Hi Construction Practioners Our team at Western Sydney University is pursuing Construction Contracting-centric research. Australia has created the National Priorities Industry Linkage Fund (NPILF) as part of this country's reprioritisation within tertiary education. Recently, WSU's School of Engineering, Design and Built Environment has launched a Work Integrated Learning Initiative. As part of that effort, we have listed below four surveys that we hope will significantly deepen our understanding and add to the body of knowledge. We believe this will bring currency to subject content and help increase engagement with the industry by sharing findings. Please consider participating in one (or more) anonymous surveys. Each survey has approximately 20 questions and should take no more than 8 minutes. Builders considering cutting corners on construction sites in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven should think again with Building Commission NSW establishing a permanent presence in the region from Monday. Following the establishment of the Commission in December 2023, it has moved quickly to broaden its focus to one of the state’s busiest building and construction hubs, south of Sydney. There are more than 4,000 active construction sites in the Illawarra Shoalhaven area making it the ideal location to pilot the Commission’s strategy to create more dedicated regional teams, as part of its commitment to work where homes are being built. A local presence will enable inspectors to audit more sites, more often and closely monitor all active projects while also reacting faster to complaints and intelligence. The Illawarra-focussed compliance inspectors will join a growing Commission with the power to issue a range of building orders for serious defects and track their repair before a project can be signed off. As more people move to the regions, it’s essential there is no difference in the quality of homes being built, compared with metropolitan areas. New resources in the region will go hand in hand with tools like iCIRT that independently rate building professionals and give consumers confidence about their financial, legal and compliance history. There are more than 100 iCIRT rated builders already operating in NSW. To kick off the Commission’s engagement in the region, a roadshow for industry and government stakeholders about the Commission’s regulatory priorities and key focus areas is being held early next week.

Women considering a future in construction can now access all the help they need to get started in the building industry, thanks to a new online platform. Master Builders Association of New South Wales teamed up with the NSW Government to launch the new site, which will serve as a digital hub for women to start loading up their construction careers. The one-stop shop will help provide women, girls, parents and employers with all the resources, support and advice they require while considering a trade. The new website, Women Building NSW, went live earlier this week as part of industry and government’s latest attempt to refresh the industry’s lagging worker numbers.  With female workers making up less than 13 per cent of the entire construction industry and only 2 per cent of tradespeople, It’s no secret that trades have always been a heavily male-dominated line of work. Master Builders NSW Executive Director Brian Seidler says the online digital platform will allow the industry to tap into an under-utilised tradie filling resource by attracting more female workers into construction careers. “As one of the largest sectors, with around 150,000 businesses employing around 400,000 people, the building and construction industry plays a crucial role in the growth and prosperity across every city, town and region in NSW, he said. “This presents a massive opportunity for the future success of the industry with an untapped pool of the population who have an array of skills and talents to bring to the table.” Mr Seidler says bringing in more female trade workers will become essential for the nation to dig itself out of the housing crisis hole, as the federal government targets constructing 1.2 million new homes by the end of the decade. Master Builders Australia CEO Denita Wawn said the construction industry brings in more lady tradies to help meet housing and infrastructure targets over the coming decades. “As one of the biggest sectors in the economy, the building and construction industry employs over 1.3 million Australians, but a female participation rate of (under) 15 per cent with only 3 per cent on the tools is simply not good enough,” she said. “Workplace shortages are putting immense pressure on our ability to meet housing targets, and Master Builders believes women will play a vital role in rectifying that.” “Increased female participation has many benefits; it lifts productivity, boosts the economy, facilitates financial independence, assists in developing an inclusive and diverse culture and meets the much-needed workforce shortages the building and construction industry is facing.” Click on the link to visit the Women Building NSW website:- (https://lnkd.in/gNq2nFc7)

What does good look like? How do you measure a project’s success? … depends. For example … Was the Sydney Opera House a success or failure? The explicit purpose of the project was to build a national opera house, but implicitly Sydney was competing with Melbourne (had just been awarded the Olympics) to become a new world city. In simple terms the project cost 10 times (10x) its budget and took 6 years longer to build. It also didn’t comply with the tender brief. But it is a world renowned icon and is even on the UNESCO World Heritage List. And its innovative engineering techniques are still helping to push new projects forward today. And now that we consider the lifecycle of projects more than ever ... Does this mean a measure of success today may not be the same one tomorrow? If so this just adds further complexity to project delivery. So what are the measures of success for today’s projects? What is the context today that we are using to determine this, and if this changes in the short term would this adjust our thinking in how we should measure project success?
