October 2024 Edition of the Australian Institute of Company Directors Magazine. #Cybersecurity ranks as the number-one concern for businesses, followed by financial, legal and regulatory risks, a new report has found. In partnership with YouGov, McGrathNicol surveyed more than 300 C-suite executives and board directors across Australian businesses with 50 or more employees. Cyber risk was a top-five concern for 2024 for 68 per cent of organisations, the highest of any risk category. The report found 71 per cent of organisations don't conduct due diligence on their key suppliers' cybersecurity practices, and over 75 per cent don't require mandatory reporting of cyber or data breaches affecting their suppliers. While 87 per cent of surveyed organisations were confident their business has a comprehensive insider risk management program in place, less than a third have implemented fundamental insider risk controls. Only 28 per cent use a risk-based vetting and due diligence framework for employees and suppliers or contractors, while only 27 per cent have education/awareness programs in place, and just 18 per cent have appointed an authority accountable for insider risk. The recent release by the Australian, state and territory governments of the national framework for the assurance of artificial intelligence in government (AI Assurance Framework) provides much-needed guidance that paves the way for these organisations to harness AI effectively and responsibly. A statement issued within the framework acknowledges the importance of government leadership in the safe and responsible use of AI, with careful oversight of legal, privacy, security, and ethical risks such as bias and fairness. “To gain public confidence and trust, we commit to being exemplars in the safe and responsible use of AI,” the governments said. “This requires a lawful, ethical approach that places the rights, well-being and interests of people first.” The development of the framework can help overcome public scepticism and boost trust in AI, paving the way for government and public sector organisations to realise its transformative potential.

All over the globe, governments recognize the AI arms race is on. Specifically there's a growing conversation about the long term economic and security importance of developing "sovereign artificial intelligence (AI)". In Australia there is a lag in AI research and development. Here's a thought-provoking question: Should Australia invest taxpayer dollars into solar panel manufacturing, or should we focus on cultivating an industry capable of powering the manufacturing of intelligence for the 4th Industrial Revolution? A report from the CSIRO highlights that Australia is behind in creating foundational AI models, such as those used by OpenAI's ChatGPT, with the majority being developed overseas. This gap could affect Australia's ability to use AI to boost productivity and strengthen the economy. Professor Anton van den Hengel from the University of Adelaide points out that AI could significantly enhance efficiency in industries, a process that could span the next two decades. He emphasizes the importance of sovereign AI in capitalizing on economic opportunities that AI can provide, including applications not yet imagined. The issue also extends to education and infrastructure. For instance, using AI models developed abroad might compromise Australian values or priorities and could pose security and cultural risks. Please steer clear of cloud-based AI software applications or bolt-ons, as many forensics companies have no idea where your data is being sent.

There is a lot of coverage, however I found the analysis in this article quite thought provoking and relevant. Essentially, that the AI market is a mess and there is a clear misbalance of power due to a lack of information and understanding. "Australia's federal government has today launched a proposed set of mandatory guardrails for high-risk AI alongside a voluntary safety standard for organizations using AI. Each of these documents offers ten mutually reinforcing guardrails that set clear expectations for organizations across the AI supply chain. They are relevant for all organizations using AI, including internal systems aimed at boosting employee efficiency and externally-facing systems such as chatbots. Most of the guardrails relate to things like accountability, transparency, record-keeping and making sure humans are overseeing AI systems in a meaningful way. They are aligned with emerging international standards such as the ISO standard for AI management and the European Union's AI Act." #ai

AI Governance is not just a concept somewhere “out there” in the dataverse, it is a very real and urgent topic that needs addressing here and now in the real world, affecting real people. This article is an example of the risks that un-governed use of AI can generate.
