What drives scenario analysis in budgeting and forecasting?
Focus on what is significantly important in achieving your strategic objective. I have seen instances where too many immaterial - non core services and ideas creep into a forecast and this can cause the team to be distracted from the wholistic plan. Another tip is to always compare your revenue growth with capacity. For instance in a service based organisation - demand for growing revenue may be apparent however if you do not have the staff to meet the demand for delivering services you will never meet your objectives. The key is to compare revenue drivers with capacity drivers and assess whether any gaps in staff capacity or revenue growth. Once gaps are identified you can plan revenue growth with hiring and training new staff.

What drives scenario analysis in budgeting and forecasting?
Measure what matters - its really important when preparing scenario analysis. If you cannot measure the actual results of the key performance drivers then either of two things: 1. Find a performance measure which can be measured and use that to drive your scenario's and budgets; or 2. Fix your system so the key performance drivers can be measured accurately and then create the scenario. There are leading and lagging performance indicators. The leading indicators are the ones which are forward looking and are key to refining rolling forecasts. The more accurate your actual performance data the more accurate your ability to use these leading indicators to model and make business decisions.

What drives scenario analysis in budgeting and forecasting?
When I am asked to prepare a scenario analysis I always want to know the story behind these numbers - for instance "what you are we planning on achieving under this scenario?' (i.e. is the target revenue growth, operational expansion or cost reduction. - all of which have key drivers). We want to know what the key performance drivers are to achieve the outcomes in this scenario. For instance a key driver for a service based organisation is staff hours and therefore increasing revenue requires an understanding of staff capacity and utilisation. Each scenario is therefore based on the activities and the level of certainty in achieving those objectives rather than just numbers.
