Why then does there seem to be an air of anxiety about super funds appointing nominee directors? Jeremy Cooper asks. Super funds have been investing in and governing significant unlisted and private equity assets for two decades in many cases. It would be hard to imagine that such funds wouldn’t be able to identify people with suitable skills and experience to take on similar roles in the ASX listed space. Diversity of thinking and style around the board table is a virtue in an increasingly uncertain and complex world. Why would it matter if there were a director with a decarbonisation agenda, for example, on the board? What would be the problem if there were a highly qualified company director urging a major fossil fuel company to diversify towards renewable alternatives to align with genuine Paris targets?

AltX co-CEO Nick Raphaely, sat down to discuss recent market activity with InvestorDaily. Specifically, the risk of investing in a private business with some level of gearing. This comes after the announcement of Australian Super's $1.1 billion dollar hit, in a private equity deal. Speaking to InvestorDaily Raphaely said, “If revenues of the underlying company fall and borrowing costs rise, this will naturally cause some stress in the business, as seems to have been the case here,” he said. Raphaely emphasised that private equity remains a well-established asset class, typically requiring large ticket sizes to participate in deals. The latest quarterly Cut Through Venture Australian VC Funding Report has been released 💸 While total funding dropped significantly in Q3, 2024 is on track to finish as the third-largest funding year on record. Key insights: 📉 Total funding declined in this quarter to $695M raised but the total number of deals increased, predominantly due to accelerator round announcements. 🏥 Healthtech had the fifth most funds raised ($59M) and third most deals. 👎 Biotech/MedTech dropped out of the top five for most funds raised, after ranking 3rd in Q2 and 2nd in Q1. 🙌 Healthtech is the third highest sector investors are most excited about, up from 13th place in Q3 2023. ↘️ Biotech/MedTech, however, took a tumble from 10th place in Q2 to 16th this quarter. 🚺 Funding to startups with female founders has increased but predominantly in Angel/Pre-Seed.
