This statement reads, "Google Cloud CEO, Thomas Kurian has confirmed that the disruption arose from an unprecedented sequence of events whereby an inadvertent misconfiguration during provisioning of UniSuper’s Private Cloud services ultimately resulted in the deletion of UniSuper’s Private Cloud subscription. This is an isolated, ‘one-of-a-kind occurrence’ that has never before occurred with any of Google Cloud’s clients globally. This should not have happened. In this article, Joanna Gurry talks to how NAB is steadily reducing its reliance on overnight batch processes to get data from source systems into a central data platform, while also reducing its operational costs. Ada, which runs Databricks on Amazon Web Services (AWS) at its core, replaces several large data platforms, including a 26-year-old Teradata environment considered “intrinsic” to a number of banking operations. One of the key changes with Ada - or, more specifically, with a tool in its stack provided by Fivetran - is that it’s allowing the bank to “move away from file-based ingestion” and be more selective in what gets extracted and replicated in the centralised data platform.

Last month I had the pleasure of spending the day with a group of CDO's in Australia. The dance between #AI and #DataGovernance was the discussion of the day and it led to a collaboration between our CluedIn team and Microsoft to sum up the essential defensive and responsible offense elements of #DataGovernance in an article. Every #data initiative should be tied to a key business metric that hits either the top line or bottom line. UniSuper is one of Australia's largest investment funds with over $120 billion under management. Their IT systems have been offline for over a week now. This outage provides lessons for businesses of all sizes. In a joint statement this morning, UniSuper CEO Peter Chun, and Google Cloud CEO, Thomas Kurian revealed the root cause of UniSuper's week-long ongoing outage: "an inadvertent misconfiguration during provisioning of UniSuper’s Private Cloud services ultimately resulted in the deletion of UniSuper’s Private Cloud subscription". This meant the deletion of "hundreds of virtual machines, databases and applications." There are lessons for us all in this: 1. Don't put all your eggs in one basket by relying on one cloud provider; redundancy across multiple locations with one provider is not enough. Whilst UniSuper had redundant systems across two geographic locations within Google Cloud, data was deleted from both locations when their service subscription was deleted. Read the fine print on some cloud service provider agreements and they'll tell you to take your own backups off platform. Don't say you haven't been told. 2. In a crisis, communicate early and communicate often. It took UniSuper two full business days before they communicated with their 600,000+ members about the outage. In the meantime, members were left wondering if there had been a data breach or member funds had been lost. Since then, UniSuper's CEO has been providing almost daily updates to members, a great improvement on their early response. Technology will break. Like death and taxes, this is a certainty. Every business needs to plan for when that does eventually happen. Identify what could go wrong, implement appropriate mitigations and ensure you have a well-rehearsed crisis management and stakeholder comms plan at hand.

The Reserve Bank of Australia #RBA today released a report analysing the benefits, design choices and challenges associated with linking #fastpayment systems across countries. The report finds that connecting fast #payment systems has the potential to considerably improve the #speed and #transparency of #crossborder payments, benefiting both end users and service providers. Crucial to realising these benefits are well-designed governance, scheme rules and payments processing capabilities, which help to manage risk and ensure a seamless cross-border payments experience. However, establishing an #interlinking arrangement poses challenges, including dealing with differences in #legal and #regulatory frameworks across participating jurisdictions and agreeing on governance arrangements and scheme rules. Linking national fast payment systems is receiving significant international attention as a promising way to improve the #crossborderpayments experience. In light of these developments and #Australia’s commitment to enhancing cross-border payments, the RBA recently collaborated with a number of Australian industry participants involved in cross-border payments to study the interlinking of fast payment systems. The report contributes to the international discussion on this topic and encourages further analysis of key design considerations. This work will also help inform future discussions in Australia about the potential for the domestic fast payment system, the New Payments Platform (NPP), to be linked to fast payment systems in other countries.
