In FY24, many Australian fund managers struggled due to two key misjudgments: underestimating the strength of financial and consumer discretionary stocks, which outperformed expectations. This made it difficult for managers to keep up with the market, with few outperforming the ASX 200 Accumulation Index. A strong month for the Fund despite the S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries Accumulation Index finishing down 0.05% in May. Small Caps underperformed Large Caps, with better sectors including IT, Financials Healthcare and Materials while Consumer Discretionary, Industrials and Energy all lagged. One thing that might lead to a rate cut later this year is the increasing nervousness of the consumer. The recent retail sales figures were poor and the consumer is now retreating into their shell. A couple of months of soft figures and we’ll be talking cuts again. Why you can’t rely on the past to predict what’s next... Yesterday, Director & Portfolio Manager Fil Andronaco, CFA joined the H&B Wealth Symposium in WA to explore the structural changes expected in the Australian stock market over the next decade. His presentation, 'Tectonic Shifts: A Decade of Change Ahead for the ASX,' highlighted: Historical Performance vs. Future Dynamics: While Australian equities have delivered strong historical returns (10.8% per year), shifting economic and market dynamics suggest that future performance may not follow the same path. Challenges for Key Sectors: The dominance of banks and commodity companies, which make up 50% of the Australian stock market, has been a cornerstone of past growth. However, these sectors now face challenges in maintaining their historical growth rates, meaning other sectors will need to shoulder more of the growth burden in the years ahead. Yet, many of these growth sectors already have higher valuations, which may limit their ability to deliver significant upside Scenario Thinking for the Next Decade: By evaluating future scenarios—bear, base, and bull cases—expected returns range from 4.7% to 9.7%, falling short of past trends. Investors will need to adjust their expectations and strategies accordingly, as the reliance on a smaller portion of the market for growth and challenges in current valuations signal significant changes ahead. Macquarie Bank Ltd has successfully launched and priced its anticipated subordinated debt (Tier 2) issuance. The offering comprises two types of 10.5NC5.5 Notes, with a 10.5-year final maturity and an initial call option after 5.5 years. Investors can choose between a floating rate option and a fixed-to-floating rate option, both structured with the expectation of redemption at the 5.5-year call date. The Indications of Interest (IOI) exceeded A$3.95 billion, with A$2.65 billion in initial interest to the floating rate option and A$1.3 billion to the fixed-to-floating rate option. The issue margin, initially set at 200 basis points, was ultimately narrowed to 185 basis points.  Upon the end of bookbuild, Macquarie decided that the fixed-to-floating tranche will carry a coupon of 5.603% per annum with an issue size of A$350 million, while the floating tranche pays 3-month BBSW plus 185 basis points with an issue size of A$900 million. This issuance follows recent developments within Macquarie Group, including indications about a new capital notes offer. Macquarie's 23-24yr half year presentation highlights a well-diversified funding base, with a significant increase in Tier 2 subordinated debt over the past year. As of September 2023, Macquarie's subordinated debt reached A$7.1 billion, up from A$5.7 billion in September 2022, reflecting the bank's strategic focus on strengthening its capital structure and enhancing financial stability. #fixedincome #bonds #investing
