Think you know how to apply neuroscience? Think again. Let’s cut through the hype and get real. What does it mean to apply neuroscience in your professional practice? Do you explain brain structures or functions to clients, patients, or students? Or do you use tools or techniques that are informed by neuroscience research? Regrettably, the excitement for 'using neuroscience' (in both explanations and tools) often surpasses the practitioner's knowledge. This is because neuroscience doesn't usually offer pre-packaged coaching tools. Keeping up-to-date with the latest scientific literature, understanding it, and applying it in practical settings such as education, therapy, or HR can be a considerable challenge. Did you know that 1 out of 5 Australians have experienced at least a 12 month mental disorder in their lives from a recent Australian Bureau of Statistics study? Did you know that Addiction, Trauma, Anxiety, Depression, Relationship Issues, burnout and other Mental Health challenges have only gone up to its highest ever recorded levels in the last 3 years? So What does this mean…. The COVID-19 pandemic has also heightened the stress of teachers as they adapted in record time to home learning and ever-changing directives over the last 2+ years. Since the dawn of the pandemic, teaching staff are being met with more demands than ever before as schools attempt to make up for lost time. Other service professions, particularly in the health system face even more dramatic challenges. This is all made more challenging by the rising rates of burnout among staff, absenteeism, and staff shortages which are causing an uneven distribution of workload among teachers and school staff. With staff barely able to get through the expectations placed upon then, many are struggling to feel supported, stay optimistic, and feel engaged with their careers. It is in times like this that it is even more important to take care of your mental health and wellbeing. You have to take action. You have to put things into place to care for yourself. QUESTION & ALFRED: When is it okay to be anti-management? Categorically, we should not bite the hand that feeds us… UNLESS you are being asked to do something illegal or immoral. If and when this point comes, you will have to stand for something you believe in or risk falling for everything. Outside of the above, it will really do you no good to be “anti-management”. If you have been reading previous “QUESTION & ALFRED” posts, then you do know you have the power of CHOICE (i.e. to leave or to stay) and there may be instances when you must value peace and make it foremost – choosing to be “anti-management” will definitely put you in a “gray area”... And falling in a gray area will only lead to more gray areas later on.
