We are working on an intricate challenge in modern healthcare in #Australia to tackle the portability issue of causal CDSS from one healthcare provider to another healthcare provider by leveraging the meta-heuristic approach and AI. To mitigate this challenge, we have proposed an Adaptive Semantic Framework (ASF) which will do the needful adjustments in the existing CDSS according to a new environment. The abstract of our paper is given below: Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) are a critical part of modern healthcare, assisting healthcare practitioners in making precise decisions. However, most of the existing CDSSs are static, which makes adaptation to a new environment or changes in the same environment challenging. This is where the Adaptive Semantic Framework (ASF) comes in. In a recent paper, a team proposed an ASF for CDSS adaptation to a changing environment. The framework includes various methods such as Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS) and Data-Driven Elements (DDE) to adjust the CDSS to new conditions. This framework addresses two significant challenges of CDSS: its maintenance and the issue of portability across different hospitals with varying data ecosystems. Did you know two core programming languages for developing AI (R and Weka) were developed in New Zealand? With the announcement of “Apple Intelligence”, as well as Google’s shifts into LLM augmented search, we’ve reached a tipping point for integration of generative AI. A timely report by the Artificial Intelligence Researchers Association is probably the best thing I've read on national AI strategy for New Zealand, exploring how to maximise benefits and minimise risks for AI adoption, including driving economic opportunities and productivity in New Zealand. Building off Apple’s announcement and the AIRA report, here are some key trends I’m seeing in both. 🔍 Informed Consumer Choices: Privacy-conscious consumers will seek products that minimise AI integration, or demand greater control and transparency. 🏛️ Governance and Values: Companies will emphasise the governance and ethical features of their products. Apple’s announcement that its Privacy Cloud product includes independent audits of privacy and security exemplify this trend, as does its use of on-device processing and use of licensed training data for its models. ⚖ Regulatory Evolution: Assurance systems for AI products will inevitably fail at times, underscoring the need for nuanced regulatory frameworks in privacy, cybersecurity, consumer protection, and competition law. This will include content moderation issues, as Apple recognises. 📚 AI Literacy: We need to foster proactive AI literacy, otherwise people will learn lessons about how these technologies work the hard way, like through scams, deception, or privacy breaches. Clearly we need to develop the research community, along with industry, but (as the AIRA report notes) we’re also going to need to build a talent pipeline for AI governance, audit and regulation too. I’m contacted frequently by young people looking for opportunities in this space, and I’m looking into what the Brainbox Institute can do to support this important area.

Thank you to ACS (Australian Computer Society) for supporting NAIDOC Week- a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. "It is also a time for reflection and for the tech sector to consider how it improves the representation of First Nations Australians." As part of NAIDOC Week, we shared Key insights from our webinar on "Generative AI and Indigenous Data: The Australian Perspective" hosted by #ACS, which brought to light several critical points regarding the intersection of emerging technologies and Indigenous data sovereignty. The webinar underscored the necessity of integrating Indigenous perspectives and knowledge systems into the development and deployment of AI technologies to ensure cultural sensitivity and ethical use.   "Importance of Indigenous Data Sovereignty" A recurring theme was the need to safeguard Indigenous data from exploitation. Professor Natalie Stoianoff, Director, IP Program, UTS Indigenous Knowledge Forum underscored the legal frameworks required to protect Indigenous cultural heritage, while Tui Raven, Author of the Guidelines for First Nations Collection Description, and co-investigator and cultural advisor for the First Inventors documentary highlighted the spiritual and cultural imperatives of data protection. There was a strong emphasis on the risks associated with data mining, which could potentially expose sensitive cultural information without proper consent and control.   "UNESCO's Role and Multilingualism" Jaco Du Toit, Chief of Section Universal Access to Information, from #UNESCO presented several global instruments and policies that can guide the engagement with Indigenous communities. Notably, he mentioned the 2003 Recommendation on the Promotion and Use of Multilingualism and Universal Access to Cyberspace. This recommendation is pivotal in fostering the creation and preservation of Indigenous knowledge, particularly in native languages, thereby ensuring that these communities are not mere consumers but active participants in the digital space.   Conclusion  The speakers urged for continued dialogue and collaboration among Indigenous communities, policymakers, and technologists to develop ethical AI frameworks that respect and protect Indigenous data. AI Video Assessments Some great insights from Professor Danny Lui from Sydney Uni as he talks about multi-modal assessments. It's worth a watch to see some great capabilities. AI used in this video includes: * Luma * Udio * HeyGen * Chat GPT 4.0 * Elevenlabs Students in other sectors (e.g., vocational training and small business) may struggle with digital skills when using these AI tools. There were quite a few steps involved. There are quite a few Gen AI video tools out there, and Google Vids launching next year will be a one-stop shop to do all the things these 5 Gen AI tools are currently doing. Google Vids is not yet widely available on paid Workplace subscriptions, but it is available to some Edu accounts. Quantum Computing: Future Potential, AI: Here & Now. There’s been a lot of buzz around Quantum Compute of late. Especially with the Australian Govt recent somewhat controversial announcement of almost A$1bn in funding for the US-based quantum-startup PsiQuantum. The investment makes PsiQuantum the world's most funded independent quantum company. Whilst much of the technical qubit discussion is admittedly above my pay scale, there's a pressing reality we perhaps can't ignore: quantum computing, according to many experts, is still years away and with uncertain outcomes. Meanwhile, AI is here now, delivering real results that we shouldn’t fall behind on. A recent study by researchers from Microsoft and the Scalable Parallel Computing Lab at ETH Zurich (SPCL@ETH) provided a harsh reality check for those hyping the potential of quantum computers. They found that off-the-shelf GPUs outperform these machines in practical applications. Their paper demonstrated that, short of exceptional improvements in hardware & software, even future quantum systems are unlikely to achieve practical speeds in workloads like drug discovery, material sciences & weather forecasting. To highlight this, they pitted a hypothetical quantum system with 10,000 error-correcting qubits against a classical computer equipped with a single NVIDIA A100 GPU, and the GPU came out well ahead. Sovereign Large Language Model (LLM) AI capabilities are paramount for maintaining Australia’s competitiveness & technological autonomy. Whilst A$1BN is being spent on PsiQuantum, experts emphasise that Australia could establish a sovereign AI capability for around $100 million in compute costs. In a recent Senate inquiry into AI adoption, Professor Nicholas Davis from the University of Technology Sydney explained that Australia has three key options, being: - Accept US market-leading LLM’s with their transparency & data set limitations. - Use open-source models and accept a big performance gap. - Develop a sovereign LLM using Australian data & experts. Greens Senator David Shoebridge highlighted that a $100m investment is a surprisingly low price for such critical sovereign capacity, yet the Government's AI funding commitment in the last Budget was ~$40m, primarily for regulatory efforts over 5 years. Simon Bush, CEO of the AIIA, noted this as insufficient, comparing it to the UK’s £2bn, Singapore’s US$5bn, & Canada’s US$2.4bn investments. Bush warned that without significantly more funding and urgency, Australia risks falling well behind its global competitors. It's clear: Quantum Computing is on the horizon, but AI is here, demanding immediate attention & investment. From Robots to Warbots: AI's Role in Strategic Decision Making The Defence Sector is a critical domain where AI is increasingly being adopted today. Examining it's impact in this context offers many insights into AI's future -- particularly for decision making in situations of high uncertainty and ambiguity. From autonomous systems capable of precision operations to predictive analytics that anticipate supply chains delays and detect infrastructure weaknesses, AI is redefining how we approach strategic planning and operational efficiency. What are we learning about the use of AI for decision making in defence that can be applied across other sectors? I've been looking at 2 recent books on the topic of AI in defence from Kenneth Payne and Christian Brose to understand more. Here's what I took away about what leaders in all domains can do to improve the use of AI in strategic decision making: ✅ Embrace AI as a Complement, Not a Replacement ✅ Prioritize Ethical Frameworks ✅ Invest in AI Literacy ✅ Foster Agility and Adaptability ✅ Enhance Cybersecurity Measures ✅ Balance Speed with Thoughtfulness ✅ Collaborate and Share Knowledge The ethical implications of AI in decision-making processes are profound and far-reaching. As discussed in detail in these recent books by Kenneth Payne and Christian Brose, we have a responsibility to ensure that as we push the boundaries of what's possible with AI, and to do so in a way that aligns with our values and serves the greater good – especially in contexts that raise significant questions, doubts, and uncertainties.
