Is your data ready to ensure the success of the implementation of your new system? As high as 70-80% of system implementations fail, and of this, it has been cited that as high as 30% of the data in the system once launched is incorrect. In the countless system implementations I have been part of, I always start with “how confident are you on the quality of the data going into the new system, and what is your data preparation plan?”. We are currently working with a client who is moving from outsourcing to insourcing various assets, and is looking for a system to manage the assets once insourced. The challenge they have is the data going into the system is manually constructed in Excel, and lacks governance to ensure it is correct, accurate and timely. If not addressed, this lack of data quality issues will hinder the system implementation, provide inaccurate reports and may also put the insourcing strategy at risk. Prior to any new system implementation, it is critical you ensure your data is secure and fit-for-purpose, and to ensure your processes are documented and optimised. Only then, will you be able to truly realise the envisioned ROI. In addition to data quality, it is also critical businesses understand what data is being captured, where the data is being held and how it is stored to ensure they are meeting regulatory requirements. This comprehensive new report from CSIRO in Australia explores the case for the creation of sovereign AI foundation models, given their dependency on models developed elsewhere - a similar situation to the current state here in Aotearoa. Elanor Huntington, CSIRO Director of Digital, National Facilities & Collections says "But they are rarely made in Australia. The vast majority come from the United States and China. Our industry is becoming increasingly dependent on these models. On one hand this is an opportunity. All these great tools are appearing at our fingertips. But there is also risk. Value-based system redesign requires a cultural shift and change in mindset to the same extent that it involves the technical implementation of outcomes measurement or optimisation of investment. However, change only happens when people are engaged and connected. A whole of system shift in mindset is required in Australia to drive the collective action necessary to embed VBHC in practice. While there is a growing commitment to the pursuit of VBHC in Australia, much of the activity to support this shift is occurring in silos. Entrenched cultural beliefs around professional and jurisdictional boundaries are hampering people’s ability to adopt the necessary helicopter view and look beyond their traditional spheres of influence to identify opportunities for optimisation and innovation across the full pathway of care, from prevention through to end of life. In the words of Dr Sally Lewis, it ‘is time we challenged ourselves on the status quo.’ In Australia, this will require lifting our heads to look beyond the entrenched silos of our health system to connect, share and collaborate in pursuit of the shared goal of improved outcomes. Attention and resourcing are needed to support the development of trusted and meaningful partnerships across the system.
