Scammers are increasingly targeting bank customers by impersonating trusted financial institutions, causing significant financial losses. In a recent groundbreaking decision, the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) ruled that HSBC must reimburse a customer scammed through a “spoofed” bank communication – a historic first in Australia. 🚨 Key Takeaways: Scam Impact: Australians reported over 601,000 scams in 2023, with $2.74 billion lost. AFCA Ruling: Banks may now be held accountable if scammed customers were manipulated into disclosing passcodes. Money Mules: Reports reveal that international crime groups use students and short-term visa holders as “money mules” to transfer funds, undermining the banking system. Australia’s laws currently lag behind the UK’s, where banks are required to refund scam victims within five days. The recent ruling opens the door for many Australians who’ve been impacted to revisit previous claims. The CEO of National Australia Bank, Andrew Irvine discusses the challenges facing SMEs in Australia. Yes you guessed it Cybersecurity is up there as an issue that small companies face in Australia. With average cyber crime losses rose from $30,000 in the the financial year 2021 to $46,000 in FY23. Small companies find it difficult to adopt new technology, with 49% of companies needing education. SMEs in Australia are looking for help in streamlining regulatory compliance and easing the cost barriers for adopting up to date cyber technology.
