Today the Tasmanian Parliamentary Standing Committee of Public Accounts tabled this report: Follow-up of Auditor-General Report - No.4 of 2019-20 – Rostering of Specialists in Tasmania’s Major Hospitals. The Committee made 15 findings and 4 recommendations. The recommendations highlight the need to expedite the automated processes to ensure fairness and transparency in rostering across the Department of Health: · expediting the implementation of the BPR Framework to ensure that all rosters are managed transparently and fairly across all departments · expediting the implementation of the BPR Framework to ensure that all rosters are managed transparently and fairly across all departments. · progress the recording of time scheduled for private practice in specialist rosters to enhance transparency, fairness, and the management of specialist fatigue, and · assessing and incorporating appropriate levels of non-clinical time into specialists' rosters, as part of the BPR system to allow for better-structured working days and compliance with professional standards. Not everyday two of the major #auspol polling firms deliver their latest Federal politics analysis within the same MSM media cycle. Some very interesting polling data after one of the more fractuoua periods in Australian & western society for many years. RoyceComm Nine Newspapers & the Resolve Political Monitor paints a stark picture around cost of living biting alongside a sliding Labor primary vote, a firmer Coalition post Voice referenda l bounce still very strong > 1/3 of electorate 3rd party voting cohort. 2PP all square ALP 50 / Coalition 50.The Age Over at The Australian & the long-standing ‘Newspoll’ has similar trend lines but a stronger Labor primary (a 33% instead of a just 30%) & a retained 51/49% 2PP across party outcome. Three weeks out from the all-critical Federal Budget, technically the last of this first-term Govt as an election will be due by May 2025. The Government’s expectation is clear - tech companies operating in Australia should do more to proactively protect their users. That’s why I announced at The Sydney Institute that the Albanese Government will legislate a Digital Duty of Care to ensure platforms proactively prevent obvious harms to Australians online. The legislated duty will future-proof the Online Safety Act, and put the legal responsibility for keeping Australians safe on tech companies. It will ensure Australians continue to benefit from world-leading online safety protections under the Act. This important change will help to end the era of entering digital environments at your own risk.

Very excited to read the report from the Untapped Research project. This ambitious (maybe slightly crazy) ARC linkage which the Australian Library and Information Association was a partner on, actually set up a publishing house, negotiated rights reversion for out of print Australian classics and then turned them into ebooks loaned through public libraries. The findings included: 1. There was substantial public demand to borrow these titles  2. There was substantial public demand to purchase these titles  3. There was no evidence that e-lending cannibalised book sales (and some evidence it may actually have increased them) 4. Library promotional efforts influenced circulation 5. Reversion can open up new streams of income for authors 6. I have been nominated as a candidate for the ITS Australia Board of Directors and to represent the University of Technology Sydney from 2025 onwards. The online voting has opened today and will close on Wednesday, 27 November, as announced via dedicated links sent to ITS Australia core members:   - Adelaide 3:30pm - Brisbane 3:00pm - Melbourne 4:00pm - Perth 1:00pm - Sydney 4:00pm If you wonder what I have done over the past 10 years as part of ITS Australia membership and what my plans are if I get elected, please read below: ITS Australia contribution summary: I have been involved with ITS Australia for the last 10 years, previously as part of CSIRO and, more recently, as part of the University of Technology Sydney. Over the years, I have organised several presentations and special sessions and invited renowned speakers from all around the world. I have also held demonstration booths and served as chair reviewer and chair organiser for several ITS Australia summits and various national conferences. I was a co-organiser of the Data Community of Practice and represented scientific progress on various mobility issues several times. In 2024, I was part of the ITS Australia Summit, organised demonstrations of our AI and transport capabilities at UTS, and also helped to organise the ITS Career Expo for NSW students to join the summit for free and engage with industry. That was really well received: more than 100 students joined, and I was so happy to receive so much positive feedback after this. What’s my plan if I get elected? For the next 2 years, if I get elected as an ITS Australia Board Director, I plan to leverage my scientific position and knowledge in the ITS field and: -         Contribute to organising and holding a joint event between two large conferences on the Gold Coast in 2025, such as the IEEE ITSC conference and the ITS Australia Summit. Getting there ... #digitalID legislation is good ✅ and now terrific to see some funding for trials of #digitalwallets and #verifiablecredentials as part of the Australian Government Digital Identity System (AGDIS). Identity is great but only half the story. We need an end-to-end and secure system. It is pointless to be able to prove who you are digitally if you still have to produce/copy/send paper documents and certificates.

Why don’t voters credit the Albanese Government for anything it’s done? The lack of a narrative. And the West Wing points to an answer for a reset. Here’s the issue: Labor’s critical communications failure was not setting the narrative (and voter expectations) early in their term: 👉 “Tough times are ahead, but we’ll get through it together, and we’re here to help.” Instead, they’re being blamed for the tough times rather than recognised for the help they’ve provided. Dutton amplifies this by repeatedly asking voters, “Are you worse off after three years of Labor?” Labor can’t unring that bell, but here’s what they can do moving forward: 1️⃣ Acknowledge voters’ pain. 2️⃣ Offer hope and confidence. Tell voters there’s a plan and we’re turning a corner. 3️⃣ Create unity through shared struggle. Frame the narrative as one of resilience and common purpose. This clip from The West Wing is instructive. It shows a voter accepting that life is supposed to be hard. He just wants a government that can make it just a little easier — because even small changes can make all the difference. The Albanese Government has tried to do just this, with policies like the energy rebate. Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) are encouraged to apply for more than $3 million in grants through the Cook Government of Western Australia’s Local Capability Fund (LCF) with #grants of up to $50,000 available. There are five rounds of grants launched today that can assist local SMEs with their bids for Government and private sector #contracts. The #LCF helps recipients improve their capability, capacity and competitiveness to supply goods, services and works to the Government, major projects and other important markets. There are four state-wide LCF rounds for Western Australian SMEs: ➡️ supplying key projects - assisting SMEs to supply to key Government and private sector #projects in priority sector markets; ➡️ Aboriginal business - to assist majority Aboriginal owned businesses to supply #goods, #services and #works to Government and the private sector; ➡️ standards compliance - assisting with the costs of engaging #external expertise to carry out implementation and third-party #certification of seven specific national and international standards; ➡️ digital transformation - providing initial support for eligible businesses to adopt and use #digital technologies and #data, whilst furthering the Government’s understanding of SME needs in this area. A fifth Regional Business Round is available #exclusively for SMEs located across Western Australia’s nine #regions. Through the LCF, more than 700 businesses have received total funding of $26.3 million, helping secure more than $1.25 billion in contract awards. Only 29% of the Australian Government agencies we surveyed on the Information Publication Scheme have a strategy for increasing open access to information they hold. This was down from 35% in 2018. By being ‘open by design’ and publishing information proactively, government agencies can uphold the community’s fundamental right to access government information and build trust.
