Rapid innovation offers the promise of a new era of prosperity, but instead risks exacerbating trust issues, leading to further societal instability and political polarisation. 🌏 In a year where half the global population can vote in new leaders, the acceptance of innovation is essential to the success of our society. While people agree that scientists are essential to the acceptance of innovation, many are concerned that politics has too much influence on science. This perception is contributing to the decline of trust in the institutions responsible for steering us through change and towards a more prosperous future. As a Strategy & Policy Designer it is great to see the keynote from Catherine Livingstone on the value of design thinking for strategy and for boards to approach in this new way at the AICD Governance Summit 2024. “Design thinking is hard, but pays enormous dividends and with the increasing velocity of change, as a capability, will be a critical success factor. It drives simplicity from complexity, providing a rigour, which enables more resilient strategic thinking.” Highlighting examples from Tesla to Apple, and her own executive career at Cochlear, she stressed the transformative power of design thinking in strategic disruption, challenging the notion that its application is limited to product or fashion design. What an inspiring day it was to be part of the inaugural Impact WA Economy Forum! The largest gathering of cross-sector leaders, all driven to advance impact investment, equitable innovation, and well-being economics. The incredible work being done by social enterprises in sustainability now, more than ever, needs sustained support. It’s crucial that the momentum from these events doesn't fade into the "we've always done it this way" mindset when it comes to social procurement and impact investment. The opportunity is real, and the time is now to act and accelerate the change we so desperately need. One key takeaway for me was the idea of rethinking value—centering responsibility, respect, and reciprocity. Shifting our focus from mere output and activity to being, and fostering connection to people and place. A huge thank you to Sven, Kylie, Danae, and the rest of the Impact Seed team for not only bringing this event together but for the selfless, ongoing support you continually provide. I’m all for things ending naturally. Insatiable growth is problematic. 25 years is incredible. -but this feels premature… Creatives being pushed to the boundaries. Unable to afford city rents, absence of live venues - now being passionately rectified by Michael Rodrigues but the long tail of loss to creative industry and livelihood continues. Small purposeful enterprises need to be nurtured. Relational rather than transactional architecture should be elevated. The most important business model is the one that has immeasurable ripple effects to culture, economy, environment and of course society. Not easy to monetise but infinitely rich in its contribution to resilience and adaptive capacity. The fact it took a creative in industry to see the important link between label and artist (hermi’s) to trigger a global launchpad is a case in point. My amazing brother, Tim Levinson aka Urthboy and the other beautiful humans behind Elefant Traks deserve recognition for confirming that independant music can be ✅ viable, ✅ maintain integrity and ✅ bring opportunity to underrepresented members of industry. BUT it doesn’t stop there. The pipeline of renewal / construction projects across Australia have great potential to nurture maker industries and creative districts for future generational enjoyment. Interim use strategies and vibrancy pilots are your best friend and for business like Elefant Traks, their greatest ally. To the next 25 years for the future indie label, the many artists and their Fams and communities that benefit from it.

Wonderful to see a local government leading on the need for a new PDA to help unlock huge potential for new housing supply as it seeks to deal with population growth and other challenges. We met with Cairns Mayor, Amy Eden, and the Director of Planning, Ed Johnson, this week to discuss the council's push for a Priority Development Area (PDA) in the Mt Peter Southern Growth Corridor. We were discussing the opportunities presented by the new Economic Development Queensland remit that recently passed through the Queensland Parliament, including the role of community housing providers (CHPs). We expressed our sector’s keen interest, which is also one of our key state election asks, to identify more PDA’s across Queensland to assist manage growth. We know conservatively there is an under supply of about 5,300 social homes in Cairns and by mid 2030, that under supply will jump to 11,500, subject to housing commencements. Cairns is also in the top 10 cities in the country for unmet housing need. By working closely with the Cairns Regional Council, and our local housing networks, we are confident that every lever is being pulled and explored locally, so it is time to lean into these options to unlock even more potential in the north. 📢 GRANT ALERT | Social Enterprise Development Initiative (SEDI) grants now available Do you know a social enterprise looking to grow their impact? Social Enterprise Development Initiative (SEDI) capability building grants, valued at up to $120,000 each, are available to eligible social enterprises, including Indigenous owned or controlled organisations with a defined social benefit, working to support Australians experiencing entrenched disadvantage. Grant funds are to be used to purchase business and impact capability building services provided by intermediaries, such as financial services, evaluation and impact measurement, business consulting and legal advice. The SEDI Grants program will run through to June 2026. There will be rolling grant rounds, ensuring ample time for submissions by eligible social enterprises. Grants will be awarded based on the merit of the enterprises/projects, not on the order of application.   SEDI Grants are administered by Impact Investing Australia and funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services. Some information was released overnight about the LNP Housing Plan, ahead of today's State Budget reply speech. While there are still many details to come, it's encouraging to see some of the proposed measures in scope, including shared equity programs and major infrastructure partnerships with local government to increase housing supply. New and innovative concepts for maximising church-owned land and utiliising vacant bedrooms make for interesting reading. And if the reports are accurate, there is a strong commitment to achieving housing targets leading up to 2046.
