"A catalyst for revolution": The Australian Research Council Training Centre for 'Advanced Building Systems Against Airborne Infection Transmission' (Thrive IAQ) is set to position Australia as the global hub for the design of healthy buildings. At Thrive IAQ, we are bringing academics, researchers, scientists, built environment professionals, industry partners, and government bodies together, to tackle one of our most pressing public health challenges. The launch of Thrive IAQ marks a significant milestone in addressing indoor air quality through collaboration across various industries, including engineering, architecture, and law. During this interview, Ted Baillieu emphasises the importance of ventilation and the need for improved building standards and policies, to ensure healthy indoor environments. He reflects on historical perspectives on ventilation and the challenges posed by modern HVAC systems, highlighting the necessity of balancing indoor air quality with outdoor conditions. We've worked with Architecture & Design (Australia) to bring you another #whitepaper! This one focuses on #bushfire #design - always a relevant topic in Australia. In this document we look at the current landscape of bushfire design, including the relevant building codes, standards and regulations. We highlight the link between bushfire-resilient design and #Passivehouse design principles; discuss the requirements of AS 3959 “Construction of building in bushfire-prone areas” and look at the additional bushfire requirements were added for certain Class 9 buildings in bushfire-prone areas in the #NCC2022. We also introduce the use of Siniat's Weather Defence™ in bushfire applications of residential buildings. Weather Defence is a rigid air barrier most commonly used in ventilated facades or rainscreens to provide a pressure-equalised air cavity, but when used in in the roof system of residential builds it can provide BAL-FZ protection in bushfire prone areas. The problem with overheating in our homes is that there is no legal requirement to prevent this in our New Zealand Building Code. When you energy model the design using the Passive House Standard, the design has to preform to achieve a constant 20 degree temperature during winter and during summer.
