For anyone playing along at home, this is *not* what the ISP says. It says nothing about “Powerwalls”, it doesn’t say “90% of households”, it doesn’t say “$15,000”, it doesn’t say “Let the network use it”. There is no “$121 billion”. This is all confected. It makes a prediction of how much storage will be deployed at the distribution level, which includes household batteries, batteries installed by businesses, community batteries, and electric vehicles and large fleets with V2G enabled. It makes a prediction about how much of that storage will be coordinated, which means some level of control by an electricity retailer or some other aggregator/optimiser, in return a payment. This is something that is happening today, and is not at all radical. It makes this prediction in the same way it makes other predictions about load shapes and volumes at the distribution network level, as input assumptions, because it is a transmission level plan. Should it also be a detailed and integrated plan for distribution networks and distribution-level resources? Maybe. But the conspiracy-minded thinking behind posts like the one below are kind of dumb.

Rooftop Solar in #Australia achieves a major milestone - supplying ~50% of the country's main electrical grid!!! Achieving this milestone for the first time (reached in October 2024) underscores the rapid growth of #solar energy driven by households and businesses looking to offset high electricity costs. Driven by higher electricity costs and favourable policies, there are more than 23 gigawatts (GW) of rooftop solar in Australia, and the number is expected to grow fourfold in the coming decade. If we see the #India numbers, the penetration is ~4% of the total electricity demand. India surely has ambitious plans to scale this up, but challenges like financing and grid integrations make this problematic. India has a long way to go!

This interesting and I have seen similar findings in UK and USA market too. The potential for growth in commercial buildings and warehouses for solar (and often storage) is massive. Not only does it make incredible business sense but we also need to do this at a rapid pace to achieve Paris decarbonisation targets. However this won’t happen without a) capital support (which we generally have available) and b) policy and procedural support especially amongst legislators and grid operators and c) upskilling in installers regarding both the sale and technical delivery processes required to deploy and install at scale. Interested to hear comments from other markets outside Australia and USA and UK where you see low levels of commercial solar penetration with massive growth forescasts for near to mid term. Australia's renewable energy future hinges on effective policy settings at home.   The federal government's expanded Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) has boosted necessary generation investments, but more deep storage is crucial.   Deep storage ensures grid reliability during 2 to 3 days of low renewable periods. Akaysha Energy Pty Ltd on Monday said it has clinched a AUD-650-million (USD 440.4m/EUR 404.2m) debt funding deal for its 415-MW/1,660-MWh Orana battery #energystorage project in New South Wales, along with an off-take contract for roughly half of the project’s capacity. The Australian battery energy developer backed by BlackRock Inc (NYSE:BLK) has raised the three-year debt from a lending consortium of 11 domestic and foreign banks, enabling it to move into construction. According to it, the transaction is the largest financing in a standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) project globally. The group lenders supporting the project comprises ANZ, CBA and Westpac, and international banks BNP, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, DBS, ING, Mizuho, Rabobank, Siemens Financial Services through Siemens Bank, and SMBC. To be installed near Wellington, the Orana battery will have a four-hour discharge capacity to serve the National Electricity Market (NEM). The complex will deploy Tesla’s Megapack technology. Early works at the site have already been initiated, with all battery units seen to be operational in 2026. Roughly 200 MW of Orana’s overall capacity is contracted by EnergyAustralia under a virtual toll off-take deal for 12 years. The specific agreement will allow the power retailer to “notionally” charge and discharge 200 MW of a “virtual battery” within pre-agreed daily bidding parameters. The "single biggest challenge for delivering renewable energy projects" in Australia are assessments under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act according to a new report from the Clean Energy Investor Group and law firm Herbert Smith Freehills The report coincides with a decision to decline a developer who had planned to clear more than 500 hectares of native vegetation next to the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area. I disagree with the report, you can't solve climate change by destroying nature. I understand the desire to build projects on uncleared land stems from not wanting to upset local communities or farmers but it is not the solution. The same ludicrous transmission costs will still need to be applied to the projects resulting in much higher cost of electricity. Why aren’t we focusing on putting generation, storage and usage in the same location as much as possible? There are millions of commercial and industrial properties throughout Australia that use significant amounts of energy but don’t have rooftop solar and batteries.
