A strong month for the Fund despite the S&P/ASX Small Ordinaries Accumulation Index finishing down 0.05% in May. Small Caps underperformed Large Caps, with better sectors including IT, Financials Healthcare and Materials while Consumer Discretionary, Industrials and Energy all lagged. One thing that might lead to a rate cut later this year is the increasing nervousness of the consumer. The recent retail sales figures were poor and the consumer is now retreating into their shell. A couple of months of soft figures and we’ll be talking cuts again. The Flinders portfolio remains underweight consumer facing industries (such as retail) and remains overweight the industrial sector where we can see continued investment and growth. https://lnkd.in/g-6__x25

Andrew Gregory, head of advice for the $135 billion profit-for-member fund UniSuper, is confident qualified advisers will complement the advice landscape and is “excited” about how they will sit in the fund’s business model. However, he is clear there needs to be well-defined guardrails over what advice is given and an effective way to triage into holistic advisers when the need arises. #financialservices #financialadvisers #financialplanning

The Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA) welcomes the launch of the first consultation on Australia’s sustainable finance taxonomy. The consultation is seeking feedback on: • the draft headline ambitions for the Australian taxonomy’s environmental objectives; and • the proposed activities and draft substantive climate change mitigation criteria for the first three sectors to be developed under the taxonomy: 1. Electricity generation and storage. 2. Minerals, mining and metals. 3. The built environment. The process is being overseen by the Australian Sustainable Finance Institute (ASFI). Submissions are due by Sunday 30 June. RIAA Co-CEO Estelle Parker called on interested parties to make a submission and reflected on this milestone in Australia’s sustainable finance policy. “The industry has been working towards this for years, and a lot of work has gone into this draft. RIAA’s CEO co-chaired the Australian Sustainable Finance Roadmap, of which the taxonomy was a key recommendation,” said Estelle. “RIAA is proud to have established ASFI in 2021, which has brought together many great minds of sustainable finance to drive development of the taxonomy.” RIAA will be holding a member event on 6 June to delve deeper into the taxonomy and explore how RIAA members can contribute most effectively. The most effective way for Advisers to retain assets under advice intergenerationally is for Advisers to recommend clients gift via a flexible reversionary interest trust, with an integrated loan facility, so money can be loaned or appointed to Beneficiaries pre or post-demise of the Settlor.   Drawing on our own experience, c. 50% of WAY Inheritor Trusts remain in existence (and invested) post-demise of the Settlor. People are living longer, so the next generation are inheriting at ages when they’ve often already built a sizeable estate themselves, so they often don’t ‘need’ the money, hence it remains invested. If they ever need it (such as if they get divorced or require care in later life), the Trustees can loan money to them, otherwise it often remains invested until the next generation start to buy houses and require some financial assistance to do so. Our first thought is for Trustees to consider loaning money to Beneficiaries, so the loan becomes a debt of the recipient not an asset, thus in the event they were to divorce, be declared bankrupt, require care or have their own IHT liabilities, the loan reduces the value of their assets and protects their ‘family wealth’. With a potential perpetuity period of 125 years, a flexible reversionary trust, with an integrated loan facility can protect family wealth for multiple generations, whilst also helping Advisers to retain assets under advice intergenerationally too by advising multiple generations of the same family.' The reflections of The Conexus Institute Retirement Conference from David Bell and Geoff Warren are a good summary of the state of play in Australia's superannuation industry regarding retirement. https://lnkd.in/dhr-tzef While some progress is being made, they echo the regulators' findings that there is still plenty to be done and encourage the superannuation industry to be more aspirational around retirement.
