Recognising the pressing need to support the mental wellbeing of aged care nurses, Altaira, through our partnership with Healthcare Heartbeat, have provided support for new nurses participating in the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (SA Branch) Aged Care Transition Professional Program, which launched during April 2024. This turnover underscores the challenges of maintaining continuity and quality of care, increasing workload and stress for remaining staff, and meeting regulatory standards. To address these issues, healthcare organizations can focus on effective retention strategies: 1. Hire the right people in the first place: According to a report by the Australian Human Resources Institute, the average cost per hire for companies in Australia is $26,000, emphasizing the importance of identifying candidates who align with the organization’s culture and are likely to stay long-term. 2. Onboard your people with purpose: Structured onboarding programs are crucial to reducing early turnover.
