A Call for Responsibility and Balance in the International Education Sector In recent months, I have closely observed the measures taken by the governments of Australia and Canada. While many of these changes have had a significant impact on our industry, I firmly believe that some were necessary. The speech surrounding education and democracy that some aggregators or agencies in certain markets have been promoting should not come at the expense of the citizens of these countries. We must acknowledge that the creation of unemployment, inflation, housing shortages, and the excessive strain on infrastructure are issues that the local populations can no longer bear as a result of the rapid growth driven by international education markets. It is imperative that we place greater emphasis on the genuine purpose behind international student programs. Migration should not be the primary focus of our industry. Our core mission should always be the education and personal growth of the individual. If, during their journey, students discover better job opportunities or alternative paths for their professional lives, including possible migration, we must never lose sight of their original goal as students. Supporting the international education market without fully understanding the importance of fostering a conscious, balanced, responsible, and well-structured migration process is something we, as industry stakeholders, must always strive to improve. As professionals with over 24 years of experience in education and migration, it is our responsibility to ensure that these systems remain sustainable—not only for the benefit of international students but for the overall well-being of the host nations. Only through such a balanced approach can we achieve a prosperous, equitable, and sustainable future for everyone involved. Today, I invite all my colleagues and friends in the industry to view these changes as opportunities for improvement. Often, we may not fully see the bigger picture when these shifts occur. Exploring Europe's Rise as a Premier Student Hub As the landscape of international education evolves, Europe is solidifying its position as a premier destination for students worldwide. Traditionally, countries like Australia and Canada have been go-to choices for international students. However, Europe is emerging as a formidable contender, offering a unique blend of academic excellence, cultural richness, and innovative educational policies. The Growing Popularity of Europe According to recent statistics from Eurostat, the European Union saw 1.52 million international students enrolled in tertiary education in 2021. This figure underscores a significant increase in student mobility towards Europe, with Germany, France, and the Netherlands leading the way by hosting 50% of these international students. Luxembourg stands out with the highest percentage of international students at 49.3%, followed by Cyprus at 21.8%, indicating a growing trend of students opting for European institutions over traditional destinations. Why Europe? Quality Education and Diverse Programs: Europe is home to some of the world's oldest and most prestigious universities, offering a wide array of programs taught in English and other languages. Institutions such as the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and ETH Zurich consistently rank among the top globally, providing high-quality education that meets international standards. Affordability and Scholarships : One of the primary advantages of studying in Europe is the affordability. Many European countries offer lower tuition fees compared to Australia and Canada. Moreover, there are numerous scholarships and financial aid options available for international students. The Erasmus+ program, a flagship initiative of the European Union, has been instrumental in promoting student mobility by providing funding for study exchanges, internships, and joint degrees across Europe. The Future of Student Mobility in Europe As global student mobility continues to increase, Europe is well-positioned to attract a growing number of international students. The European Higher Education Area (EHEA), comprising 49 countries, aims to ensure more comparable, compatible, and coherent systems of higher education in Europe. Job losses at IDP Education Pty Ltd are attributed to a reduction in the international student market, leading to a six percent global workforce cut. Restrictive policy environments in key destination countries are cited as the main cause. According to a recent Regulatory and Market Update, IDP forecasts a substantial decline of 20-25 percent in the international education market over the next year.

If agents feel the application / visa process is likely to be more complex, with less chance of success, with many options on offer they will advise students to go elsewhere! We are already seeing this in #ASEAN, where Australia has until recently been a firm favourite, now less so. “Labor’s strict new #internationalstudent caps are already pushing applicants to consider countries other than #Australia, with a new report showing growth in competitor markets including the #US & #Canada amid ongoing policy uncertainty here. The student caps are yet to pass parliament but #research by the country’s largest listed international education provider, IDP Education, found they are already having the desired effect of slowing arrivals. Policy uncertainty, #visa fees & #graduate work rights are also causing would-be enrollees to look elsewhere, or put their overseas #study plans on hold, the report found. Moves to cap #overseasstudent numbers at 270,000 in 2025 have angered Australia’s $51 billion #internationaleducation sector. #Universities are planning major #job cuts & the Reserve Bank of Australia has warned of a hit to consumer spending. Labor is pressing ahead as part of pre-election positioning on slowing overseas immigration. IDP surveyed 6000 prospective & current students from markets around the world. Nearly two-thirds said they would change their destination of choice because of #poststudywork visa access rules, while 58% nominated lower personal savings requirements & 57% said cheaper visa processing fees as major considerations. The report found Canada recorded the highest rate of student decliners – those going elsewhere after originally intending to study in the country - followed by Australia. That strategy aims to see the economic impact of the sector grow to NZ$4.4 billion by 2027 (US$2.6 billion), with an emphasis on growing and diversifying the number of foreign students enrolled in New Zealand. Some additional documentation may include: ✅Qualification certificates, academic, transcripts ✅Proof of employment history ✅Proof that you have enough funds to support yourself ✅Information about your financial guarantor (Identity and relationship) ✅English language proficiency test (such as IELTS) scores ✅You may also have to show evidence that you have sufficient funds to cover your living expenses throughout your stay. You will need to show you have NZ$ 20,000 for a full year of study or NZ$ 1,250 per month ✅Evidence that you are leaving New Zealand after the completion of your course. This can be in the form of flight tickets, however, it is optional ✅A police certificate if you are aged 17 years or over and plan to study for more than 24 months.
