Could or would electric vehicles be "batteries on wheels" to their owners? This ARENA report identifies the opportunity. Taking advantage of this opportunity, for households and small business owners, will depend on how their needs for driving their cars, align with supporting the grid (social practice), and whether it is seen by consumers as offering value for the use of their assets. Consumers will have their own questions, which we need to explore. For example might they want to know how participating in vehicle to grid will reduce their vehicle/battery life? What vehicle servicing will they need, at what cost? "This report provides a high-level snapshot of the current state of V2X technologies, and associated opportunities and challenges for the Australian market. It has a particular focus on residential and light commercial vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications. Findings in the report are based on interviews with national and international supply chain stakeholders and cash flow modelling for 24 residential customers across the National Electricity Market (NEM). While future consumer uptake of bidirectional charging is uncertain, it is clear that the scope of the economic opportunity for Australia is enormous. Bidirectional EV charging represents one of the largest potential enablers of Australia’s energy transition."

What is the emissions footprint of an EV? The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) published an article today comparing the footprint of EVs compared to petrol cars. However, the ABC used the simplest method for measuring the emissions associated with an EV charging from the grid - the average grid emissions intensity across the year. In one of our older posts, we dug into the methods for measuring the impact of charging your car from the electricity grid. NSW Fair Trading is getting fair dinkum about eMobility-related lithium-ion battery fires. After industry consultation in June/July, most eMobility vehicles and related batteries have been declared High-Risk Battery Articles or Declared Electrical Items. This makes compliance with specified standards mandatory for sale and use in NSW. A range of EN, AU, and UL Standards have been specified for compliance. This is an excellent first step to better quality and safer eMobility devices and batteries. We expect the NSW regulations will quickly become the base regulation for Australia. This affects all eBikes, eScooters, eSkateboards and other forms of eMobility and related batteries. Heavy penalties will apply for breaches. This applies to all rental, shared, or privately owned vehicles and batteries sold in NSW. Although it is illegal to ride many of these devices in public spaces, they are permitted to be sold and must comply. A staged implementation will occur: 🥇 From 1 Feb 2025, all declared articles must comply with required standards, but there will be no requirement to obtain tests, certificates, or markings. 🥈 From 1 August 2025, sellers must obtain tests and certificates, but no marking requirement exists. 🥉 From 1 Feb 2026, all items must be tested, certified and marked. According to the Electric Vehicle Council, new EV purchases in Australia has been doubling each year since 2020 with over 180,000 on the road now. The Driving the Nation Fund expands the national rollout of EV charging and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure and aims to provide 117 charging stations on key highway routes across Australia. The 150MW, two-hour big battery will be built in two stages, with the first 60MW stage expected to reach mechanical completion by Q3 of 2025. A second 88MW stage is expected to be installed by the Q3 of 2026.  .................................................. Spain-based renewables developer X-ELIO will add a nearly 150MW, two-hour big battery to its Blue Grass solar farm in Queensland’s Western Downs, marking its first hybrid solar and storage project in Australia. The 200MW Blue Grass solar farm was completed in late 2022, backed by a power purchase agreement with US software company Salesforce, and has recently ranked among the nation’s top performing utility-scale PV assets. X-Elio says the decision to add a 148MW/296MWh big battery to the solar farm will transform it into a hybrid power source capable of providing essential grid services that will enhance energy reliability and grid stability. A standout in this green revolution occurring on our roads is the plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which has gained widespread popularity, largely driven by the electric car discount. This government incentive has made PHEVs an appealing choice for Australians looking to 'dip their toe' into the EV landscape so to speak. While we’ve seen the inner-city metro areas fully embrace EV ownership, PHEVs has shown to have appeal to a broader market. We examined our database for PHEV customers and cross-referenced against their postcodes to show that PHEVs are now a common sight not only on city streets, but also in the greater city regions, towns and rural communities across the country. #phev #pluginhybrid #novatedlease #ev #electriccars

Australia's electric vehicle (EV) charging network is charging ahead (pun intended), making EV ownership more accessible and road trips greener than ever. Thanks to government initiatives, private companies investment, and the electric car discount, owning an EV is becoming a no-brainer for many Australians. One major component to encourage EV ownership, is having readily available charging stations. Range anxiety is something every new EV driver is familiar with, to help ease this, there have been significant strides towards improving our charging network. Here are the state-by-state highlights for EV charging:

Attention EV and Hybrid Vehicle Owners in New Zealand! If you haven't bought your first Road User Charge (RUC) license yet, you could face fines of around $200, according to NZTA. 📅 This applies to electric and hybrid vehicles under 3500kg, with fines and backdated invoices starting from 1 April 2024. 🔎 To enforce this, NZTA will use odometer readings from your vehicle's warrant of fitness inspections to spot unpaid RUCs. Avoid hefty penalties by ensuring you have your RUC license on display! 💵 **RUC Rates**: - EVs: $76 per 1000 km - PHEVs: $38 per 1000 km (plus fuel excise tax) - Admin Fee: $12.44 (online) or $13.71 (in-person) While traditional hybrids and electrified vehicles over 3500kg are exempt until January 1, 2026, they too will need to comply eventually. Australia finds itself at a crossroads in the adoption of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, grappling with design challenges and inflated revenue expectations, according to industry experts. Despite growing interest in harnessing electric vehicles to support grid stability and enhance energy resilience, Australia still faces significant hurdles in realising the full potential of V2G solutions. One major obstacle lies in the absence of clear market design and regulatory frameworks conducive to V2G integration. Without a coherent strategy, stakeholders struggle to navigate the complex landscape of V2G deployment, hindering progress and stifling innovation. Plus, Australia's limited involvement in the development of international standards, such as the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP), is only exacerbating this challenge.
