ECOSSAUS, aiming to lead Australia into the New Hydrogen Economy with mega-scale salt cavern storage for hydrogen in the multi-thousand tonne class of facilities held an informative webinar this morning hosted by Birchal, Australia's largest CSF group. The CSIRO has forecast a need for c.5,000,000 tonnes of hydrogen storage if Australia is to successfully transition to the New Hydrogen Economy and that represents in the order of 800 plus 5-7,000 tonne capacity salt caverns if it were all stored in salt caverns. Already the CSIRO has stated that underground salt storage caverns for hydrogen storage (which have been used since the early 1970s in Europe and North America) are the most cost effective and efficient storage method for the mega-scale volumes required. Government shortlists frigate builders – but will they build locally? The federal government has down-selected two shipbuilders, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, to progress designs for Australia’s future general purpose frigates under the SEA 3000 programme. In May, Defence released an approach to market to five shipbuilders, with Defence now planning to work with the two industry partners to further develop the proposals for the Mogami (pictured) and MEKO A-200 frigates. Up to eleven general purpose frigates will replace the Anzac Class frigates and will be equipped for undersea warfare and local air defence in order to secure maritime trade routes and Australia’s northern approaches. An important step forward in Australia's energy transistion has been made today with the release of the Federal Government's Future Gas Strategy. It sets the scene for the enduring role natural gas and renewable gas will play to 2050 and beyond. Now to put it into action!

Nuclear more than 6 times the cost of renewables – report An independent report by consulting and engineering firm Egis and commissioned by the Clean Energy Council has confirmed that nuclear is the most expensive form of new energy in Australia. The review analysed the CSIRO and Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO)’s GenCost report against the Lazard Review and the Mineral Council of Australia (MCA)’s research into Small Modular Nuclear Reactors. The report found that nuclear energy is up to six times more expensive than renewable energy and even on the most favourable reading for nuclear, and that renewables remained the cheapest form of new-build electricity. Led by its Clean Energy Transition Committee, the Australia Japan Business Co-operation Committee (AJBCC)'s recent conference in Adelaide was an outstanding success. The conference examined the key themes relevant to "Transitioning the Australia-Japan Energy Partnership Towards a Carbon-Neutral 2050". The Conference underscored and re-affirmed the mutually strong, beneficial and enduring partnership between Australia and Japan in the energy space. The shared goals, commitment and focus of both countries has laid the foundations for one of the most successful energy partnerships in the world. The Conference explored how these foundations are again creating the footing and basis to advance and turbo charge opportunities in support of Australia and Japan's energy transition towards a net zero future. Key observations from the Conference are set out in the document shared with this post. It is a genuinely exciting time in the energy sector and the energy transition sector - a time for renewed and even stronger collaboration between Australia and Japan. There are of course challenges with every opportunity but the opportunities are significant. As concluded by the Conference, successfully pursuing and realising these opportunities will be immeasurably enhanced by re-invigorating the Australia Japan Energy Partnership through effective and meaningful engagement and collaboration between and across all key stakeholders - business, financiers, governments (and their relevant agencies) and policy makers. The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is seeking feedback on a discussion paper about how #smart #data options could benefit #consumers. The #consultation #paper focuses on #real-time #data on consumers’ #energy #usage as households continue to take up energy resources (#CER) like #solar, #batteries and #electric #vehicles and use energy flexibly. It follows a rule change request from Energy Consumers Australia and comes after the AEMC made recommendations in 2023 to support an accelerated deployment of #smart #meters across the National Electricity Market. AEMC Chair, Anna Collyer, said millions of Australians are embracing the shift to a cleaner energy system and the cost savings that CER technologies and flexible energy use, such as with timer-set devices, can unlock for consumers. “Smart meters are the #digital #foundation for a modern, connected and #efficient #energy #system because they turn power into knowledge and benefit everyone from system #operators and #networks to households and businesses.”

With the increasing cost of living, and rising energy bills (and other increases as well), it was great to visit Jemena facility to see the work they're doing to test the effectiveness of hydrogen in generating green energy, which they said would help achieve emissions reduction targets in NSW.  As I door knocked my electorate of Fowler in South West Sydney, I know that cost of living is front and centre of people's minds. So far, we have not seen any reduction on our energy bills despite wholesale electricity prices dropping. Here we are reaching the end of the first term, the major parties are still debating about the energy mix in 2037, while the people in the lower socio-economic areas like mine, are struggling to pay their bills and put food on their tables. #auspol #energypolicy #greenenergy #DaiLeMPFowler #costofliving #energybills
