Good Governance Does it Help Business Profitability?   The majority of Australian businesses employ between [0 – 19 employees], and 23 % of all businesses recorded a loss in the first half of the 2024 financial year. Interestingly 35% of all Australian businesses that were operating in June 2019 had closed their doors by June 2023[4]. [Australian Bureau of Statistics]. Considering the information provided above, good business governance should be a priority. However, it is not unusual for me to engage with a new client and conduct an overall business review and discover major opportunity for improvement due to poor governance within the business which directly influences profit performance. Generically it starts with a transparent financial control system with clear accountability that allows all users pertinent information which also helps ensure all key stakeholders are responsible for their actions and decisions, with regular reporting and reviews. The system should provide relevant timely information to enable informed strategic decisions. Also, I regularly I visit businesses where there is no real clear definition of roles and responsibilities, clear definition is needed with all employees clearly understanding who is responsible for various decisions and financial approval levels, an ERP system can assist by implementing policy rules helping to ensure spend is optimised and directly linked to business needs. Risk Management is also an area that typically needs more attention, this includes alternative supply chain options, customer payment terms [and aged payments impacting Cashflow] Workplace Health and Safety and other legislative requirements. Capital spend is another area where equipment or machines are purchased without completing some due diligence to ensure it supports the business strategy, and does provide financial benefits, it is important to have a process in place that confirms the benefits outweigh the cost and the business can actually afford the item.    As the old saying goes “What gets measured gets managed”, solid business governance is critical in maintaining a profitable business.   Need more information or require a review of your business? Some insights that we noted: - Pay Gap: The report notes a varying gender pay gap across different segments of the IT industry. For instance, the Game Design and Development sector and the New Tech segment have a gender pay gap on par with national figures, indicating persistent disparities in earnings between genders within these sectors. - Representation of Women: It is highlighted that women are underrepresented in the tech and IT professions, particularly at senior job levels. This underrepresentation decreases further at higher levels of responsibility, suggesting barriers to career advancement for women in the tech industry. - Discrimination and Bias: Non-binary/gender diverse individuals and women report higher instances of discrimination and exclusion in the workplace. This highlights ongoing issues with workplace culture that affect equity and inclusion. - Workplace Culture Issues: The survey found that exclusion was the most commonly reported form of anti-social behavior, with public sector employees and women more likely to experience this. It points to significant cultural challenges within tech workplaces that need to be addressed to foster a more inclusive environment.
