The presence of female engineers in the field is crucial for fostering innovation and creating a more inclusive society. Currently, less than 14% of degree-qualified engineers in Australia are female, highlighting a significant gender disparity in the industry. Women who do enter engineering often face challenges such as isolation, hostility, and limited opportunities for career advancement. This discouraging environment contributes to the high attrition rate of women from the field, underscoring the need for greater support and female mentorship. Next week is eResearch Australasia 2024, and we have a great panel lined up to celebrate success with Women in HPC, with thanks to AERO for providing support for all of our panelists to attend. We're posting short profiles of our panel members. Join us at the Birds of a Feather Session to hear more! First up is Dr Emily Barker from UWA. WHPC: What kind of things do you do in your job? Emily: Everything required to support the HPC at UWA. This includes software installs, researcher training and onboarding, service requests, and even dealing with the hardware. WHPCANZ: How did you get into HPC/your field? Emily: I applied for this position on a whim and it's my first position in HPC. I am a chemist/physicist with my background being in microscopy. I did my PhD in this area, worked in industry and did a postdoc in this area and then worked at the Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis at University of Western Australia before falling into this position. WHPCANZ: Did you imagine yourself in a job like this when you were at high school? Emily: Not at all. I didn't know HPC was a thing when I was at high school and I was not even really into tech or computers. WHPCANZ: What's the best thing about working in HPC? Emily: I get to work on different things every day. One day it's astronomy and then the next day it's DNA sequencing and oceanography. I get bored quickly so this keeps things interesting. WHPCANZ: What's the hardest thing about working in HPC? Emily: It has been difficult to find a tribe in HPC. There isn't a lot of diversity in my team and no one is the same gender, age range or background to me so it's hard to feel so isolated every day. WHPCANZ: Why do you think diversity of people is important in the HPC field? Emily: I think having diverse people in a team brings diverse experiences and ideas to the table which is the only way to be able to innovate and expand a concept. WHPCANZ: What's your favourite thing about the WHPC+ community? Emily: WHPC+ Australasia is where I found that tribe that I am missing at work. Today we have Sara Ogston, Head of Integration and Product Development at Melbourne University. WHPC: What kind of things do you do in your job? Sara: Manage a team of software developers to help scope out, design, build and release tools and products to enable research. This means I'm taking ideas and turning them into proposals, building them out to more defined specs and working with my software developers to build them, and working with my operations team to maintain and improve existing products and services. WHPCANZ: How did you get into HPC/your field? Sara: My background is in Neuroscience research. My career path was the complete opposite of linear or predictable but I have been able to amass a very unique spread of skills that are very uncommon to have. I have transitioned to different industries several times and have become very used to and open to the steep learning curve of new roles and fields of work. When I was younger it felt very haphazard but now I can see that I am using every single skill I amassed bouncing around and it has led me to have a much more holistic view of the tech world. WHPCANZ: Did you imagine yourself in a job like this when you were at high school? Sara: Looking back to high school and my perception of working in tech I would never have imagined I would be in my current role. I WHPCANZ: What's the best thing about working in HPC? Sara: I love how you can build custom technical solutions to help enable research. Gone are the days when all biomedical research (for example) is only done in a wet lab. We can now leverage computing resources to do more complex research and add levels of analysis we could only dream of 10/15 years ago. WHPCANZ: What's the hardest thing about working in HPC? Sara: Keeping up with the bleeding edge changes in technology is a full time job. WHPCANZ: Why do you think diversity of people is important in the HPC field? Sara: Diversity in tech is critical to the industry. End users are not cookie cutter images of each other so we need to have a wide range of life experiences, perspectives and knowledge building the tech we use every day.

Opposition leader The Hon. Peter Dutton MP has announced seven sites for reactors, unveiling his long-awaited and highly-controversial policy for nuclear power with the claim it could start operating from the 2030s, reports Michelle Grattan. The locations are the sites of former or current coal plants. They have the technical attributes needed for a nuclear plant, including transmission infrastructure, cooling water capacity and a skilled workforce, the opposition policy says. The program would consist of two phases, starting with two establishment projects in the mid-2030s followed by a build of others through to 2050. FORGING A FRAMEWORK FOR A CAREER IN SHIPBUILDING Introducing Keaton, a welder, a footy fan, and this year’s SA Apprentice of the Year. Our apprenticeship program is not just about getting hands-on experience, it’s also about building a cohort of people to play their part in sustaining Australia’s submarines. Keaton was nominated for SA’s Apprentice of the Year by team leader, Adam, who says “it was his work ethic and strong relationships that stood out to me.” Let’s hear from Keaton: What’s it like being the shipbuilding industry? “It’s pretty cool to work on submarines every day, while you could do a welding job at lots of places, there’s nothing like working on a sub.” How did it feel to have formal recognition of your work? “I’m proud, but at the end of the day it’s a team effort. It’s important to remember that it takes lots of people with different skills to complete the job.” Do you have any advice for people thinking about an apprenticeship? “Give it a go. There’s lots of trades to pick from and plenty of opportunity for work.” Want to know more? ARENA is providing $9 million in grant funding for Jet Zero Australia to advance sustainable aviation fuel production. This supports Jet Zero’s $36.8 million front-end engineering design (FEED) study, testing its commercial scale alcohol-to-jet low carbon liquid fuel (LCLF) production facility in Townsville. Modelling suggests the use of sustainable aviation fuels could reduce domestic aviation carbon emissions by 70% compared to conventional fossil-based fuel. Alcohol-to-jet fuel production is an emerging pathway for reducing emissions in aviation. Lessons from the FEED study will be shared with the industry, helping build a path to large-scale production in Australia. Ricardo has been chosen by South Australian Hydrogen Hubs Inc (SA-H2H™) to undertake a feasibility study into hydrogen technology retrofitting as a decarbonisation pathway for heavy duty vehicles in South Australia.  www.ricardo.com South Australia is currently a leading player in the emerging sustainable hydrogen industry, with the South Australian Government funding one of the largest green hydrogen electrolysers in the world and establishing a precinct at Whyalla, located close to some of the state’s prime solar and wind assets for industrial-scale green hydrogen production. However, it also faces two distinct challenges: how this hydrogen industry can be nurtured towards making significant decarbonisation progress, and how to support long-term skilled ‘green’ jobs in the region. SA-H2H™ is delivering two projects to address these challenges. The first, centred around hydrogen mobile refuelling, is underway with industry support. The second is

New $19.4m electric vehicle training facility to open in Canberra A new $19.4 million training facility for industries developing, operating and maintaining EVs and related technology is to be established at the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT). The Electric Vehicle (EV) Centre of Excellence will develop training for mechanics, technicians and developers of light and heavy vehicles and mobile plant technology, hydrogen vehicles and associated fields such as charging infrastructure installation and maintenance, and diploma and degree apprenticeship pathways. The centre will network with TAFEs in other states and leverage partnerships with universities, jobs and skills councils and industry to build up Australia’s skills base to support increased EV uptake and the transition to net zero, said a media statement announcing the news. Congratulations to our #research team who have been awarded $50,000 to develop cutting-edge #drone and #AI technology for an advanced early warning system for the NSW power grid. Dr. Vinh Bui, Professor Brendan Kelaher, and Dr. Alireza Alaei are leading this project under the Power Resilience Project, funded by the Connectivity Innovation Network (CIN) initiative of the NSW Telco Authority. The project aims to strengthen the resilience of critical #telecommunications systems used by #emergencyservices during natural disasters. Using drones equipped with advanced sensors, the team will collect real-time and historic data to predict imminent threats such as floods, bushfires, and landslides. “We will use machine learning to make that very complex data meaningful and useful, enabling quicker assessments by decision-makers, particularly in remote or inaccessible areas,” says Project Lead Dr. Vinh Bui.
