I did a thing. Or maybe I should say I am DOING a thing. A couple of years ago I began a program studying the Neuroscience of Leadership. For years I had gobbled up all the neuroscience books and articles that had any connection to how our brains impact our work environments. So, when I found this Advanced Diploma program that focused specifically on the application of neuroscience to leadership, I jumped. (Second, as an American I had no idea what an Advanced Diploma was. The answer is basically nothing in the U.S. but in Australia, England, and other places formerly colonized by the crown one way to view it is as a step between a Bachelor’s and a Master’s). The part I am most excited for is that graduating from this program allows me to drop into a Master’s program with the first term already under my belt…and so, after many years of wanting to pursue a Master’s degree, I finally am! As we understand the brain more, we are able to understand human behavior more. And a lot of what we often think is conventional knowledge just doesn’t hold (pay incentives for motivating good performance for example is actually counter to what drives us to act in most cases). 🔥 This has been one of the most-read blogs and ideas on my website... Why? ... Because the path it describes resonates with so many in high-performance sport and in the wider corporate world. Where are you in this pathway? 🚩Stuck in phase 3 or 4? 📍To be at a crossroads is a point in your life where you have to make a decision. This decision will determine which path you will take - either positive or negative. It's a time of opportunity or a time of crisis. 📍This doesn't mean it's obvious, and not everyone is aware of this immediately. We have a tendency to cling to our known situation even if it keeps us unhappy. A lead physio told me: 🗣"I've lost track of what normal people feel, I always feel that I'll leave the sport and go do something for myself but I don't know what will finally make me make that decision." 📍The starting point of a transition can be complex. Multiple aspects of your life are affected. The crossroad can creep up on you or hit you like a ton of bricks. Emotions like anger, disappointment, frustration, plummeting self-confidence, and resentment are common reactions to feeling stuck or lost without direction. 📍Another sign pointing you to a crossroads could be resenting having to go to work or self-medicating to cope with the demands of your job. A performance director told me: 🗣"I want stability but I catch myself always looking for the 'next' thing, I find it hard to really vibe with other coaches who just want to talk about work, I want more depth in life, I ask myself am I blinkered by my career in sport, am I lacking the ability to make the decision to step out of sport so I can begin to live my life how I want. One of the most important parts of using art in my coaching practice is to provide a space for clients to leave their thinking mind behind to allow images to emerge that represent their intuitive, knowing and insightful brain. I do this through Stage 1- Imaging of the Five Stages of Coaching With Art. Here slowing the pace down through mindful meditation is the predominant way I do this and then invite clients to allow images to emerge without censorship or judgement. One way of doing this is what I call rich visualisation or rich imaging 🖼️ . This is a particularly useful approach when using a guided exercise. However, it needs practice and understanding as it can be too easy to introduce a too detailed language for our clients and we can inadvertently shape their image. This approach can also be helpful for clients who are new to art-based coaching or who find it difficult to allow images to emerge to their mind's eye 👍 . The importance and challenges of rich visualisation is why I decided to run a webinar on this approach. This experiential webinar allows you to explore what rich visualisation is and try it out on a colleague.
