Today Werner Vogels treated us to 6 lessons in Simplexity, or making complex systems simpler. 1: Make evolvability a requirement, understand that systems will change over time. 2: Break complexity into pieces to make scaling simpler. 3: Align organisation to architecture, encourage ownership and build small teams. 4: Organise into cells to handle operational complexity, each AWS customer has their own cell. 5: Design predictable systems. An event driven architecture can really help combined with a simple approach to changes and updates. 6: Automation makes complexity manageable. This comprehensive new report from CSIRO in Australia explores the case for the creation of sovereign AI foundation models, given their dependency on models developed elsewhere - a similar situation to the current state here in Aotearoa. Elanor Huntington, CSIRO Director of Digital, National Facilities & Collections says "But they are rarely made in Australia. The vast majority come from the United States and China. Our industry is becoming increasingly dependent on these models. On one hand this is an opportunity. All these great tools are appearing at our fingertips. But there is also risk. Will these models boost the competitive interest of Australian companies and workers? Will they behave according to our norms, cultural and ethical expectations? Can we be adapting, fine-tuning or building our own AI foundation models to support our own industry and workers? If so, how should we go about doing this? It's been a real privilege contributing with an awesome group of Māori practitioners to Amazon's Māori Data Lens on their Well Architected Framework. Not only was the work interesting, but the people were choice. Renata Hakiwai, Ngapera Riley, Nikora Ngaropo, Lee Timutimu, Wade Reweti, and Eli Pohio. E kore e mutu ngā mihi. My initial thought back last year was, 'I'm no cloud architect'. But this kaupapa reminded that here and now, anything I can see or access on my phone, TV or laptop, is in the cloud: from my whanau photos, to my contacts list, trust and marae committee minutes and accounts, my Kindle versions of Ngā Moteatea, pdfs of Matariki karakia, posts on FB about whakapapa and pūrākau, my work via Office 365, and even special whānau videos on Youtube. Moreover, Amazon seemed to share our interest in making sure our stuff is secure, private and also accessible when we need it. I knew too that Amazon is a big Taniwha, and it does not think, speak or understand us. But as my Dad always said, 'the kumara aren't going to peel themselves!' In other words, if you want to make a change, roll your sleeves up and get stuck in! So, I said yes! To be fair, the work was challenging. This is a technical guide for technical stuff. Moreover, the group did not suffer from groupthink. Yet we still we managed to craft a general te ao Māori framework tailored to address the unique challenges and opportunities Māori data faces in the cloud. The end is a small step towards responsibly managing Māori data in the cloud. There is some advice about thinking, and percieving, as well as advice about the importance of relationships. Not rocket science, but definitely marae science - the 1000 cups of tea! While the road ahead is long, I am hopeful about the positive impact te ao Māori can have technology and how it is developed. This is our attempt to follow the path of Tane and grab the strong vine: Kia mau ki te aka matua, kei mau ki te aka taepa! Finally, a big mihi to Craig and Judith at Amazon for their dedication and engagement. Lets be honest, Amazon is a huge organisation and they both had to work through layers of people to pitch the whole idea, to land it, and get final approval. I know that their work with Maurea Consulting and the amazing Precious Clark clearly inspired them to deep dive in to this. This situation not only affects the financial stability of support coordinators but also impacts the quality of care provided to NDIS participants. **The Dilemma:** 1. **Dual Funding:** Many participants are eligible for support from both the NDIS and other funding sources (such as Medicare, state programs, or local services). However, determining which agency should cover specific supports can be complex. 2. **Support Coordinators Caught in the Middle:** Support coordinators often find themselves caught in the crossfire. They must navigate the intricacies of multiple funding streams while ensuring participants receive the right supports at the right time. 3. **False Allegations:** Unfortunately, some support coordinators face false allegations when they advocate for proper funding allocation. These allegations can harm their professional reputation and financial stability. **The Impact:** - **Loss of Income:** When support coordinators advocate for cross-funded supports, they risk losing income due to disagreements with other agencies. Their commitment to participant well-being sometimes comes at a personal cost. - **Participant Experience:** Participants may experience delays or gaps in services due to funding disputes. This impacts their quality of life and ability to achieve their goals. **The Way Forward:** 1. **Clear Guidelines:** We need clearer guidelines on which agency should fund specific supports. Collaboration between agencies is essential to avoid duplication and ensure efficient use of resources. 2. **Education and Training:** Support coordinators should receive training on cross-funding scenarios, conflict resolution, and effective communication. This empowers them to advocate confidently for participants. 3. **Digital Solutions:** An innovative digital system could facilitate early complaint resolution and streamline communication between agencies. An interesting stat was shared at a recent conference I attended: the average tenure for individuals in the data and analytics space with one organisation is now just 2.6 years. What used to be considered a short stint has now become the norm. Getting there ... #digitalID legislation is good ✅ and now terrific to see some funding for trials of #digitalwallets and #verifiablecredentials as part of the Australian Government Digital Identity System (AGDIS). Identity is great but only half the story. We need an end-to-end and secure system. It is pointless to be able to prove who you are digitally if you still have to produce/copy/send paper documents and certificates.

"Thus far, AI models built on synthetic data have tended to run into trouble. Australian AI researcher and podcaster Jathan Sadowski referred to the isssues as 'Habsburg AI,' a reference to the deeply-inbred Habsburg dynasty and their ultra-prominent chins that signaled their family's penchant for intermarriage. As Sadowski tweeted last February, this term describes 'a system that is so heavily trained on the outputs of other generative AI's that it becomes an inbred mutant, likely with exaggerated, grotesque features' — much like, well, the Hapsburg jaw. Last summer, Futurism interviewed another data researcher, Rice University's Richard G. Baraniuk, about his term for this phenomenon: 'Model Autophagy Disorder,' or 'MAD' for short.
