  • Veterinary clinics are being urged to have effective biosecurity measures in place, adequate personal protective equipment and watch for signs of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in birds and poultry. A wide range of bird species can be infected with avian influenza, although waterfowl, seabirds and shorebirds are considered to be most at risk. Sample collection and laboratory testing needs to be undertaken with PPE and biosecurity precautions due to zoonotic transmission risks. • On 7 November 2024, a sole trader with 22 years of roofing experience was fined $8000 by the Maroochydore Magistrates Court for illegally using a high-pressure water spray to clean asbestos-containing roof sheets at a Buderim property. Despite being warned about asbestos in the roof, the contractor proceeded without appropriate controls, resulting in asbestos debris scattered around the property. The contractor ignored messages from the tenants and failed to comply with remediation notices from Workplace Health and Safety Queensland. Ultimately, the homeowner had to hire an asbestos removal company to clean up at her own expense. In sentencing, the magistrate emphasised the contractor's disregard for safety and the risk of asbestos exposure. Although the contractor expressed remorse, the court found his apology did not fully acknowledge the potential impact of his actions. Due to his guilty plea and lack of prior convictions, a conviction was not recorded. 👉 Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/eyqvUFfu

  • Hot cutting drums- beware the dangers! Don’t get burned. Do not cut into any drum that: • has the flame hazard diamond symbol marked on it • has previously contained flammable or combustible liquids (including oils) • has unknown contents • has caps/bungs still fitted. Ensure you know the drum’s history – don’t take a chance. Before conducting any hot work, always provide proper training and supervision to your team, so your workers understand the hazards and risks associated with the task and how to avoid a fire or explosion. #dontgetburned #safehotcutting #weldsafely Learn more: https://bit.ly/4hVCZdG

  • 🌞 Heat hangover 🌞 We all know that too many drinks can lead to a miserable hangover with symptoms like headache, nausea, irritability, and fatigue. But did you know that prolonged exposure to heat can make you feel just as awful? Thermal physiologist Dr. Matt Brearley introduced the term "heat hangover" to describe the similar uncomfortable symptoms that occur when we overexert ourselves in the heat—without even touching a drop of alcohol. Heat hangovers can compromise the safety of staff and lead to lower productivity. Stay safe and hydrated this summer! ☀️💧 Remember to take breaks, seek shade, and listen to your body. Find out more about heat stress and other information on working safely in hot and humid environments here: https://lnkd.in/gbcvyUq The heat stress calculator helps assess these risks and provides an easy way to identify any issues that need to be addressed. • While Queensland doesn’t currently have any high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 cases, it is likely to occur soon, during bird migration season. Whether you work directly with birds or in environments where birds are around, be vigilant with hygiene practices. Ensure you and your workers: 💧 Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating, drinking, or smoking, and after handling birds, droppings, or any contaminated equipment. 🤝 Use a hand sanitiser that is at least 60% alcohol when necessary and wash hands with soap and water as soon as possible. ⛑️ Cover any cuts or abrasions with clean, dry bandages. 🍎 Eat, drink, or smoke in areas where birds or their droppings are not present. 👢 Wear clean clothes and footwear when working around birds, and avoid direct contact—yes, that includes kissing the birds! Remain aware of avian influenza and if you see five or more sick or dead birds together in or around your workplace report it to Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23 or the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
