The HYENA Man “Migrants don’t come here to take, they come here to contribute” – Aden Fareh Even after this year's events, Australian summers never fail to remind us that to live in this country is to be very fortunate. The long, warm days, the beaches, the barbecues, the family, the friends, the sports, the arts, and the space are enough to remind us why we love it so much and why, we, or our ancestors, chose to come here. We take the good things for granted. But sometimes, we meet a person like Aden, and remember we are profoundly lucky to live in Australia - strong, free, democratic, prosperous and unpretentious. Immigration always teaches us things about ourselves. Aden’s story teaches us about ambition, adaptability and positivity. Ben Donnelly met Aden at 7:30am in Cathedral Square Park, Brisbane City. Aden introduced himself with his trademark smile, and told his remarkable story. Aden grew up as a nomad in Somalia. After suffering a hyena attack, Aden’s wound became infected, and he was sent to the UAE (Abu Dhabi) for further treatment. He subsequently moved to Foxton, New Zealand, with his brothers. In the evenings, they would learn English by watching movies. During school in New Zealand, his brothers supported him by working in a chicken abattoir. Initially very popular, they knew how quickly opinions could turn when they did not live up to their classmates’ stereotypes. Aden moved to another town, Palmerston North, where he met a teacher, Mrs. Mathews, who brought out Aden’s hidden potential. He topped his school, won a scholarship to study Process Engineering at Massey University and was invited back to do his PhD, graduating with a Master's in Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering (Distinction). During his early career, he was nominated for New Zealand Young Innovator of the Year for applying concepts from his master’s degree. Aden assisted a major multinational food and drink conglomerate in restarting exporting after an extended delay. He is currently working on Australia’s vital defence and civilian supply chain infrastructure as a Project Manager. There are many suggested reasons for the strength of Australia’s immigrant society. All of which have their merit, combined, are enough not to be complacent about them. But, undoubtedly, a strength of Australia’s immigrant society is the strength of the immigrants who have come here. Aden Fareh is an example of an excellent Australian—engineering solutions to our most complicated problems, with an unimpeachable smile. https://lnkd.in/gEP9ZUg4

Concerning reversal in the recruitment difficulty rate for Queensland. The recruitment outlook survey by Jobs and Skills Australia shows QLD is the only state that employers are finding it increasingly harder to fill vacant roles. Whilst the rest of employers in Australia are benefiting from an ease in recruitment conditions, QLD is going in the opposite direction. Last quarter a 10% increase in the rate made QLD the most difficult state to recruit in, with around 65% of employers encountering significant problems. How will this play out into the new year, and which regions in QLD will be most affected? #yakr #recruitment #queenslandjobs

The great ‘High Rise’ Harry Triguboff, the man behind the many Meriton towers we see all across our major cities today. He had his take on the immigration issue. Simply put, “We can’t find the reasons not to fix it (Visa system).” For a bloke who’s seen a fair few winters, Harry’s definitely still got it. Great yarn as always Mark Bouris AM. #jobs #migration #skillsshortage #meriton
