In a series of focus groups, we asked men and boys about the influences they believe shape society's attitudes and behaviors toward women. We found that younger participants heavily referenced social media and influencers, while parents did not feel in control of what influences their children were exposed to online. Participants also cited family, background, friends and media as other societal influences. #welisten

"[On sexist wife jokes] I don't really feel like, one they're funny, and if you don't like you're wife why are you with her?" Not only do sexist jokes help drive violence against women, but they're also just not funny. The 2021 National Community Attitudes Survey (NCAS) found that only 15% of respondents thought it was okay to make sexist jokes about women when they were among male friends. Men - if you hear a sexist joke and want to call it out, remember that 85% of people agree with you. #notfunny #respectwomen #welisten

Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. The messaging for this year’s 16 Days of Activism is so important – #NoExcuse. UNiTE to end violence against women. We couldn’t agree more with this message. Violence won’t end unless we all come together and end it. We need all members of the community - especially men and boys, to actively work towards ending violence against women. We asked male students about their role in ending violence against women. This is some of what they told us. We want to say a huge thank you for the men and boys who put themselves out there for these videos. Time and time again in our focus groups we heard men and boys of all ages, classes and cultures say that they have never spoken about violence against women. It takes an incredible amount of bravery to have those conversations on a public platform and we can’t thank these volunteers enough for it. In our recent focus groups, we asked men and boys about the barriers that might stop them from speaking up if they saw a woman experiencing violence, abuse or harassment. What they told us was that the biggest reasons for not intervening were fear, not thinking it’s their business and not knowing what they could do to help. When men and boys intervene, it sends the message that violence won’t be tolerated. We educate men and boys how to intervene.
