaders seek to create an environment that integrates design into every aspect of the business - not because they love 'design' but because clarity and customer-centricity comes from data and real world evidence to create true agility. And as the accuracy and velocity of their decision-making increases, the enterprise can confidently and quickly invest in developing services it knows will be adopted and paid for, before they even launch – and that every value proposition is clear and interlinked in the minds of customers. So outcomes change. Waste and duplication cut, tech is integrated and risk reduced. Savings are made. Value exponential. Yet if this is all so clear, why do so few enterprises actively embrace this approach? Why are they missing an opportunity to apply Design to reimagine ‘how it works’ as Steve Jobs put it?
