One of the biggest hurdles with design, development, and the rest of business is language. "Attracting more eyes" for business leaders might translate to "understanding user needs" for developers. This doesn't mean either side is wrong, it simply means there's a language barrier. Leaders on both sides should have a better understanding of how to speak the other's language. What an incredible experience moderating my first panel! Did I feel nervous? Absolutely. But more importantly, it built my confidence to moderate the next one. Confidence doesn’t come before—it’s built through action, after you’ve done it. At Design Leadership MY’s FUSECON24 recent satelite event on “What Makes a Great Product Culture and Product Org”, I had the privilege of hosting a fantastic group of panelists, each sharing their unique perspectives on what makes SEEK a truly product-led organization. The insights were inspiring, and the energy in the room was electric! This post came in abit late. Tom as always thank you for such wise and brilliant words! Design managers’ main responsibility is indeed to provide context, to support, coach and mentor others. We are not supposed to be the smartest or the most technical people in the room, we should set the scene, introduce the problem we are trying to solve and enable conversations to happen towards defining solutions that will impact positively our users experience and ultimately our business. We can still be hands-on, and should be if needed, but we should let our teams shine. We should make sure our teams’ work is highly visible and most important, that our teams are successful. Their success is our success, our work gets seen through them. Design managers out there, lets keep reminding ourselves that our best work will happen through others. So provide context, build relationships, coach and tell stories that make people want to act.

There’s a lot of talk about how designers need to communicate differently—especially with non-design peers. If you’re hitting roadblocks, it could be because you’re not explaining the rationale and best practices behind your choices, which builds authority and trust. Clear, strategic communication can make all the difference in aligning teams and getting buy-in. #DesignLeadership #EffectiveCommunication #Collaboration

🤔 🧠The (one of) hard part about contracting design is doing good work when you are the second (or third) designer hired to touch/design a product/software already underway. 🗺️ Coming in and picking up where design teams left off years ago, and learning on your own is no easy task. 💫 It’s not impossible, but if you let 🤯😖 imposter syndrome get you, it will feel like you are in over your head, especially if you don’t have total agency/time for learning. 👩🏾‍🏫 My advice- or 💪🏾practice, has been to: - 🧘🏾‍♀️ breath, - 🚫🧠remind yourself that you are not performing brain surgery, so your mistakes are not fatal - 🧐 ask questions - ✍🏾 spend time reading and summarizing information in digestible chunks - 👩🏾‍💻deciding process and time needed once you have come to an understanding. 💁🏾‍♀️ This takes time, but when you focus, get out of your head, it will eventually become clearer.
