There's some light at the end of a brutal tunnel for parts of Australian media, according to PwC's Australian Entertainment and Media Outlook report, released this morning. Retail media – particularly Coles and Woolworths – will take a bigger chunk of search revenues. Consumers will keep spending billions of dollars on content, though much will be soaked up by telcos. Broadcasters are managing the transition to streaming better than newsmedia went digital – but are currently in the transition danger zone. Digital out of home is on a tear although the network growth which has underpinned revenue growth may have reached equilibrium according to capex spend analysis by the consultancy. Gaming is finally benefiting from the immutable law of advertising - money follows the eyeballs, whether that's all those eyeballs down in the basement playing League of Legends, Call of Duty, and Halo, or on the train to work playing Monopoly Go, Roblox or Candy Crush. What’s interesting is that there appears to be a spectrum in how agencies, particularly in the US, are doing this. BUDGETING | NSW state government is predicting more debt for the country's most populous state. Our COO Jacquie Alley GAICD gave AdNews Australia insight into what this means for people and brands. "The Media Store chief operating officer Jacquie Alley is slightly more optimistic as the boosts to accessible healthcare may shift consumer spending in the coming months. "The biggest loser from this budget appears to be property investors with land tax thresholds increasing and additional duties and land taxes placed upon foreign investors. "So, what does all this mean for media investment? I suspect it will remain a short market in the next 3-6 months as consumers continue to struggle until many of these proposed changes take effect. "In turn, customers will be harder to convert, particularly in what will be perceived as discretionary spending categories, with brands needing to spend more money to find them." Thousands of Aussies have urged the supermarket giant to ditch its collab with Roblox. Mother-of-three Johanna Hull, has launched a petition calling on Woolworths Supermarkets to drop its partnership with gaming platform Roblox - a supposedly child-friendly gaming platform, that has repeatedly come under fire facing allegations of grooming, kidnapping, rape and the trading of sexual content with kids ranging 8-14 years old, since 2019. The Daily Telegraph reported earlier today: 'Thousands of furious Australians have slammed Woolworths for partnering with a controversial multibillion-dollar gaming platform that has exposed some children to harmful content.' Petition organiser Johanna said: “I think Woolworths is undermining parents who are trying to keep their children safe online. “Roblox has featured in so many articles by online safety experts allowing children to be sexually exploited, exposed to adult content and of course involved in online bullying. “To me, having this promoted to my kids while we grocery shop firstly just shows incredibly poor judgment on Woolworths behalf. But secondly confirms for me that they clearly put profits above the well being of their customer base and their future customers.” We recently highlighted the core issues with Roblox outlined in a scathing report published last month by Hindenburg Research. After extensive exploration of Roblox’s metaverse researchers found the platform to be: “An X-rated pedophile hellscape, replete with users attempting to groom our avatars, groups openly trading child pornography, widely accessible sex games, violent content and extremely abusive speech—all of which is open to young children and all while Roblox has cut content moderation spending to appease Wall Street and boost earnings.” See our blog 'Gaming Gone Wrong' in the comments for more on this. According to The Daily Telegraph 'Last year, the Australian Federal Police said children as young as 12 are being targeted by extremists who are infiltrating online gaming platforms, including Roblox, with a rising number of children being investigated for radicalised ideologies.'
