Last month I had the pleasure of spending the day with a group of CDO's in Australia. The dance between #AI and #DataGovernance was the discussion of the day and it led to a collaboration between our CluedIn team and Microsoft to sum up the essential defensive and responsible offense elements of #DataGovernance in an article. Every #data initiative should be tied to a key business metric that hits either the top line or bottom line. Super important reminder: CSIRO's Data61 is collaborating with the Department of Home Affairs to develop the Voluntary Data Classification Framework, set to be available by late 2025. This framework will help Australian industry organisations classify and define the value of their data in a consistent, unified way. It will allow businesses to segment their information and apply proportionate operational controls to reduce enterprise risk. Ultimately, it's about strengthening data governance and reducing barriers, which in turn helps build trust when using and sharing data. Check out the consultation process below and have your say! This is critical work, as data truly drives everything. After all, software may eat the world, AI may eat software—but a solid data foundation ensures that everything runs smoothly. This comprehensive new report from CSIRO in Australia explores the case for the creation of sovereign AI foundation models, given their dependency on models developed elsewhere - a similar situation to the current state here in Aotearoa. Elanor Huntington, CSIRO Director of Digital, National Facilities & Collections says "But they are rarely made in Australia. The vast majority come from the United States and China. Our industry is becoming increasingly dependent on these models. On one hand this is an opportunity. All these great tools are appearing at our fingertips. But there is also risk. Will these models boost the competitive interest of Australian companies and workers? Will they behave according to our norms, cultural and ethical expectations? Can we be adapting, fine-tuning or building our own AI foundation models to support our own industry and workers? If so, how should we go about doing this? What's Australia's best placement in the global value chain for AI foundation models? There are many more questions.
